Its not a grenade. Even though it looks similar to a grenade its different. The simplified definition of grenade is "small hand-held explosive device." Of course it expands to be more specific, but it excludes the shield device. It is more likely a portable shield hand-held generator, or as I like to call it, PSHG. It is most likely based on a maximum amount of energy it can withstand (all explosions are forms of energy, no matter what properties) before failing, a timer (before it runs out of power) or a combination of both.

Its a pretty strong shield if it can withstand wraith fire.

sorry I know thats obvious..

Remember, it failed. Thats why it collapsed. The Chief was in a bracing position in case the shield failed so that he wouldn't take the whole explosion to one point on his body. It held out long enough for the Wraith fire to disperse. He most likely didn't deactivate it since he threw it on the ground and dint touch it again after (unless he hit it when running). Its always possible its UNSC technology and he deactivated it him self through a remote link to his suit.

We’re looking back laughing because they called us crazy, but we took that chance on that feeling, living for the moment, we were spinning in. Maybe we were a lot of things, but we weren't crazy.

Um yes that shield is from the "grenade". Obviously he wouldn't throw a grenade down in front of him. That shield might be usuable in the game because our energy shields in game play are supposed to be a bit weaker I heard. It will help resist rocket damage and such.

I don't think it failed. It just deactivated after the blow, like it is supposed to. And I doubt he was in that stance to "brace himself" That shot would have most likely killed him if it had hit him dead on like it did...or if the shield had failed.

That would make multi-player pointless. Every time you fire at someone with the shield they will just put it up and kill you after it drains and your low on ammo. I think they should just have it in single player, or just use it during the cut scenes.

Read this: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=765343

Frankie sums up some stuff about the shield, wraths and kids in the beginning.

How do you know if its suppose to deactivate right after a blow?

I think it failed an he was hit by a small part of the wraith fire.

Not necessarily. Explosions are pure energy, and because of that, like energy, they easily dissipate. If it hit the top of his head, he would take the full blast on one point and it would be enough to take out a tank. However, in that position, above the ground, the energy would dissipate off his body and at the most send him into a coma.

@Slycer: Yeah I see.

@Dark: Well, like a sticky grenade dissapates after being stuck to something right? Well, in MY opinion, the shield will most likely deactivate after being struck. Who would want to stay inside the shield anyway? Unless there is an option to turn it off.

Again, these are just guesses on what might happen in Halo 3. No one knows what Bungie has up their sleeves lol.

Snipers would love to stay in that shield. "Hello I'm a sniper, I'm going to shoot you in the head. You cant kill me because my shield has to be turned off by me!"

Also, it may be similar to the bullet doors, where only lethal projectiles and plasma are stopped by it.

Does anyone know why the warthog wheel was still spinning behind mc when hes trying to stand up?
Do you think that he was flown out of the hog by wraith fire?

When he gets up, he's experiencing shell shock. This is normally caused by artillery or tank shells exploding close to someone. The Wraith is a Covenant hybrid of artillery and tank, and the plasma mortar is their equivalent to a high-explosive shell. Now, as you can see, the assault rifle is lying nearby. Also the warthog is on its side and scorched with the wheel spinning.

Now, if we put this information together, we can draw the logical conclusion that the chief was driving the warthog and a wraith mortar exploded nearby. This flipped the warthog onto its side, ejecting the Chief and his assault rifle. The assault rifle was probably in the clamp between the seats and came loose in the explosion. When the Chief hit the ground, or perhaps before, his helmet came off. He then proceeds to re-attach his helmet onto the suits neck seal, and pick up his assault rifle. Que mortars in the sky.

Yeah, he was blasted out of the warthog by something, not sure what though. That was why he was having the flashback and then got up off the ground. That is also why his helmet came off. At least this is what I think lol.

The warthog wheel is still spinning probably because it just happened, and just flipped over.

@KillX: God I hate snipers sometimes. I HOPE that shield isn't in multiplayer. And if it is, hopefully there is something about it that doesn't make you able to use it all the time.

EDIT: Damn you, always get your posts in before me lol

I am a lifeless fan boy. I sit at home doing homework and posting in forums.
However, this is quiet helpful for me, it has helped me hone and refine my technical skills and I am almost ready to wire a high end PC graphics card, minus software drivers. Thats my partners job for his software course. I've also learned alot and can easily draw up the conclusions I have posted here.

If it is in multi-player they should have it where 1 sniper shot, 2 BR burst, or a full clip on an assault rifle will break it so you can at least have a chance at killing the guy with it. Then again, even 1-2 seconds is enough time to get 1 good sniper shot off and kill from inside the shield.

Wait, what if no gunfire could go through at all, so you just got an extra few seconds for your shield to recharge.- that would work right?

Not a full AR clip. Think about it, you empty your clip to break their shield, they have a full clip. You can reload, or switch weapons, either way theres about a 4 second period you cant shoot. In that time the now shield less foe can kill you.

ok, then not a full clip, but does the concept sound good?, I mean like if you did it any other way (ex, had the shield activate for longer) then the gameplay would be kinda pointless because the guy with the shield generator could pwn.

Its a good concept, but it would definitely need some tweaking. Plus, Bungie probably wont see this. They have more important things to do than reading every thread they find. And, I bet they though of it already.

  • 12.05.2006 6:53 PM PDT

From what I saw during that commercial. That was no warthog it was a buggie that was tanking out pre-release of Halo 2 and is now being put back into for the third one. Also if you listen closely after chief puts the helmet back on you can hear a feignt voice saying" Chief Leave" and what I am thinking it is Cortana. That is basically what I got during that clip.

KillX_ I Agree, Bungie will not read 29 pages worth of forum. Unless they have that kinda time on their hands, and if they did I would start complaining and say "get back to working on Halo 3"

okie dokie, this is wht i think of the sheild... the shield in temporary, such as, u throw it down and it either last 4 a few seconds or the shields limit is reached and it cuts out, probably like a rocket sniper, sniper shot, or grenade would do the trick. also, the shields r probably 1 time uses. like, u carry a couple on u at a time, and u either run out or u can pick them up throughout the map. MC threw that thing at the ground pretty hard and it looked like he had no intension of picking it up or using it again. the shield would b very cheap if they were infinitely reuseabale, unless they had a very long recharge time. so the shield will save ya from a couple deadly shots, but it wont save u 4ever
