but i agree, stupidity should be punishable by death by ninja.

That's a bit over the top. Let's try to narrow it down to people who actually break the rules several times.

Stupidity, as we are calling it right now, is a problem on all of the forums to some degree or another. We should not be calling people that dislike your actions "stupid" simply because they dislike such actions. L.T. has a point in saying that humans don't like to be corrected. If you constantly correct them, they're going to vent that rage somewhere, and you're the most logical choice, since you're right there. However, I'm willing to believe that spammers and flamers are running rampant. Again, however, if someone is spamming or flaming another person, I hope you're reporting it to a mod and not trying to handle it yourself.

I'm not calling them stupid because they dislike my actions. I'm not even calling them stupid. I'm saying stupidity is becoming too prominent in New Mombasa. Too many "UR MOM!!!111!!11!1" threads there.

Blame it on the release of Halo 2

Before Halo 2 came out I liked the place, one day after...well you know the story

My experiance was of little activity as everyone played. A few days later the question threads popped up and hell from there on. That brings us to now...

I agree with you for the most part. There are times when interesting threads are created, and it shouldn't be taken away from New Mombassa at all, but it is overwhelming with the amount of stupidity that goes on.

I, myself, try to help those out who are new, or do something wrong, but I don't do it a lot, so I guess that doesn't make me a 'forum cop'. >_>

I still think people are getting Forum Cop, Mod wannabe, and Helpful Member confused. But I can see why some people can get them confused, as it's sometimes a fine line between the three.

Hows about a little role play?
Lets say we see a post like this in New Mombasa:

Posted by:Eager new member
what do you guys think is going to be the new weapons in halo 3?

Now this kind of post is usually met with spam/flames, but when it's not, it's usually one of the three types of members who replies in their own unique way.

Posted by:"Mod Wannabe"
Posted by:Eager new member
what do you guys think is going to be the new weapons in halo 3?

Locked.

See what happened? The user replied to the thread only to cast judgement on it. This is probably a lot more annoying to see, as who are we members to decide what stays and what goes?

Scenario #2:

Posted by:"Forum Cop"
Posted by:Eager new member
what do you guys think is going to be the new weapons in halo 3?

This should go Here

Now this is a little more accepted than a "Mod wannabe" response, as the user is trying to help. Providing a link for a new member who doesn't even notice the box of links is a good gesture, but if it's a member who knows where the stuff is, links aren't necessary, and may be seen as patronizing the thread creator in question. That's why it's such a delicate thing- if you're going to do it, do it right (and try not to come off as cocky or anything like that.)

Scenario #3:

Posted by:"Helpful member"
Posted by:Eager new member
what do you guys think is going to be the new weapons in halo 3?

Well, I'm glad to see the Battle rifle returning. And they need to balance the sword a bit. What do you think? Oh, and this may be a little better suited for the Halo 3 forum, hopefully a mod will move it.

Here's what a "Helpful Member" will do. They're interacting with said user, and attempting to be of assisstance along the way. Now, he does do a little Forum copping, as seen by him pointing out to the Halo 3 forum. But his intention is to contribute to thread, then try to aid the user in getting to know what goes where.

There's a fine line with this stuff. Sometimes one will spill over to the other, but it's more or less clear to define these members who attempt to "better" the Forum.

I know it's the mod's job to clean up and whatnot, and I'm sure they enjoy pointing people in the right direction and making the typical new member's experience all the more worth while. But they aren't always there to make sure stuff like this is handled. That's why we have members who try to aid when they can, or direct people in the right direction for future notice.

It's just that it's difficult to tell when the situation calls for it sometimes.

My suggestion... dont correct anyone. If you dont correct anyone they cant call you a forum cop, and there will be nobody interacting with them... with no interaction they will get bored and leave

I'm not going to change just to please them. Sorry, I'm not a bendy-straw. I do what I please, and people will accept me for who I am.

The moderating staff have repeatedly stated that you should PM one of them instead of correcting the user yourself. Your inability to follow the mods directions is what led to this. Informing a new member of a rule is one thing, but constantly "correcting" people just tells everyone that you are a pretentious, know-it-all forum cop and they act accordingly.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but the answer just seems really obvious to me. Its like going to the doctor and saying, "Hey doc, its hurts when I repeatedly punch myself in the face" The doctor would tell you to stop punching yourself in the face. Only in this instance, you make it clear you're not going to change for anyone, so it looks like a future of punching yourself in the face.

On side note, Halo 2 has been out for more than 2 years. You ever think that the flow of new topics and free thought might eventually peter out?

Helping people=good

Forum copping=bad

Forum copping in essence is supposed to be a good thing. In fact, it was considered the art of contributing at one point.

But I think it all came spiraling down when people would grossly overdo it. That's why the title "Forum Cop" has such a negative connotation.

You have guys like Mabian (who considers himself a Forum cop) who do it right. He always makes sure the user he's helping feels comfortable, and provides an ample explanation without patronizing the user at all.

But then there are people who reply to threads just to say "This thread is off topic, Locked."

And that, frankly, is very very inappropiate for members to say, especially when they're wrong. That's when the title "Forum Cop" became a more negative term- the people who didn't do it right pretty much changed the way the term is used.

It's a very difficult concept to peg down. Just when I think I have it figured out, someone throws a wrench into the equation :-/

Wow, good post Ice. You normally see the people going around like "3...2...1..."

Those are the most annoying, help the poor guy out!

Indeed. People need to be warned of such actions, or else they'll just keep doing it.

I'm gonna be extremely straightforward. I don't like you. And clearly, there's an entire group of people out there that don't like you. I know you have good intentions, but it will just get you flamed. Don't post in New Mombasa anymore.

ur a mod wannbe lol

Iceman is the best Bungie member here. Listen to him.
While I have nothing at all against Iceman, I dislike the assertion that any one member can be called "the best".

As a member who's been here long enough to remember the madness of 8/24, I have to say that New Mombasa has certainly seen worse times. It's bad now, but that doesn't mean it won't get better. Have patience and endure.

SPQB et cetera.

Actually, This member is the best :-)

I'm in no way shape or form the best. I guess I just like you guys too much to want to flame any of you, LoL

And though I wasn't here for it, I could only imagine what this place was like when you Ninjas lacked banning tools.

Well........thanks to Search Bar, I was able to see. But being there at the time? That must have been utter hell with people like "You know who" (a certain pokemon) running around, LoL

I saw that a mile off. :P

Anyway, I can't moan at what the Mods do. They're pretty efficient if you maintain a grasp of just how out-numbered they are. They've been selected so there are people from around the world for both equality (that must have been a reason, too) and so they're able to cover almost 24 hours a day... technically.

Very well, you didn't call them stupid. But you were very obviously angry at them, and I wouldn't be surprised if you still are. I am simply trying to figure out what the entire episode with the regulars means if they are not part of the stupidity. In fact, you seemed almost surprised about the reactions to your behavior in your original post.

I will not give in to you...I will not submit...

It is like Recon told me a long time ago...don't add gas to a fire. You don't need to pick out every flaw someone makes and tell them about it. You don't need to go into a spam thread and say "Hey this is spam! You're breaking the rules!" All you need to do is contact a moderator to take care of it.
