i've spent 2 years in marching band (i am now a senior) and i decided that marching band and pep band aren't worth my time. granted, we aren't a major contender for a state competition. We are more focused on the Symphony and Jazz departments *of which we aren't really competitive in either*.
that said, i would NEVER think that marching band is more competitive than most sports. most musical competitions are called "festivals" or something happy like that. They are not purposefully meant to be competitive or else they'd call it "the super high school marching band PLAYOFFS" with the losing band living in shame for another year until it's time for that competition again. Sports are however, like that.
And i don't just say that because i'm rock jock. i don't play any real competitive school sports. (unless you think golf is ultra-competitive)
Jazz Band is a excellent part of my life, i believe fully in music's ablitity to open the mind and in all reality and very literally make you smarter. I really don't believe in making it a huge competition, because when a few groups get together it's 1) to hear and play great music and get better and 2) be competitive. In my opinon, that's what makes the Fine Arts a more productive, optimistic aspect of the high school expirence. Losing a football game is much more devestating to the football players than is losing a Band festival is the the band members.
Unless your overly-obsessed with slamming a drum and marching in funny clothing in perfect order.
"you play the music first, everything else is secondary" almost my band directors life motto. (he is overly-obsessed with band, but not with marching in funny clothing).
oh, lastly... marching band over Halo 2? umm, that's an interesting comparison, i mean.. i'd definatly prefer making music over playing a video game, but it seems unfair, everyone would rather do their most favorite hobby over playing a video game (unless that video game is their favorite hobby) Halo in my book, rocks every other game i've ever played, Jazz rocks every other type of music i'll ever play, but i don't think comparing the two is a fair comparison.
EDIT: wow, i didn't realize how hard-core that post was. i don't mean to say that marching band sucks or anything, lol i think it's alright...
