May I ask what the point of this would be? It would just become a nuisance and another excuse for elitism to see how many "buddies" you have. I say no, especially since there would be absolutly no point in doing this. Yes, to see which one of your friends are on bungie, but you may just as well look at the forums and see if they have posted.

Wow, some people just have to find a way to bring elitism into the equation.

You and I both know that's what is going to happen if this is put into place trigger. We are trying to avoid elitism, not feed it, so to speak.

I don't see how a buddy list promotes elitism, can someone explain it please?

In theory, if you have more friends than someone else, you (being Joe Member, not Sketto) might boast about that fact to people who don't have as many friends. In other words, someone like Impurity might lord his number of friends over me.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with the purpose of it all. It's not like when someone adds you to a buddy list that conversations magically happen whenever you are both online. And if you don't believe that, just ask anyone's Xbox Live friends list or MSN Friends list. Some people say that you should be able to know when your friends are online, but I don't know why that would matter, because if you only want to talk to people when they are online, then chances are that you don't have much to say that is important.

Besides, it's all very superficial. You get friends by sending a little message to other people. You don't have to actually speak to them when you are both online in order to maintain a "friendship." They're simply there until one of you has a full friends list, and you or this person decides to drop the other in order to make room. Can't you just feel the love?

I've made friends without adding that person to a list of any kind (mental lists don't count though). The two I can think of off the top of my head are Robo and Iceman. It's not actually hard to do. You just...talk...to other people...in a PM or something. Or even on the main forums.

I make a point of not having any "buddies" on a video game site.

Excellent post, Mabian. That more or less sums it up.

I remember pitching the idea, though I'm sure I wasn't the first to do so. I made sure to include the flaws with having a Friends List, but I guess what I as aiming at was what the community thought about it.

And we've pretty much covered everything there is about it, and yeah, it wouldn't be needed. Making friends by getting to know someone is a lot cooler than saying "Hey, add me to your list so I can have 100 members and be popular!"

Oh, and I <3 you too, Mabian!! LoL

<3 you all.

There is already moap, aim, msn, etc for this. They shouldn't clutter their site with stuff like that *no offense*

Ok, yeah, I'm going to have to come on and say: That's the dumbest thing I've heard.

You just stabbed in the dark, looking for that, didn't you?

It's not like it would say "Friends: 332" under their name, or something. Sheesh. Friends = Friends. Not Trophies.

Sure, you can make them trophies, but you'll just get stomped on by everyone else.

Yes, but many may boast about it. Saying in their sigs,"195 friends and counting". Are you sure about that last bit? People with the most friends would stomp on those with lesser friends. From my point of view. That is how life works. Popularity overtakes knowledge.

O_O you looked at your friends balls when "he" sat on your head O_o

while we'r at it lets make BIM, Bungie Instant Messenger. lol, anyway, if they are good enough friends to you then they are prob on ur AIM/MSN/YIM/ anyhting else of urs. and u can check the forums.

lol i think i was the last person to post this idea before him/her like last year

  • 11.20.2006 3:02 PM PDT

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

I hate the world "elitism"... who started saying it around here anyway? People just say that in every new idea posted. Sure, it would be a definite in most ideas (like post counters), but a friends list, c'mon. I don't think that would do much harm.

However, the idea isn't very needed.

Popularity overtakes knowledge.

Not here it won't.

There happens to be knowledge, as well as intelligence, in more abundance here (especially with the people in charge of making things run smoothly) than most other places, on other forums or in real life.

I could care less if someone says "192 friends!" in their signature. Great. It just shows how pathetic they are, that they have to boast about their friends, as if they were insecure about not having enough.

Their loss.

You also have to realize that not everyone on this site is mature, and people would use it as a form of boasting. Sure, it wouldn't affect most people if someone boasted about having a full friends list, but it would be very very annoying to see.

A Friends list would be cool and all (or at least practical if you need to quickly message someone) but it's more or less not needed.

And I've found other ways to keep track of the people I may need to talk to ;-)

Thanks for the write-up Mabian, and I don't really see a glaring need for this. It's not like you get more information about the person when they become your friend.

And the elitism is a theory but I don't think that would happen in actuality. I don't see why everyone would have vast amounts of friends since that hinders the purpose of seeing who's online if you have to go through multiple pages of friends.

The other benefit would be that you can spam messages to everyone and message individuals, but that's not a must have option.

LOL, what if you accidently messaged 100 people with something that only one person was supposed to see?

Oh, the possibilities!
