I mean come on! There are at least three single player campaigns in developement right now! Not only that, but it was such an obvious feature in H1EK's guerilla! What scares me even more is that if they're not going to support SP content, then there's a good chance that the scripting commands cant even be used in a non-origional single player map.

Anyways, I know there's going to be a lot of threads about this, but try to keep this thread going to show that we want all the freedoms in map-making we had with Custom Edition!

Dark times look to be ahead for us, Zeph. The recent update does not bode well for many things we all hoped for. We might also have to pay to play online as well.

Yeah, that's kinda rediculous that you have to pay to use your own dedicated server, so here's what I think. From what I gathered though, was that you'd have to pay for a Vista Live account to be able to link your XBL gamertag to it. LANplay and dedicated servers, though, would be free to play on. The Vista Live stuff would be as close to XBL as you'd get. That would be things like arranged games and such. I'm not quite sure why you'd want that when you have dedicated servers, though.

If so, I'm not buying it. That's right, I'M NOT BUYING IT! I won't even DL it illegally. THAT'S how much M$ will suck if we have to pay. In fact, I might just dump my plans for an Xbox 360, and get a PS3 instead. Halo Wars can get stuffed too. [/rant]

Rawr!

Its a shame that Bungie one again has decided to shut the door on parts of the editing community. They saw how determined to get these features part of the community was. Why not just leave them in there, and let those of us who know what we're doing use them to their full potential?

BUNGIE HAS CUT CUSTOM SINGLE-PLAYER SUPPORT FROM HALO 2 VISTA. COPY, PASTE, AND BOLDFACE THIS INTO YOUR SIGNATURE IF YOU ARE AGAINST THIS CUT.

Taken from my post in The News forum:

Will it be possible for players to create their own campaign or co-op levels for Halo 2?

No, the user-created content tools are exclusively for multiplayer maps and game types

Can anyone else spot the throbbing fail in that Q/A?

C'mon guys, not everyone likes multiplayer. What about those of us who want to make something, and then blow it up without fifteen 12-year-olds spouting "n00b," "lol," "f4g," "omg," and "rokkit hor3." I know quite a few people who bought Halo and Halo 2 only for its story. They avoid multiplayer like the plague for the aforementioned reason.

If scripting support for the HEK wasn't found out, I'd have left the Halo CE modding scene a long time ago. Being able to create your own universe with your own story is a very, very cool thing.

Greetz p0lar. Yes, SP maps are cool. But, as Pkmnrulz said, Bungie has shut the door on us.

I agree. SP has some great opportunities for modders.

I wasn't aware that we need to pay a subscription fee to play online.

Technically they haven't said they will. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Here's what I think: It's a bad idea if they do make people subscribe to Live Anywhere to play Halo 2 online. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, IMO. That would mean you would have to pay for Live Anywhere to play online for any game, not just H2. Many, many PC gamers would... for a lack of better words, not like it.

However, it will be a complete failure if you already pay for Xbox Live and if you have to pay a fee to pay on Live Anywhere on PC games as well.

CMT Mod team leader

Contrary to what you all think, I don't think that the SP and UI features will be removed. I just don't think the tags will be included.

However, if bungie is considering removing the actual code from the tools, I must ask why. SP maps can't do any damage to the game, although I can see them being tricky for the UI. If bungie doesn't want to support SP maps, at least leave it to us, the modders, to support it, like we did with Halo CE.

SP IMO, are the best part of Halo. I'll get Jcap to post the statistics of the CMT SP maps for CE later. I can say that they were a huge sucess, and that SP support in H2V will be an even bigger sucess.

Join the Modacity Forums - a community focusing on the modding abilities of Halo PC, Halo CE, and Halo 2 PC.

I don't understand at all why you have to close the door on the modding community like this. Many games out there today and many of those coming out after Vista's launch are coming with fully featured SDKs. You have seen how far people have come with these in the past, so why stop here? Why go the extra mile to disable something that would be completely harmless to leave in and has a ton of potential? Can you even give a real, non-bull-blam!- filled answer? Better yet, can we please have a thread where we can ask questions and get REAL answers from some of the developers?

For many, Halo 2 Vista was being viewd as chance at improvement on what many did not like about Halo 2 for the Xbox. Not anymore. All that it looks like we can benefit from now are aesthetics, dedicated servers, and some custom maps. What major things does Halo 2 Vista have over Halo Custom Edition now other than enhanced graphics? From what we can make out of this FAQ/update, you have all failed us.

A big issue so far has been adapting Halo 2 for the PC Platform.

Part of this is the incorperation of free play through DA INTERNETZ and Lan networks.

Yes, jcap. Dead on.

