Subject: Imposed lurking?

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

Should Bungie have a sort of grauated join system? One that would require potential members to lurk for a week before they can post? It would help cut down on mis-forumed topics, and would give the new members some experience in the forums before they run off to make a repeat thread.

It would have to make something pop up that would tell them why they can't post, or automatically send them a PM for the same purpose.

BTW, I have no idea what sort of programming it would take to make this work, so if it would take a lot of effort then sorry for wasting youre time.

I remember Achronos was saying something about a "ranking"(can't remember the correct term he used) possibly being put into affect. New users were limited to the amount of posts they could make daily for a set trial period. I heard anything about it since then.

He also said something about special member privs for dedicated posters. Nonspammers/Helpful type people. They might get a special title, too, like the Moderators have.

No clue if any of this is still being considered.

I think I remember that, and I haven't heard anything about it sense either.
What I was/am really worried about is the new members though. The old members don't need rewards to keep them in line, but the newer ones do need something.

Yeah. I went off topic a little.

I think, with the new people joining for stats, a regulator of some sort is in need.

You'r right, many of them will be joining for stats. They could add that to the list of immediate priviliges.

That would be cool.
The lurking idea will be good for all those new members that join when halo 2 comes out.

I think forcing them to lurk would be oppressive... You should lurk anyway y'know? and dumbasses wouldnt really do it, they would just wait for the time restriction to be up. One thing I had thought about that might work is simply having a "report" button where the ninjafy button normally is... that way non-mods can report bad users to the mods (not all users know who the mods are.)

Yah, this idea's on the table. Unclear when or if it will be implemented, though. All in good time.

PMing could work, but like I said, not everyone knows who the mods are, and not many people know whos on when. and you could have the report button be only for people who have been here longer than say, 2 weeks... most spammers/trolls wouldnt be able to
(ab)use it then, because they would be banned by then.

The problem with it is good members gone spammer though... like joe halo master was... he was good for about a month, then its all downhill from there.

I seem to recall talk of a type of "Karma" system, meaning that people with lower karma would have restrictions on how many posts they can make in a certain amount of time. I don't know if this kind of ranking system is going to happen.

Me? I'm content to sit out until Halo 2 is out and see what type of changes the website will hold for us.

no. too easily abused. if there was a delay for the karma though... that could work...

What if the Karma could only be given out by specific users?

Then again, that wouldn't work either. The mods are just too few, and I don't think Bungie would favor some over others.

I like the auto-report idea. It could say something like "Notify Ninjas". But you would only be able to use it, say, once per minute? That way spammers wouldn't be able to spam the mods as easily were it to be implemented.

or how about a person can only be reported once per thread? that would cut down on spamming the report button, both intentional and unintentional. the 'report' generated would be made available to the mods and would contain:
The offending member
A link to the offending post
who reported it
time it was reported
--
I think this to be almost flawless, because there is almost no way to spam excessively without a great deal of effort, and very few spammers exert such an effort while spammering.

  • 10.23.2004 10:14 AM PDT

I think with the problems these days with spam and such, there should be at least SOME restriction to people rushing into these forums. The best way of restricting people I think, would be a week period where people may only post in a single forum designated for new members, while they could also view other forums, but not post. This way they could be active and get a handle on the posting, and also get a feel for the forums at the same time.

However, there is no guarantee they will look around in the other forums, so this plan is flawed in that aspect. I trust that Bungie will take SOME action at some point to take a load off of the mods and our shoulders. More restrictions need to be imposted, and quickly.

I'm certifiable.

How about just a week-long period when new members can only post in existing threads? That isn't as restrictive as a full "mandatory lurk" but it does encourage looking at the threads already there to find answers. It'll help cut down on the repetitive thread syndrome... not eliminate it, sadly, but at least prune the problem down to a more manageable size.

-- Steve's seen this work well on other forums, though admittedly they don't have this volume of traffic.

The danger with that, is that some of the spoiler kids would take that as an opportunity to ambush spoil you -- Like they did to me. It would also tend to push spam into other topics.
Steve assumes that everyone here is as classy as he, and the others in the Septagon, and sadly - that's not the case anymore.

They're watching.

And I still don't get why everyone is saying spoilers have been sch a problem lately. I have seen maybe three, and two of those were things that I wanted to know. I've seen nothing that has ruined any plot. The only time I saw a real spoiler post it had "Warning: Spoliers!", so I was able to skip over it pretty easy.
