It hasn't been announced for any other platform than the Xbox, so this is impossible to comment on.

Dude, think about it. The Xbox runs on a 733Mhz Pentium 3 cpu with 64meg of Ram and uses an Nvidia Geforce 3 or 4 modded chip. Why would a PC need two Gfx cards to duplicate Halo 2? Its not like they would improve the game any. Look at Halo PC.

  • 05.24.2004 2:01 PM PDT

I think you're looking at this in a very simple way. The chip in the Xbox is a modified GeForce 3, yes, but it still does stuff that not even PC graphics cards can do yet.

If you look at Doom 3 and Half Life 2, you can see clearly that they use a more advance engine then Halo 2. Even on the Xbox when running Doom 3, the graphics had to be tone down terribly so if Halo 2 were to be ported to the PC, the developer has to refine the graphics up to the PC level in order to get the sharpness that PC monitor has to offer. Also each computer system you have to consider is one of a kind because of operating system, hardware, and any misc program you have installed. The reason why Halo on PC didn't work perfectly was because of due to poor porting of the game because it was clearly rushed, anybody who can't see that but continue to judge the Halo PC as an excuse that Halo 2 doesn't work obviously has no knowledge of the PC at all. So Halo 2 can be ported properly if given enough time to refine the graphics and shader, unlike Halo PC that was developed less then 6 month.

Hmm, I could find a lot of people that would disagree with you (me included).

Well Goweb, what exactly is it that the Xbox gfx chip can do that a PC gfx chip cannot? The only advantage the Xbox has is that it need not worry about High Res gfx because NTSC cannot equal a PC monitor's resolution.

I have no idea - a guy from NVIDIA said it.

Unfortunately, the people you will find will mostly be fanatic "fanboys." I'm only reading and stating the facts from what I read in various game and tech magazine about those three games.
Of course, I'm not insulting Halo 2, its a beautiful game, but I find Half Life 2 and Doom 3 to be more advance in terms of technology and engine. That doesn't mean the storyline will suck or anything.
Since the PC is running a more advance graphic card then the Xbox itself, the engine has to build more powerful then the ones in the Xbox which has to include using the CPU to power up all the nice images on the PC.

More advanced engines? In what terms? Graphically, there isn't much difference between them - obviously there is, because they are different styles. In physics terms, there isn't much difference (except being able to piss around with the manipulator in Half-Life 2).

Graphically, if you take a screenshot of both Half Life 2 and Halo 2, look at it carefully, you can see the Halo 2 shots are little blurry then Half Life 2. And these are taken at High definition so there is no different between HD and PC monitor. The Engine for Half Life 2 uses more power from the PC so they have put alot more applications and CPU power in order to make it render as it is, so since it needs more power, it needs to be more advance while the Xbox just uses the graphic chip to power.

Half-Life 2 won't render using the CPU - the CPU passes on instructions to the video card for processing. And there really isn't any difference between my H-L2 and Halo 2 trailers, apart from style, of course.

Comparing a trailer is not a good comparison between the two because of the quality of the video files you are viewing whether it be ASF or WMV will either be blurry or sharp. You need to see them in action in order to see the difference and thats what I saw when I was there at E3. Anyways, we better discuss this in private message since it looks like I'm sending this thread off track from the real topic about Halo 2 being too advance for PC computers.

Or we can just not. We'll never agree.

Well, the problem here is that 1: Halo 2 is running in beta. It's not complete. The screens we see are, while gorgeous, without some effects turned on. 2: The Xbox can gen better looking games than a PC with equal statistics because A: People PROGRAM the games to work for the Xbox; they are optimized to work with that one set. B: The Xbox is far different than programming a PC: it's significantly easier. C: PC games have to be programmed to be compatible with a wide, wide range of chipsets and such. 3: Halo 2 is still restricted to the Xbox's hardware. It's impossible to compare the graphics. It's like comparing your 89 Corsica with the speed limiter on, with no anti-lock brakes or airbags, to a Ford GT. It's apples and oranges.

BTW, if you check out Xbox screens of Doom 3, they look better than Halo 2 because of the darkness, and the attention paid to the graphics. In Halo 2, though, there are far more elements to be concentrated on. Look for the final game to have graphics equal to that of Doom 3 or HL2 on the 'Box.

BS , all the new video cards are 10 time better than that -blam!- geforce 3. Its all about OPTIMISATION.

The cpu does render the basic graphics. The video card only apply pass of all the visual candy + helping the cpu. Cpu is responsible of almost all the shadow calculation.

Well, to be fair, neither is Doom 3 nor Half-Life 2.

Hey - I just heard it from a guy from NVIDIA when he was talking about the Xbox chip. It's just got some features that PC graphics cards don't actually use yet.
Cpu is responsible of almost all the shadow calculation.
Well, considering that you can't turn on shadows unless you have a good video card...

I'm pretty sure that a 9600XT-9800XT could make short work of any gfx technology in the current Xbox. I would also say the same for a Geforce Ti4600 and higher. I'm an Xbox owner, and its my favorite console, but Halo 2 wouldn't be a problem for a current PC unless it was ported by flamming idiots! I'm sure that if we are graced with a PC rendition, Microsoft will see that we will get exactly that!

If Doom 3 had to be dumbed down in order to work on the Xbox's hardware, then Halo 2 has to be dumbed up in order to get the full visual graphic of a PCgame. Just recently microsoft released this Development kit that can convert Xbox's game to pure Directx9.0 shader so I think there may be a Halo 2 on PC.

Wrong. The GPU renders everything. No exceptions. The CPU tells the GPU what to render.

I agree with Coylter.... All I meant by starting this, was that I'm just very disappointed that many people are not willing to go that extra mile to just tweak in different settings and configs for different PC's.... I only bought Halo 1 to catch up on the story-line and grab sum multiplayer experience before Halo 2 was released...

I'm just a plain old gamer, and I dont go to conventions about Video cards and the like.
