I just started browsing these here forums, and I've got to say: wow. There are a lot of users. And a lot of posts. Pages upon pages. I don't believe the current forum setup is an efficient way to manage it. Posts get lost too quickly, threads disappear in a matter of minutes, and I have no idea where I left off on one popular topic to come back to it later, after fifty-some posts have been added.

This may have even been brought up before, but the search function only allows searching the entire forums at once - which isn't really helpful. No more so then scanning through the forum pages themselves to look for whatever it is I'm looking for.

I would like to offer up the vBulletin format as a solution, if it's feasible. With many more sub-categories. Giving Halo 3 it's own forum with no sub-categories (say, one for weapons, one for maps, one for the campaign, etc...) is...tough to push through. And I'd like to contribute!

Anyway, the reason why I propose vBulletin (or something similiar): the search function allows for specific sub-category searches, greatly cutting down the number of posts needing to be sifted through. Not only that, but you can set your filter for thread titles or just anywhere in the post - also useful.

Also, probably via cookie, it allows you to hop right back into a thread from where you left off ('go to first new post'). These two are my big...comforts with forum surfing.

Ultimately, my first reaction when I got here: "There's thousands of users and little organization. I'm lost."

My thoughts. Sorry if someone already said the same! I looked though at least five pages and tried the search, but it still left me with over half a dozen pages.

vBulletin, and other forums like it, cannot compensate with the amount of traffic (2+ million members) that Bungie.net gets.

I'd say a member is someone who contributes to the community by posting etc. Bungie.net does not have 2 million members. Anways, I think the forums are great just the way they are. If you want to keep a thread in check, bookmark it. If you wish to escape the chaos of the forums, just join some groups that interest you.

Use the Bookmark feature to keep track of whatever threads you want to follow. Its a great tool. You can come back days later and find a thread easily, long since pushed pages back, to check old responses. :)

I had a feeling this was the case.

I've already made pretty good use of the bookmark feature - definitely helpful for keeping track of threads, though it isn't any good for keeping track of posts (if I wanted to see if anyone replied to something I posted, for example).

Also, is the quote button supposed to quote the whole post, or just highlighted text? I could've sworn it was the latter, though I may be confusing that with some other forum I use (all of which are powered by vBulletin...so I'm probably biased).

You'll get used to it eventually (I hope.)

You have some good thoughts though. But the pace of this forum is rather quick at time, but you'll adjust.

I find that the pace of some forums (H3) is very fast, but that of others (here in the Septagon, for instance) threads can stay on page one with no replies for weeks. =)

Well, thanks for the information. After playing Halo 2 Live for a couple years, I'm pleasantly surprised there are...how do I say it nicely...not jerks.

I think I'll go throw some thoughts into the vast 'weapon ideas' thread just to see if I can find them again days later, ha ha.

The main problem with these forums is the visual layout. In a few very specific ways, this forum does not use its available screen real estate efficiently.

That will eventually change. And I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Don't pander to him Achronos. He will drink the kool-aid and he will like it.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Does this mean smaller text? i likje the text at the moment as it's a good size i can read. I have bad eye-sight and can't really read text much smaller than this without straighning my eyes. Will there be an option to pick background colours too? If the new layout is brighter it also strains my eyes, that's why i avoid the xbox forums. (at least those forums aren't 'pure' white)

Ctrl + the scroll wheel changes the size, so you know. You can change it like that on every website I believe.

Note that that makes the lettering patheticaly(sp?) tiny and defeats the purpose of making it more readable.
On a side note, I love IE7 for that, the wee tab in the bottom right, emails are so easier to read now :D

Good to know. I always wondered why half my display was used firing off black and white pixels with no information and if that would ever be fixed.

I do have to say though that this layout i do like just because it is a little different from other fourms and i do not like say the Gears OF War or some other of the gaming websites

The Joyeuse IP Formula

Posted by: Pimp Juice
I seriously doubt that we have more than 2,000 unique active users. That being the case, vBulletin would work rather well. Another benifit of vBulletin is their IP bans, something that I dont think these forums have. Also vBulletin, as was previously stated, allows for the creation of sub forums and regular forums. This allows the moderators on vBulletin or more efficiently control the forums. On top of that, the sub forums can be used as groups currently are.

We use IP bans. But only if absolutly nessecary.
In my opinon, the vBulletin boards and others like it seems very cluttered. Our Ninjas (moderators) moderate all of the forums. (Maybe exept for the gallery, news, and voting booth)
