Thought I would resurrect this thread. E3 has come and gone and from what I learned from the show, 10 players played CTF on the Zanzibar level using 10 Xboxs. If it was set up as a LAN, which it most likely was, then more than 4 Xboxs on a LAN is possible. However, it has yet to be determined if split-screen will still be supported with a higher number of Xboxs linked together. Bungie please let us know if 16 players will be able to set up a LAN on 8 Xboxs and tvs and play 2 per box. If anybody else out there desires this - please let Bungie know it!

Ok, I have not been able to find this information. Will Halo2 allow 4 player split screen multiplayer on one xbox like Halo? Im not talking about Xbox Live, or Multiple Xboxes connected together. How many multiplayers can play on one non networked Xbox? I am looking for fact only, where is this information at excatly? The BestBuy site lists the game as "For 1 player or multiplayer support over LAN or Internet". This would mean to me that it is going the way of Rainbow Six 3. The bestbuy info on Halo says "For 1 to 4 players". Hopefully, this is an error in the part of BestBuy. So again, how many people can play on 1 non networked xbox, and where is this factual information?? Thanks all!

I sure hope that what XBLSilverDragon posted is not true. I doubt that they will completely do away with split-screen. That would kill the game. There is a reason many of us still get together and play Halo. It's not because of Xbox Live either. The ability to LAN 4 Xboxs and put up to 4 players on each is what has given the game such replayabilty. Halo LANs with a bunch of friends is the greatest thing! Let's hope they make it even better by allowing us to spread out over more than 4 Xboxs for the years to come.

This thread can die. It's been confirmed that you can have up to 16 xboxes on a LAN, in whatever player configuration your little heart desires, splitscreen or full screen.

Seriously, the FAQ was updated today. Go read it, and then avoid posting pointless stuff. Maybe this thread was started before it was posted, but now you know....and knowing is half the battle.

the faq states "Each player can use an individual box in LAN games (up to 16 boxes)"
so if each player (singular) can use an individual xbox, that means up to 16 people can play on up to 16 xboxs.

Alright, a couple of you have missed the point of this thread - specifically mikeman445 and jharbst.
Regarding jharbst: yes, this thread was created long before the recent update to the FAQ.
Regarding mikeman445: yes, you are right that you can LAN up to 16 Xboxs - I too stated this before in an earlier post. However, the FAQ does not mention anything about support of split-screen on a LAN. So, no, it has not been established yet and this thread need not die.

This thread is about letting Bungie know, that we the fans, want to be able to LAN more than 4 Xboxs (which has recently been determined - up to 16) while still supporting SPLIT-SCREEN. I don't think many of us would be able to gather 16 televisions under one roof, but 5, 6, 7 or 8 is a possibilty. We want to be able to play 2 players per screen on a LAN. I don't need a full 36" screen, but I hate to divide that screen into 4. Yet, 4 players have plenty of room on a 65" rear projection set. We want that kind of versatility.

So... Bungie please let us now know if split-screen will still be an option especially when on a 6, 8 or 10 Xbox LAN. Until then - we will keep requesting it and keep this thread alive!

The LAN capacity is now 16 if you have read any of the info from E3 2004.
The LIVE number is still up for debate but is currently at 16.

Some of you need to read the previous post in this thread before you post your comments. The post before this one by Abolitionofman wrote - "The LAN capacity is now 16 if you have read any of the info from E3 2004." If he had read the post directly ahead of his he would know that I already stated that. Nobody is debating that 16 players will be able to play on a LAN and we all now know that a LAN can be comprised of 16 Xboxs. WE DON"T YET KNOW IF SPLIT-SCREEN WILL STILL BE SUPPORTED ON A LARGE LAN. So many other FPS's on the Xbox allow up to 16 Xboxs on a LAN, such as Counter Strike, Castle Wolfenstein, Soldier of Fortune, Rainbow SIx 3, etc... but, are only 1 player per screen - NO SPLIT-SCREEN! I hope Halo 2 does not go the same route. Being able to get 16 players on 8 Xboxs/tvs would be ideal to me.

I guess I’ll put my two cents in, but I think I’m so far back most people will probably skip this.

Star wars battlefront will have 16 players on live, and 32 on Lan. I mention this only as proof that is it is possible for 8 Xbox's to run together, but it would seem lag is very likely. I purpose a compromise for 24 players. 32 seems almost like too much, you would have to rent out a community center for the night and bring in couches or something to have enough room. I guess if you can get enough people together, more power to ya.

I think something everyone is forgetting is the map sizes. I don’t think even blood gulch could handle 24 players. I do believe that if Bungie wanted 24 players, they would have gotten a start on it a while ago, because they would need extremely large maps with multiple paths to make the experience worthwhile. and keep your "I w1ll pwn 4ll teh Fa-blam!-zors w1t my G4m3Shark-L1ke SKILLZ" comments to yourself. So basically, don’t hold you breath.