Additions to H2v from HCE:

-Graphics
-Friend Lists
-Messaging
-Dual Wielding
-Better netcode
-SDK Documentation

Stuff that's dropped from HCE to H2v:

-Solo Map Creation
-ui.map Creation
-Widget Editing
-Script Creation

Even though more has been added, the weight of the features dropped is greater than that of what's added.

I think they may be removing some vital parts of the code that pertain to single-player map creation. When Gearbox released the HEK, all they did was lock a few things and release essentially as is. But for the H2V release, Bungie is actually putting a lot of effort into the toolset, so they are more likely to put in the effort to remove, not lock, part of the code we need for single player.

If we were given more (any) support for single player in HEK, the CE community would have many more exciting single-player levels. I personally would have put a lot of effort into single-player level design had it actually been documented and fully-functional. Single-player in Halo 1 is my favourite aspect of the Halo series, and I wish that I had the opportunity to tweak and modify the Halo 2 campaign to my liking. There is so much potential in single player that I wish could be realized.

NOTE:
They did not say anything about scripting. They said that it will not support single player maps, only Multiplayer maps. You probably wont have anything AI, but that does not rule out other scripting options.

Also about the Live service, the service probably would be free, but there would be the Premium content you would have to buy. IDK what that would be though.

I want to know, from a Bungie employee a good reason why the have taken out SP support. Are they really this ignorant? If my question goes unanswered I am going to PM a Bungie employee myself. This is ridiculous, limiting they halo community once again with irrational actions. If the answer is, "Because if we enabled SP support we would have to make tutorials covering it." This right here is downright bull-blam!-. You do not need to make the tutorial cover SP creation.

Look at what the Halo CE community has done, we did all of this off of the simple HEk tutorial and Kirk's tutorials. And we have made so many awesome maps, and we have found out so many features that Bungie didn't even think we would ever be able to use.

I know we are the minority, and they know they majority are idiotic teenagers who have no patience nor the time to actually learn the HEK and it's capabilities. But they have no right to take it out on us, even if we are the minority.

Tell me then, Bungie, what is your so called 'reason' as to why there will not be SP support.

If they remove all SP functionality with the editing kit, we most likely won't see scripting either. Also, keep in mind, the need for scripting was partially eliminated with Halo 2. Things like device machines and controls sync over the netcode for Halo 2 without having to be scripted with bipeds and vehicles, and that kind of thing. Thats one of the main things that scripting was used for in Halo Custom Edition maps.

Along with that, it was also used for secrets and tricks and stuff. However, I don't think Bungie wants maps with huge complex secrets (e.g. Tiamat's Hugeass), so we won't see scripting for just that.

still, scripting still has its uses. Opening a hangar door by remote in a multiplayer map and having an AI'd vehicle fly from point A to point B as a result just for immersion wouldn't be possible without scripts unless you include the vehicle as part of the animation.

  • 11.09.2006 5:41 PM PDT

AI isn't going to sync over the netcode anyways - not even with scripting... so, that idea is kind of out of the question.

I was really disappointed when I read that. What's the reason for removing SP support from the Halo 2 Vista Editing Kit? I really hope that someone will find away around that, and that Bungie doesn't take away any possibility of Single player maps. I was hoping that Halo 2 Vista would fully support SP map creation. I had a few ideas for a few little side stories in the Halo Universe.

Yeah, our posts might not have gone unnoticed, but they have seemingly become ignored.

Anyways, I know there's till time for things to change, but lets go over my tips for a successful port now that a "FAQ" has been released.

Please don’t newbify it:
I'm really glad that the toolset is made of the same things, but they've been cut down to a point it's rediculous. Dont get me wrong, I love these little things like model preview and so forth, but it's even more limited than the origional HEK from before Kornman got ahold of it.

Maps:
Having a Bungie hosted central map center scares me. I say 'unofficially' support halomaps.org. It's worked soo far and it's allready developed to a point where it can start hosting H2V maps. Just list it as a place to get custom content and it'll be fine. If you want to, donate to the site and help cover costs. Also, make notice of http://www.halo2vista.net. It's going to hit the ground running. No point in making a place here when you allready have experienced people going at it.

Security:
Well, as long as you have the same type of map verification system that CE uses, you wont have a problem.

Documentation:
I can tell you have multiplayer covered, but I'm incredibly disapointed that you wont be going over anything else. I mean, you're leaving us in virtually the exact same position as the HEK.

Full access:
Ohwell..... See thread title....

Servers:
You've got that covered. I was hoping that there could be a huge array of things done with the H2DS similar to CS:S servers, but I'm not quite sure that'll happen now. You're talking about it, but heck, you've just disowned SP.

Netcode:
Should be fine.
