It's easy to see why I know he pirated the game. First thing, he said he installed Halo with just adding random numbers in the CD Key boxes. Meaning he probably got a generic one off a website. Now that will let you run the game, but not play multiplayer, because the game checks to see if it's valid.
Secondly, if he bought the game legally, then it would have come with a valid CD Key. Even if he bought it secondhand the CD Key would most likely work, unless the original owner was still playing the game with a cracked .Exe.
So it is reasonably safe to infer that this kid downloaded the game off the internet, and now he doesn't know what to do with it.
