My friend Nick is the Snare captain in our schools Drum Corp. They win EVERY competition they are in, for like the past 4 years. He's awesome at the snare and pretty decent on a full set too.

Personally though I don't see what's so great about it, I'd rather play in a real band that might have a chance of going somewhere, but will most likely get booed off stage a few times before we give up. Atleast that way all the girls at school will know you as the singer/guitarist/bassist/drummer of YOUR BAND'S NAME HERE.

And it especially helps if you're good.

A band I am good friends with went on tour last month and just got back ummmm i think yesterday, they went down the east coast and back in a month, played like 20 shows I think. Anyway, they are really good and i've known all of them since like 6th grade, it'd be awesome if they got signed soon.

www.fourthelementmusic.com

their web site sucks mad -blam!- though, I used to design it then they decided to pay someone to do a better job and well... yeh... not much luck there,

www.pohalo.com/seds

that's my design site to get an idea of what I do...

wow i'm just full of shameless self promotion today.

PO was my halo clan but we kinda broke up until halo 2 comes out then i gotta make a new site for us.... just explaining that url.

It is compettive and more competitive than any sport. Band players practice more than 600 hours for every hour of playing time. The average athelete for non-team based sportes(such as running, pole jumping, swimming etc...) is less than 200hours. Although it should be more in favour of athletes b/c it takes longer to play a song than to jump into a pit of sand.

Ok, im not trying to flame u so dont get offended. band is,as i said b 4, a bit competitive. when placed next to SPORTS in the grand scheme of things, it is not. i have no idea where u got ur info about they practice 600hrs per hour of playing time, but it is -blam!- up. read my other posts, and u will know i have experience in this certain field.

...Hmn, sounds like something a very smart, intelligent, MATURE person would say. Oh, and by the way, It doesn't matter if you have a masters degree in every course available at your Universaty. If you tell your boss to fucl< off you're still fired.

"Personaly I'd pick marching band over Halo 2 any day"--> this is the part that i have trouble understanding, can you repeat the question?

True Tanadian, how many professionals do u know?
i konw 3. my grampa, and two close friends of the family. they dont practice all day long. they do have a life. and plus we're not discussing pro's, we're talkin HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND. there is a huge difference. i have no idea of ur source of info, but it is kinda screwed up.

I know plenty of perfessionals. What do you think they do all day to make a living? They rehearse, teach, practise etc. It is their job. Plus they practise when they get home. They don't get to play in the Toronto symphony orchestra by playing 15 minutes a week. Most of the perfessionals I know I am good friends with. And many of them have been playing for 50+ years. I think they know what they are talking aboot since they've been playing since before the cold war.

i never said they didnt practice, but not ALL day. yes, they have rehearsals, practices etc. but they do do other things. if u fixed pc's, and that was how u made a living, would u do it ALL day? no. u have set times to work, as does musicians who practice. u get off at a set time, possibly take off early to go to the movies or some other crap. as they do every ONCE IN A WHILE. not all the time.

well, you must be someone who plays video games all day and has no other life. some people actually like other things more than Halo. I know that must be a shock to you, since obviously you have less of a life than HellJumper. i would take soccer and good grades over halo 2 any day (I have good grades now, but if I were to give up either Halo 2 or straight As, I'd take the As.)

Where i come from MB is pretty competitive, and chess is even considered a sport. (atleast by some people) Why wouldnt MB. It takes up most of my free time, but its worth it because I know I have done something really hard. I would choose MB over Halo 2. Most of my friends are in MB (half of them i probably wouldnt have met without band) and Halo 2 is just a video game.
oh and the people saying MB is physical, i have a friend that has lost 16 lbs since the beginning of august from marching band even though he still eats a ton

Y is that even a question?! And why would u waste out time with it?

He's obsessed. You should hear him at school. It's marching band this, marching band that, blah, blah, blah. And he gets all mad at me when I think something is really cool and keep going on and on about it.

EDIT: And I voted "I don't care." BTW, Helljumper.

You people will never understand. You can't know what it's like to perform in front of an audience of well over a thousand people. You will never know the commradery or excitement that we feel. You can't understand what it's like when you win a competitoin and know that you are the best in the state, when all your hard work pays off. I don't know why I bother talking to you about it. It's obviously to difficult of a concept for you to grasp.

Don't diss your fellow musicians. I too am a learner of the art. I have been playing Bassoon for 4 years. Bassoon isn't a really good instrument for marching bands considering you have to sit down to play it. I like symphonic orchestral band. I plan to work at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra one day.

i wasn't dissing musicians. I was just pointing out the fact that I think he is a little obsessed, and that's okay. Everyone gets obsessed with something at least once in their lifetime.

He said You people. I'm a person. I meant don't diss me. It was a joke okay. I'm not trying to be mean.

Wow. Way to twist my words. I'll be more specific next time.

by the way wrestling is more physical school sport, also mentally it goes neck and neck with band because I bet most band people wouldn't wear a singlet.

Oh, we would. We have.

My opinions on marching band:

Marching: It's not too terribly fun. It involves moving about in learned patterns and playing learned pieces of music - all for the nth time. Plus, if you put your all you typically feel exhausted by the end of it - which is the only real payoff. Since you've marched the show so many times it really loses its fun appeal.

Learning a Show: This involves lots of time standing at attention. It involves lots of time in general. Not too terribly fun.

Games: Playing in the stands is great fun; it's probably one of the only rewarding aspects to me. I'm rarely bored while in the stands since that's one of the few places we're really lax on discipline. Sometimes during the game our drumline plays Korn's Blind, and I headbang. You wouldn't think this would get so much attention, but like pelvic thrusting, I'm great at it. I keep getting stopped about it at school (in positive ways) and even around OTHER schools in the Tucson area.

Competitions: Yawn. They're basically a whole lot of travel and a whole little of actual purpose. Go to one, get your rating, get your captions; it's just there to boost your ego. You already have your invitation to state.

Social: The band - particularily MY band - seems immature to me. I can never really 'get involved' with them directly because it always feels awkward. They ARE pretty funny sometimes, though.

Anyway... my section leader got hit by a car two days ago (in all seriousness), so I get to play the solo tonight and tomorrow. Hurray for 1/3 of the show standing still!

I'm pretty athletic, and let me tell you that it's very physical. My shows (At least) oftentimes require you to right backward slide across the field in 24 steps... while playing (meaning you can't breathe whenever you like - far from it, in fact). Our shows are insane. We never score too well because they're so hard
(we get excellents, on average), but what we do has always impressed the judges.

The people in band who tell you "it's not that hard" are probably the same people who don't do it properly. "Fundementals" is the name of the game. You need to move, no matter how fast or which direction, without breath, playing, and without bouncing at all. To make stuff like that a smooth glide takes a lot of legpower.

There's a really tough part in our show. Not only do I right backward slide across the field, nearly touching the ground I've dropped my weight so low, but the show is marched in four... conducted in one... felt in three... and played in two.
