Actually, evn though I never like Halo 1 that much, I think Halo 2 was one of the best shooters of all time.

Halo 2 should have new weapons and vehicles. There I said it. I've mentioned this many times. Hell, I'de give my left kidney for this.

Bungie, however, doesn't want to do this because they feel that they want to be true to the orignal Halo 2.

Does anyone else here think that being true to the orignal Halo 2 isn't gonna cut it?

Let's not forget Dark Forces (A game older than some of you) Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. DF2:JK Mysteries of the Sith. Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy. And I'll also go into some of the Star Trek FPS games (As much as it pains me to admit) STV:Elite Force was pretty good.

How dare you? Star Wars is not science fiction. It's space opera, or space fantasy. Fiction, though it may depict events that may or may not have happened, must be in a certain way realistic. I'm not saying they're bad games, mind you, it's just that I think people shouldn't categorize Star Wars with general science fiction.

Halo is the same.

1: The Dark Forces series ROCKED. Hell, DF2: Jedi Knight was the first FPS I played, and it was damn good.

2: Star Wars is classified as science fiction. Specifically, 'soft' science fiction because the science behind it isn't very well explained. Star Trek is also 'soft' science fiction because the science behind THAT is total crap.

3: Halo is NOT the same as SW or ST because at least most of the science has some realistic aspects behind it: stuff like the actual Halo ring being at the only stable Lagrange point in the orbital system, and the magnetic bottle stuff for the plasma charges.

4: You're all philistines. (Just kidding!)

Halo is just as much space opera as anything else you've mentioned. The behaviour of the plasma weapons alone gets an "F" in realism, real plasma doesn't behave anything remotely like that.

The magical energy shields that don't involve even remotely any real world physics are another.

A real plasma gun would behave almost the same as the Halo PC flamethrower. Halo plasma weapons act like they are shooting little blobs of napalm.

Maybe the covenant have developed the technology to keep the plasma in a projectile like form? This is a technologically superior coalition here. Anything could be possible.

Maw

If I remember correctly plasma is just a heated gas with its electrons stripped of it. Plasma would take the form of a gas like cloud, and it is possible to force gasses into a single shape. As for the shields, plasma reacts to magnetic fields. The shield system in Halo is not specified, but it acts like a powerful magnet that absorbs energy.

Oh, and a plasma gun wouldn't act anything remotely like a flamethrower. An example of plasma is lightning.

well hey, maybe the plasma guns just have microwaves shooting at grapes, or sugar. ever seen those vids on youtube? that's what we call CRAZY.
if not, here.

What "reason"? What "logic"? Because I don't see any here.

on a non-realism note i'd have to say that Half-life two nearly surpassed Halo 1 as my favorite game of all time. it lost because i played Halo first and i only had a 9550 the first time i played HL2. it is a WAY better game then Halo 2 will ever be.

Reasons to buy Halo 2 Vista:
1. Keyboard and mouse
2. Users can create maps
3. Better graphics

Reasons Not to buy Halo 2 Vista:
1. You can buy a Keyboard and mouse adaptor
2. You might see 3-6 professional maps from the Map editor, the rest will be crap
3. Must upgrade to Vista
4. A possible "pay to play" system (notice I said possible)
5. No Custom single player content
6. Autoaim... on a PC shooter
7. Some sort of "xbox live" thing... on a PC shooter..

Dude, it's called Live Anywhere. And it's not just for Halo 2 Vista.

The keyboard and mouse adaptor doesn't give you a true mouse and keyboard control. Even if you put up an insane look sensitivity, the mouse won't work like it would on a PC shooter.

True true... but does Halo 2 Vista need it?
It could be great, it could be good, it could be bad...
Its too early for me to tell, but alot of people aren't exactly sold about it, so that's why I put it in the "not" reasons.. .

And you can't judge custom content before you see it. You will see alot more than 3-6 maps that are professional quality or better.

Agreed, Chewy. When you compare Halo and Halo 2 together, Halo 2 makes Halo looks like an eight bit video game. I mean, I've seen some jaw-dropping maps in Custom Edition, some that were even better than the maps and levels Bungie has made. I look forward to amazing maps in Halo 2 Vista.

Unfortunately, what I certainly do not look forward to in Halo 2 Vista is the second coming of the most overrated, most unbalanced maps in the history of Custom Edition: Coldsnap and Hugeass.

Chewy Gumball

Maybe the covenant have developed the technology to keep the plasma in a projectile like form? This is a technologically superior coalition here. Anything could be possible.

The miraculously self sustaining containment field neccessary to hold that plasma blob together would need to be several thousand times stonger than steel if that weapon is indeed shooting real plasma blobs that are able to fly in a straight line in atmosphere.

This begs the obvious question; if their shield technology is that good, an elite energy shield should be able to easily shrug off hundreds of tank rounds.

Trekkie

and a plasma gun wouldn't act anything remotely like a flamethrower

Yes it would. Plasma is a superhot ionized gas. The very first thing it's going to do upon leaving the muzzle of a gun is disperse in all directions, pretty much like the Halo flamethrower.

So this plasma must have some sort of magical self sustaining field. Not only that, but the plasma must be dense enough to have an almost level flight path in air, which means it must be close to the density of air, or it'll simply shoot upward like a hot air balloon.

For it to be close to the density of air, it's got to be under a ludicrous amount of pressure to squeeze it that dense. Pressure several thousand times more than the yield strength of good steel.

If the Covenant have the technology to compress plasma to a ridiculous degree, and then generate a magical self-perpetuating force field to keep it compressed, and have this all done by a device small enough and cheap enough to be used as a standard issue weapon given to foot soldiers as inept as Grunts, the war should have been over within a day or two at most. An elite should be able to point at a star system and make it go "poof".

95% of sci fi writers are lazy inept hacks who can't be bothered to think through the logical ramifications of the technology terms they so blithely toss around because they sound cool. A civilization with the tech level to use plasma blob weapons for infantry should be powerfull enough to make a Dalek shrit itself, which the Covenant clearly are not.

Things don't have to be perfect to be fun and thats the whole point of a story, and a game.

You are thinking in current terms, nothing about science fiction should be thought about in current terms.

The plasma doensn't need to be FULLY ionised, thereby reducing the power required to hold it in a sustainable projectile. It is quite possible to trap plasma in a magnetic bottle, and if the Covenant has magnetic shield tech available it could be possible for them to produce some sort of field that holds plasma in a small space and shoot it in a constant direction (which would also remove the need to keep it at air density) and dissapates on contact with stuff.

EDIT: I just looked at Wikipedia and found an amusing article on this - while I'm not quoting it as an accurate source I thought it was funny http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_rifle

And remember, the Covenant believes that altering or improving on these Forerunner technology is sacriligeous. Maybe the Forerunner didn't need to develop the use of incredibly strong shields, because I don't think they had any enemies with such destructive weapons as they did.
