Recognizing that each map has a formula and balance of its own is of utmost importance. Camping is counter-productive in more ways than I care to mention (but to each his own, right?). Knowing the map, being able to evaluate a situation without hesitation but never jumping into a situation you can't win. Paying attention to the little things, moving tactically and strategically, always being aware of your weapons and ammo set-up and your opponents, never being forced to reload while in a position without cover, etc.
The best players are the all around players. I have nothing against people saying they're 'the best snipers' or people who camp - it's all a matter of opinion. But thinking logically, the best players are the ones that can do it all. "Specialists" might be good at what they do, but what they do is only a portion of what Halo is.
Edit - The aspects of Halo I mentioned are the fundementals in the way I play. Wow, awkward sentence. =\