At this point, it has been confirmed 16 Xboxs can be hooked up both by the E3 and several posts have astutley pointed out. Are you guys wanting maybe 8 Xboxs, each with split screen? That sounds like an excellent idea. One xbox per player seems like a poor compromise, simply because the vast majority of players don’t have enough room to facilitate all the equipment necessary. The 16 people/Xbox/Tv thing should still be included as a treat for the people that have such a Shaq-sized house, but for the rest of us, I hope bungie makes it an accessible gaming experience. Something to think about: From what I remember, all the games that need 1 player per xbox are pc ports. I suspect that taking a pc game and making it split screen would require a lot more work than we think, and the developers may have deemed it cost prohibitive.

Another idea keep in mind is maybe one xbox per screen is necessary for the raw computing power. Maybe the game is so much bigger, and so much more is going on, that all the xbox's are needed to process everything going on. I’m not saying this is true, and I really don’t know much about networking or hardware, this is just a theory. Somehow I don’t think this is the case though. destructible environments and vehicles couldn’t have taxed the xbox that much.

Summary: it is possible for up to 32 player lans that I know of. It has probably already been decided how many players there will be, and no matter how much we gripe, it is unlikely to change. 1 xbox per player is too prohibitive for Lans, but if it is indeed a hardware issue that cannot be resolved, we can learn to live with it, but this is probably not the case. Lastly, I personally with for 24 players on a few Uber huge maps, sharing at least 2 people per box.

PS

As far as Xbox live goes, I don’t think its only for nasty little grease nerds. I myself view it as a Lan-lite. I love Lans. the social experience coupled with Halo makes for one special party. However, Lans are also a pain in the ass. Getting a place, getting all the people, and the special few who must bring equipment, all adds up to one big headache. Live allows a Lan experience without the migraine, and you can do it every night of the week if you are so inclined. I myself plan to use live to keep my skills sharp against all the amazingly good people on Live. I also think Live is a good way to compare yourself against a more universal standard of measurement. I do wish their was some age limit to Live though. I’m really hoping my Live Halo isn’t ruined by a bunch of 10 year old pansy-assed snipers. My dream is the implementation of a credit system, something akin to the ebay rating system, so we could blacklist the little -blam!-s. I could block out people that don’t play well with others, especially Tkers. At the same time, they could promote eachother and knock us people that play for fun and winning equally, so maybe this isn’t the best idea.

CitizenKane brought up a great point regarding PC/Xbox games. The fact that most, if not all, only allow 1 player per Xbox is because it would be too much work and money to redesign the PC game to allow split-screen on a console. With that in mind perhaps the best will happen - LAN support for at least 16 players on 1-16 Xboxs with splitscreen support for at least 2 per screen, hopefully up to 4.

Knowing that you will be able to LAN 16 Xboxs makes me worry that they are doing away with split-screen. Perhaps split-screen will be possible when playing multiplayer on 1 Xbox, and maybe on a small LAN like 4 Xboxs, just like the first Halo, but I fear that after that it will be only 1 player on 1 Xbox. If this is the case it will be a shame, especially if there is no split-screen support for a LAN or Live whatsoever. Too many other Xbox games go this route, making it too difficult to get a LAN together when every player needs their own Xbox and a tv. Split-screen is SOOOO... important!

The one thing I wish for more than anything else surrounding Halo 2 is the ability to LAN more than 4 Xboxs. Friends and I still play Halo on a weekly basis and do so on a 4 Xbox LAN. Most of us prefer playing on direct-view televisions for the bright and sharp pictures they provide. We prefer 2 players per screen for a nice wide and uncramped view and only 2 per screen helps keep the game running smooth. However, that limits the game to 8 players. There would be nothing greater if Halo 2 allowed 5, 6 or even 8 Xboxs to be linked WHILE STILL SUPPORTING SPLIT-SCREEN, like Crimson Skies. Xbox Live is great but just doesn't compare in fun to a group of friends under one roof on a LAN!

-PLEASE HEAR US ON THIS BUNGIE.

Awesome idea about more than 4 xboxes. Would probably create a lot of lag. Taht would be problematic.

From what has been presented, there will be only 16 players, however, you can split screan up to 16 x-boxes...They may change this, but from what they have said, only 16 players, and split screaning on all the x-boxes you use (because some people could not afford to have a lot of x-boxes)... don't quote me, but i'm just going on what i've seen/heard from official places... imay have mis-interpreted it though

Regarding REprpEzekiel Comments above: Lag is not really an issue with a LAN, whether there be 4 Xboxs or 16 Xboxs connected. Lag is something that happens when going online through a server with people spread across great distances. The greatest factor in lag time would probably be each individual's broadband service provider. Individuals with slower connections can cause lag for everyone else in the game. Which is why Xbox Live is so great, unlike Sony's service which allows for dial-up. A LAN is a Local Area Network. No server, no long distance ... nothing but each console connected to each other - thus no lag! Frame rate drop is another issue, which can seem like lag. This happens with the first Halo when you get a large LAN of 16 players together, cramming 4 players on each console and all hell breaks out on a map - too much going on that the processor has a hard time computing, bogging down.

As for Elazul comments: WHO? and WHERE? are these "official places" that you claim have said that up to 16 Xboxs can be connected while still allowing split-screen???

Where did you (Elazul) hear that up to 16 Xboxes can be linked and still support split-screen??? Share those "OFFICIAL PLACES" with the rest of us. For this is what we want to know! That is what this thread is about - letting Bungie know that we greatly desire this and hoping they answer us with a YES!
