Subject: Our group was hacked

It seems one of my groups was hacked into, and all the threads, news and announcements were deleted. s1Lv3r GuArd1aN seems to suspect the Supremists were behind this.

Posted by: s1Lv3r GuArd1aN
I just looked in this group and... the threads are deleted! I heard the Supremists were out to destroy all elite groups so maybe they did this. I think they are capable of hacking, so I advise everyone to change their passwords, before your account is taken over. Its likely the Anti-elites, Supremists are involved with this misfortunate event. I'm very sorry Spartan101, the Supremists are targeting ***.

(I removed the group name so it's not in any way advertising)

So, what should we do to protect ourselfs. And should I report this to Achronos?

Guess what I just found out? s1Lv3r GuArd1aN is an anti elite, and he aint one of our mods either. That heretic!

It wasn't hacked. You either gave them power yourself or they tricked you by giving them your password.

Well obviously not.

Change your Passport password, and in the future, don't give out important security permissions (marked in red in the security role editor) to people who you don't implicitly trust.

You're responsible for your own group - good and bad.

There are only 3 mods in our group (who have served for quite some time) and it definatly wasn't us who did it, and we sure as hell didn't give anyone our passwords. And even before we let people in our group we search their name up, and if they seem bad we reject 'em. I think that's good security. But I'll take you're advice and send the word to change our passwords.

-Quaere verum.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I also recommend you constantly check the security history viewer in the admin controls section. If you spot anyone doing anything they shouldn't you can take appropriate action.

No one is going to take the time to hack a bungie group. If they're good enough for that, they have bigger fish to fry. You either gave away too much power, or someone got your password.

If you posted your group history someone might be able to help you figure out who did it.

The things marked "(* caution!)" in red shouldn't be given to anyone but you. Not even your best buddy in the whole wide world should have them. If you still trust people enough to give them these roles it's your loss.

If has to be one or the other. Either someone was foolish enough to make their password easily available or you have trouble accepting that not everyone is trustworthy. And trust me, no one on Bungie.net should be trusted. Not even me. Not even....yourself.

"You know what happens when you leave someone hanging for too long? They fall."

*Click* Psshhhhhhhh

If you gave those moderators the power to change ranks (no matter if they have full control or not), they can take over your group. Sure, they cannot directly change your rank, but there are other ways. If you trust someone enough to allow them to change ranks, they probablly have the ability to accept members too.

It is as simple as someone making an alternate account, then having their mod account accept them. After that, all they must do is rank the alt account up to full control, and your group is at their mercy.

I hope no one uses this information for the wrong reasons (though someone always will). That's most likely what happened to your group.

No one was booted from the group (I know, I'm part of it), only the threads and news were deleted. This leads one to believe that the only power a member would have needed was the ability to delete and modify posts and news. They wouldn't even need total control.

I've seen group history records where it say that a preson was given Full Control by one of those Anonymous Users (Deleted) messages, and I know it's not a user name because it's too long, and there no profile on them.

Yes I know what I saw, I copied and pasted it into a PM and sent it to the founder of the group and they fixed that, but I'm still baffled by it.

Anonymous Users are members who used to have an account on Bungie.net. You've heard of people with accounts back in 2004, but had to make a new one cause their old was deleted, or the member simply stopped coming. Thats who Anonymous Users (Deleted) are

No, this was a deleted account, who changed the rank of someone like a half an hour ago before I saw it. It takes 2 months of not logging in for an account to be deleted (I think it's two months)

6 months actually.

Anyway, I suggest you make your password fairly long with plenty of numbers. Just make sure you remember all of it before you change it for sure.

Man I get tired of these complaints about getting "hacked". If you did get "hacked", it's your own fault. Deal with it.

Groups that are hacked, taken over, or destroyed deserve it for being weak. Individuals who can take over groups or destroy them should do it for the sake of ridding Bungie.net of wasteful and inferior groups.

Who the arbiter who decides what are inferior groups? If you don't like a group, then leave it alone. Inactivity kills far more groups than anything else.

Yes...someone tricked you into giving you their password. I won't reveal how it's done...but that's probably what happened. Or...one of your mods went psycho.
