Why did the Forerunners keep specimens of the Flood if they planned to activate the rings? I mean, I know they were studying them, but why continue to keep them if they were no longer going to be around to study them?

Why not just release them all before you activated the rings? That way they would all be wiped out.

Something to think about...

if the flood are not contained how would there be life ever. when life starts to develop into decent creatures(cavemen, dinosaurs whatever)their is nothing to stop the flood from spreading, and no one to activate the rings.

I don't follow... Activating the rings does contain the flood, just as it did the first time they were activated. It seems the only Flood that weren't killed off were the ones that the Forerunners kept to study.

Activating the rings does not contain the Flood. It pevents them fromm destroying all life, there's a difference.

No... It destroys all food for the flood. Starving them and killing them off.

I'd call that "containing" them, wouldn't you?

If the Ring is activated it destroy's every dam thing on a galactic scale, So even if the flood some how survied the Huge Fugging Blast They would have nothing to feed on , and would be floating In the middle of no were. There wouldent be evn any stars to look at :(

Not true. What the halos do is kill sentient life. Everything else would remain intact.

Obviously the Flood can survive without food for at least a 100 000 years, but only in its infectious stage. Otherwise by now there would be no Flood to be discovered.

Did you read The Library forum banner?

See definition 2. They had the DNA and a few samples stored away.

To play or not to play....

Activating the rings will not kill the Flood.

Halo kills sentiant life and hence by starving the Flood. The Forerunners feared that even afte eons of time the Flood could still survive in its lesser forms (spores). Hence the Flood could rise again.

So the Forerunners designed Halo to contain a few samples and study them. This was probably deemed as being safe. There would not likely be any sentient life around for quite some time. Hopefully by the time sentiant life found the rings they would be able to study it enough to know not to release the Flood.

The Forerunners probably hoped that a cure could be eventually found but they realised that by the time they found it they might be all infected. Having such a dangerous organism controlling extremely high technology would be dangerous to all life in the galaxy.

It was a tough call but it probably the only way out at the time.

It is possible that a spore could have survived elsewhere and the Flood would rise again.

Keeping some specimens around for research purposes was the only way of possibly finding a cure.

The Forerunners hoped the reclaimer (or at least the reclaimer decendants) would return and know what to do.

So, you're saying that they kept the specimens around fgor future generations to study? Doesn't that seem rather risky?

i believe that in the heat of the moment (the flood running rampant and everyone deciding to take the galactic kool aid) the forerunners may have forgotten about the few specimens they had stored away, or, more logically, had no means in which to dispose of them. since doing so would require to go deep into the halo installations, where the flood had been released and are coming from (giving that area the highest concentration of flood population.) im sure the idea crossed there minds but there wasnt anything they could do about it at that point.
