When you get one it comes with Itunes... you need Windows XP to run it, and it does all the work for you... it takes mp3's, cd tracks, etc. all you have to do is open them and they're converted to whatever it needs to put them on.

iPods work with the following audio file formats:

AAC (16 to 320 Kbps)
MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps)
MP3 VBR
Apple Lossless
WAV
AIFF
Audible

You will probably want to use AAC instead of mp3 anyway, since it has a smaller file-size and better quality. It's basically the industry standard audio compression format developed by Dolby. WMA is bull-blam!-.

I herd the guy Dan on The Screen Savers talking about AAC. I don't think that I will bother with it if it doesn't make that much of a difference. So how would it work? Taking a mp3 file and putting it on the ipod.

Ok you Obviously dont have an ipod then.

Anyway you can definitely put MP3's on a ipod. Just go to the ipod website (www.apple.com/itunes) it will tell you what you can and cant put on it. I'd say about 80% of the music on mine is MP3 files. I wanna convert them all to AAC. That way i can crame in a bit more music.

Also its easier then scratching your butt to put music on it. Even if you do use Windows. Im a mac user so it work flawlessly with my ibook. But dont fear it will also work flawlessly with windows unless maybe if your an idiot and dont know how to plug in a simple wire.

Hey if i was you i would go ahead and download itunes now. That way you learn how to use it before you get an ipod. Itunes is awsome plus its free and you can burn music at your burners top speed with out paying for an extra fee.

Good luck and happy ipoding.
