We've been here since you left.
We left before you came.

This thread is aimed more towards the mods.

I just wanted to know why there isn't a full customization option for the forum-goers. Like why we can't choose what color our font is, why there isn't a post total, and why we don't have titles like "Master Forum Ninja"?

I'm not saying Bungie.net would be better or worse without this, just wanted to know why they've never considered this.

I can field the first one from the stories I've heard...evil stories...But anyways there used to be colors here, and then people started abusing them, writing all of their posts in the same color. Just thinking about what could happen makes my blood boil...so annoying.

Post totals sound sort of obvious. Elitism. Heck, they got rid of the join dates posted under our avatars after every post just for that reason. It's not like they actually serve any point. The same pretty much goes for titles.

Hmm, I guess that would make sense.

I just don't know why you need to feel superior over someone on a videogame website.

I don't understand it either, but people still do it to fuel their egos.

We don't know...but we...errr...I should say Achronos, tries to make sure that people don't get the opportunity to do so.

Well other forums on many other sites do the same thing, and I haven't seen any economic and social discrimination there.

Maybe the mods could give it a Beta.

I noticed the same thing, they say it'll cause elitism but like it or not, if someone wants to be "elite" there will be a way to do so. I also noticed that websites that had post counts etc, ranks along with that did not have elitism.

You'd be surprised. I remember just before they got rid of join dates. If an older (usually '04, maybe early '05) member found a post of a newer person to be stupid/idiotic/not of the same opinion as theirs, they would often say something along the lines of "Stupid '06/'05er, you've only been here a few months, Noob".

These posts were often made without any justifiable reason when the elder simply didn't agree.

I for one am glad they got rid of them under avatars.

People elite themselves over others about spelling. So I don't know why it would be a bad dea.

People elite themselves over anything, join dates are still there obviously and can be still used.

Well ever since the join dates have been gone, the left side of the screen just feels empty....

If I had a cool title to see when I logged onto Bungie, I would feel honored and priveleged to post here.

Personally I think post count that equals a title, eg forum junkie etc would be a good idea. I think the flood should be exempt though, aswell as private groups.

The rebuttal to the point about "other sites" is that most other sites don't have the amount of traffic that Bungie.net does. When you get elitism there, you catch it really quickly, since there's plenty of moderators and few posts for the member to hide in. You don't quite get that here.

Now the question I love asking, concerning your want for a title: Why?

  • 11.12.2006 4:03 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Other forums are more mature than some of our forum-goers. For some reason no-one else has mentioned this, but we did have post totals under our names when the New Hotness first arrived.

Trust me, I was there: it was a problem. There was one guy who wanted to be the first person to 1000 posts and then every other benchmark, so he posted a LOT in true forum cop fashion (except he was stupid, so he pissed everyone off and even sometimes told stosh what he should do). There were other people like him who were trying the same thing, so we got a lot of semi-useless posts to up the post counter. I don't remember anyone actually saying "STFU NOOB, I have 800 posts!", but Achronos didn't want that to happen. If you look back far enough, you can find the news post about its being removed. The same thing goes for the join dates. Being elite over spelling and grammar is different because that's something other people can actually control and change, unlike join dates or a really high post count.

Colors were also originally on the site, but they were removed because Achronos only left them in by accident, people were doing stupid things like making every post in lime green. Also, Achronos wanted to add the new system (Bungie staff post in gold and mods post in white, to make it easier for people to find "official" answers), and if people could still post in colors they could impersonate important people.

You can't have a "Master Forum Ninja" title because (drumroll please) you are not a Master Forum Ninja. If you are a moderator or Bungie employee, then you get a title. People can't have their own titles because that would cause chaos and the aforementioned problems with impersonation, and there are no achievement titles because of the aforementioned elitism problems.

Well for one, respect and for two, for the hell of it. It would just sound cool to have a title like Rainbow Grunt or somewhere along those lines.

You want it to get respect? Isn't a bit...errr...elitist?

And why not just have no ranks "for the hell of it"?

Now I will say that if you absolutely must have a rank other than member, there was an idea floating around to make generic ranks that allowed members to pick something else that wouldn't carry any connotation of "I'm better than you."

For the record, i'd piss my self silly if there was an Armatik action figure.

"Lazy -zapp!-, what the hell are you doing playing with me? Get to work lazy ass."

But again, there would be no point in that.

People in the Septegon are obsessed with keeping elitism out, I've noticed over the past few months. No point? You could say having avatar's have no point, as more than one person can have the same one when they are there for "individual" purposes as would post count, "rank" etc.

I personally don't like it when people have the same avatar as me. I know I can't do anything about it. But it's all about indiviuality.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Making good posts and generally being a decent member is all anyone on this site should strive for. Quite frankly people who do it actually stand out more, have their own flair to their posts that give them individuality, and are more respected by their fellow members.

For me I like to think I make somewhat decent posts sometimes, I do have some flair (35 pieces to be exact), and I do get some respect from my fellow members for doing so. It makes me feel good to be a decent member of such a high traffic site. An individual avatar, pretty text, and a title would just not do anything for me.

If you think that you can only be individual by your looks, then you might want to think again. Plenty of members are known for their posts, and not their avatars.

But Agamemnon would be proud...

Thank you. I had to add a little bit of "flair" to it. I am glad the reference wasn't lost on anyone.

I would also like to add that adding more "eye candy" to the forum with titles, and colored text would cheapen the site. I like the clean look that we have here. It is stright forward and easy to understand for new people that join. Simplicity is definitely the way to go.

Oh an Mabian just to let you know your reference wasn't lost either. ;-)

If there was colors, costom avatars, posting images, people will abuse it. No post count because of spammers. No titles because to get one, you usually have to have a certian amount of posts... spammers.
