how exactly does halo itself destroy all life in the universe in order to starve the flood to death?

It explodes I think. Which makes all other Halo installations explode destroying all life in the galaxy.

nah, it covers too big an area to be a bomb. its never explained but i always assumed that its some sort of energy shockwave, maybe something to do with subspace maybe.

haha, reminds me of the ultimate weapon in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. in that the weapon destabalises every sun in the galaxy causing the whole thing to go supernova at once.

Yeah, but Hactar was shocked, so he screwed up the bomb. The Silastic Armorfiends of Striterax weren't so happy about that. I can't remember if the people of Krikkit fixed it or not.

It can't be a bomb, because then it wouldn't just destroy life, it would destroy everything. (Yes 343, I'm looking at you.)

BTW, if it's a bomb, then blowing it up at the end of halo 1 would just destroy life, too. And it had firing nodes or something. Anyway, it probably shot a wave across the galaxy and the wave destroyed everything sentient.

Halo isn't designed to kill The Flood, it's designed to starve them by killing their food - Humans, Covenant, everything. All we know is that it'll cause a blast radius that stops The Flood from feeding so they wouldn't be able to reproduce. And although the blast radius may seem small compared to the size of space, lets not forget that there is more then one Halo. Unfortunatly, killing The Flood means killing yourself.

Thanks for not answering the question.

I think the Halo Installation sends some sort of pulse through a portion of the galaxy. It's like a bomb that kills people but leaves the environment unharmed.

Maybe some sort of lethal pulse of radiation?

I would have to agree with jepepper. It sounds reasonable.

I thought that it just sends the Flood onto the planets and infects or eats the living organisms.

The people of Krikkit made their own bomb. But it was defective. When the Armorfiends destroyed Hactar, his dustcloud surrounded Krikkit and he tried to guide them to make the bomb. But they were cut off by the Slo-Time Envelope. Hactar, however, made his own bomb and planted it in Arthur's handbag and Arthur almost destroyed the universe with it... disaster was averted by his terrible bowling skill and subsequent tripping over his handbag and failing to miss the ground (and thus flying).

Can you tell I've read the books a few dozen times? ;-)

Anyway... they mention a "pulse" So I think it's safe to assume some sort of plasma or possibly sonic pulse wave. Magnetic wouldn't really effect anything alive. It might also be some sort of radiation pulse... that would wipe out a fair amount of life.

But the flood are living creatures why don't they die aswell instead of starving to death, they would die straight away.

Some living things are more resistant to some lethal forces than others. If it was a piulse of radiation, they might just be highly resistant or immune to it.

Halo, when activated, serves as a biological weapon that destroys all living things with sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood. Therefore, it starves the Flood to death. A single Halo ring can wipe out life within a radius of 25000 lightyears, but when the rings are united, the effect will be on the entire galaxy.

I'm thinking more like the Trih'Xeem. A weapon employed by the Pfhor to annhialate rebellious races. It destabilises a star and causes it to 'nova. Taking out the nearby planets. Now if the Halo did this to even just 2 or 3 big stars nearby it would do enough damage to starve the flood... Hell if a star was to 'nova within 100 light years of us we'd be gone...

Tristan ;-)

The main problem here, though, is the fact it says it kills those things that have sufficient biomass to support the flood. That implies somethings survive if their small enough, and that implies that there are planets left over afterwards. All the explosion theories would actively destroy the galaxy, not just wipe it clear of life, as is stated.
