My girlfriend is currently reading TFOR and she keeps telling me MC is in love with Kelly. Personnally, I don't think so because MC has been brainwashed by the UNSC. I would like to know what you fanboy have to say about that!

I think he thinks of her more as a sister. But there were some sparks there....just a few and doused with water.

I think he thinks of her as a good soldier and a "friend" but not in love, the MC cant love, or at least not in the terms we think of. His first priority is for the mission and Earth, all other objectives are secondary, including Kelly.

No matter how 'brainwashed' MC is, the innate human drives can't just be ignored. Call it Freudian, but I think such yearnings can't be removed by any amount of military training.

John is less brainwashed, and more like they removed his sex drive(Don't ban me please, I'm donating to 343 Guilt'o Lantern :D) But he surely feels sisterly love for her as he feels for all marines. He was obviously very saddened when there were just "dust and echoes".

He does love her but he isn't in love with her. When Sam died she was the closest to him.
I noticed something in The Flood and First Strike, John seems to have had his training "undone" as in The Fall of Reach he is by the book and reall sir yes sir stuff but by the end of First Strike he backchats Cortana and fights with more anger than he ever had before so maybe something will happen between them.

i honestly dont thinkt hats going to be an issue. he was just snappy with cortana in first strike casue he hadn't slept for a week and he had been fighting the flood. alos i see to doubt if dr halsey and the other spartans will b in halo 2 casue not everyone has read the novels so it wont mean much to them. i think william c dietz will write the halo 2 novel and if its possible dependin on the outcome of halo 2 eric nyland will write the next book and carry on where he left off. dont flame casue i know it makes sense to have fred, will and linda and kelly and the doc in the game for us

I am the girlfriend in question ! And I am sure that Master Chief loves Kelly ! Or at least Kelly does ... I asked my halo brainwashed macho man to post on this Halo forum, but he seems to disagree with what I think ... So I want to express my opinion myself !

First ! MC and Kelly have always been together since childhood. There is no better way to start a strong relationship, especially if the 2 of them are facing hard situations, such as a Spartan training ^^;
Next ! MC clearly says in the book that Kelly scares him ... Hey ! DA man is scared by a little woman ! Ouuh ! Love is in the air !
Please ! tell me that some of you saw it ! Or is love only evident for fangirls ?

the way i see it is that kelly fancies the MC but he fancies Linda as you will understand what i mean when you read First Strike....

The augmentation did affect him in several ways. I remember something about suppression of sex drive among other things when Dr. Halsey was reading the side effects of the augmentations. I don't think the spartans are much like ordinary human beings, either mentally or physically.

A suppresed sex drive is a risk, not a side affect, of a Catalytic thyroid implant. On page57 of TFoR its listed as a risk, not a side affect. I dont think he loves Kelly though becasue he thinks of her as family, not lover. So any love he has is plutonic. Either that or he doesn't love her at all as to not let it get in the way of the mission.

No. The spartan's -blam!- drive was brought down while in surgery. That was one of the side affects. Spartan's cannot be -blam!-ly driven very well and if they do than they hide it. Kinda like 1st graders. They think somone else is cute but say o no they have cooties.

Hey guys... Love isn't always connected with sex you know ! I don't care if Master Chief is an impotent man (Oh John I beg your pardon !), that won't stop his feelings toward another person ! Maybe I live in a world of pink bunnies, but I think that MC can love, it's just that he doesn't know how. That's why a relationship between him and Kelly would be sooooo cuteeee >< !

yeah, maybe if there wasnt the whole saving the world thing he would... and he cares for all his fellow spartans... whether soemthing between them happened would probably depend on how kelly feels about MC...

I personally don't think that MC will fall in love. Not with the way Bungie does things. He does however seem to show more emotion towards the two main female Spartans, Linda and Kelly.

When Kelly went "missing".. he paused at her named, sighed, and marked her as MIA as well as the other Spartans.

He always talks about how he admires Linda and constantly is found staring at her, seeing how she does it.

MC definately shows more emotion than your standard Spartan, but I don't think he will fall in love.

Well, in the book, it says that the MC's augmentations severely reduced his sex drive.

Argh ! Suppression of -blam!- drive is a risk ! Not a side effect ! And Master Chief only had temporary side effects such as eyes bleeding.
And call me a freak, but a Spartan that couldn't love would be less useful to the rest of the squad. The first Spartans taken from the age of 6 in Antiquity were all like a family, yes, but they even turned -blam!- ! That's why they were so fierce in combat, to protect the one they loved. Project Spartan II comprises woman so things are easier for pairing ... Spartans I and Spartans II are so similar ... why not in the deepest ways ?
