343 Guilty Spark was the level where it really hit me. But I knew the game was sweet by the end of the first level.

To play or not to play....

November 15, 2001.

I remember I had this day off work (rostered day off, lucky me eh???) and off I went to get an X-Box I had no idea about any games. At the time I think there was something like a staggering 3 games I could choose from. Halo, Bloodwake and something else I can not remember. I got Bloodwake and Halo. I played Halo first and it was great from day one on.

I later played Bloodwake a few times. It was fun but it now sits on the shelf collecting dust hardly even worth trading in. I keep it largely simply due to it being amung the first things I brought with my X-Box. So it is a sort of gimmick. A cool game but not exactly my favourite.

I realized how great this game was the moment I got flanked by the A.I. At the time I had never heard of such a thing. The A.I in a FPS game actually coming up with tactics on how to kill me? That was simply unheard of back when I first got Halo. I was used to games where the A.I would simply shoot anything that moved and wasn't on it's own team and would go into death charge mode at random.

Well, the level Halo shocked the poop out of me with goodness, but it was "Assault on the Control Room" that did me in.

I like Halo.

When playing through the campaign for the 10th time was still more fun than any other game I've ever played for the first time.

The final cut-scene when I realized that I had just completed the Maw escape a half-dozen times before actually bothering to get on the ship.

Ever played Half-Life? The A.I. could flank too.

The level Halo really did it for me. I accidentally went the wrong way in the beginning and ended up by the waterfall. But then I ended up spending like twenty minutes just exploring around and being awed by the amazing water and light effects.

When I blindsided an enemy in Team Slayer on Ice Fields with a Needler, making him explode and fly off the ledge we were both standing on.

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

I was playing Two Betrayals earlier, and i was in one of those corridors with the little bit of the side, went down there to clear out the grunts and one of the cheeky beggars jumped around my side! i was quite surprised.

the beginning of the first cutscene, but i only realise that now. the beginning of halo is like the beginning of the first matrix: you dont have a -blam!- clue wats going on, but they throw you into the middle of it anyway.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

When the menu filled the screen I understood that there was a true epic feel to the game.
