I can't connect to any internet games through my college network (Rowan U). I try to connect to a server through "Internet" by double clicking and it simply retries until it fails to connect. If I try to connect through "Direct IP" I can connect, but when it is loading the map I get "gathering exception data" and the game shuts down. There is no way for me to forward my ports, so is there an option within Halo (certain server and client port #'s) that can allow to play online?

In order to limit bandwith useage and possible legal implications of P2P networks many college networks now limit the type and amount of traffic, available ports and even do packet level inspection of traffic to detemine if it is withing their guidelines. I suggest that you check with your college manual or IT department as to the type of traffic they allow.

Halo and Halo CE standard configurations requires the use of these TCP and UDP ports

80 (Transmission Control Protocol [TCP]) - Halo looks to see if there is a Halo update available. If there is an update, Halo downloads the update through this port.

2302 (User Datagram Protocol [UDP]) - the game host listens on this port.

2303 (UDP) - the game client connects to the game host through this port.

you will have to have your IT department tell you if they are open to the outside world. For a a full explantion see this article:

So the game only allows you to change the ports for LAN purposes? To connect to the internet you must use 2302 and 2303?

Hm...I'm not certain, but I don't think the game can be manually reconfigged to use other ports for communicating. I think UXB's offered some solid advice up there, though.

You use the ports that the server specifies. If you are hosting, you may change the ports to whatever pleases you.
