Subject: People that get banned and then come back

I have noticed that there are many more spammers than there were a few months ago. Like I've seen is someone that always has the word Recon in their profile name (I'm not talking about Recon the forum ninja) he keeps on getting banned and then comes back later. Another thing I have seen is the n word of the week award.every Sunday someone comes to the flood and posts that. I have no idea how they are coming back but I hope it can be stopped.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Sadly its not so hard to make an alt account and and fool the soul.

Not much we the members can do.

Just have to hope the mods can take care of things best they can.

Hmm, I'd suggest that if it truly is a recurring problem, not only do the higher up Moderators know about it, but perhaps PMing Achronos with the problem.

I'd be quite suprised if Bungie.net didn't have some way to ban IP addresses. Of course, that's always very risky. You could ban entire ISPs from Bungie.net, or people can still have rotating IP addresses that defeat the purpose.

Jerks will be jerks.

Seriously, don't take me seriously.

Underground Pleasure - aren't you a bit curious?

This Pillage guy really needs to an IP ban...or something.

He keeps coming back. I'm sure he has about 100 alt. accounts by now.

Spam isn't as bad as it was, in 2005 a-lot of people spammed. I also have heard stories about days long ago that would just make you cringe. I think everyone from the Flood will remember the attack that involved a party of lemons, as well.

I will say that a PM to a Moderator or even the man himself could help things out a-lot.

If someone's pathetic enough to go through the trouble of making a new e-mail address every week and write up a "noob of the week" award that no one cares about, then I say let them have their fun.

IP bans don't do anything if the person's determined enough. There's a lot of sites to hide or alter your IP address.

Good advice everyone. All you can do is PM a mod. Try kd5shw's modwatch page (Its in the stickies too) and PM the most recently logged in mod. And don't, for the love of god, reply to spam. If you see spam or any other rulebreaking, PM a mod, don't post your opinion on the matter in the bad thread.

I think a few IP bans are needed every once in a while. Pillage is a good example. Also, if you suspect someone is using an alternate account, take note of who it is. Although I don't know what you'd do with the info, are we supposed to report suspected ban evaders to mods?

I don't think that spam is that bad on this site. It has its off days, but the mods usually take care of it pretty quickly. Though I shudder to think about what's going to happen when Halo3 finally comes out. I can barely comprehend all the spam that will result from millions of new mwmbers posting whatever comes to their mind. I'm going to run and hide when that happens (unless some more mods are added).

Quoted for truth.

Though a few days ago, the biggest spam attack I think I've ever seen occured. And it was in that period of time when there wasn't anyone around to stop it. But I doubt that will ever happen again, or at least any time soon.

But yeah, sadly, the Soul is easily dodged. And IP bans won't work- they've been suggested since day one of the Moderators getting blacklist tools, and debunked on the spot. It's still too easy to get around IP bans.

So the best thing to do is continue reporting spammers, and ignore them. But give 'em attention and they'll keep doing what they do.

They DO ban IP addresses. When I was perma banned (Don't ask) my friend tried to create a bungie.net login on my computer, and it popped up with a window saying something like "It's against bungie.net forum rules to create another bungie.net login if you are blacklisted."

That's what happens when the Soul catches you the right way. But people have learned to get around that.

If there was a way to keep someone off this site completely, it would be used.

He has a very checkered past. Right now, he bans users who have a prior banned account.

I'll look for some history on him and edit this post.

Ach! Was ist los?

Achronos is doing super-secret things that should make conditions a little better. In the meantime, all we can do is mop up.

(Pumps shotgun.)

Not working for me.If the soul does not give you an answer, try rephrasing your question or using different words. It's a simple soul and has much to learn.

It doesn't work on fire fox for me. If that's not the case, below the box thing, there's a list of what he says. Just type in "Bungie" or something halo related... like "marty."

Question: cortana about
The soul says: Mmmm, Cortana. If there was ever a virtual lady to make a Soul's wires hum....

Yeah, I had that linked in my sig a long time ago, but it only seemed to work %25 of the time, so I got rid of it. Great site still though. the Soul was so awesome

We better get back on topic. The soul can only do so much to stop alt. accounts. I guess we have to take BobBQ's words to heart and hurry up and wait. Though I don't really mind, like I said, the spam on this forum isn't that bad. All the replys it gets is though. Why don't you just stop replying to spam? It seems so easy...

Please stop suggesting IP bans.

Many, many people (including myself) have dynamic IP adresses. Thus, if you IP ban them all they have to do is reset their modem and they're fine.

Basically, if people are really set on wasting their time and that of other people, there really isn't much you can do about it.
