Oh guys, play nice. He's not as old as us, remember, people from all ages play Halo cause it's a fun game to just bust some caps off in yo enemy's ass, whilst chillin with da homies.

Pretty much, this is how I'd set it up:

vsync off with ATI Radeon 9600 PRO or Nvidia's FX5700.

VSYNC on with ATI Radeon 9800 PRO or Nvidia's FX5900.

Anything beefier? VSYNC on, since you'll still get great framerates, and no chance of screen tearing. Of course, this will vary game-to-game. Cause HaloPC's older and not as demanding as newer games (still pretty demanding though since it runs like junk compared to properly optimized games).

[EDIT1]
Btw, guys, I think what Brandon was trying to get at, was that it doesn't really matter all too much what setting you have the refresh rate at, as long as you pwn with it. ;)

hey guys, WELL, this is from a "seasoned" player.

30 frames per second is a joke. console TV gaming is extremely limited. i know from my own experience that i can percieve much, much more then 30 frames per second, ive seen people react faster then 1/30 a second which would mean 1 frame. good luck with that.

vsync will keep up with your monitor, from personal experience 60 cycles per second (hertz) is still a noticable decline in performance for those that are running a flat-panel/LCD/plasma display. my advice is TURN VSYNC OFF FOR THIS. horizontal tearing IS NOT BAD. it lets you move less "restrictedly" then with vsync on. and for those of you that have monitors that can handle refresh rates of higher then 75 cycles per second (hertz) vsync will have a very slight affect on you.

basically.

30fps will limit you. (even if you're running a p.o.s. vid card, odds are it can get more then this....)
vsync will limit you. (to your monitor)

Well, I would have thought playing at 30fps for long periods of time would make your eyes strain a bit. Or bleed, but that's for playing *far* too long.

vsync is your best option
i think 30 fps is a bit slow for an fps i think.

*sigh*.

VSYNC caps your software FPS at your monitor's refresh rate. The game will not attempt to generate any more frames than the game can display, this makes the game more efficient.

Removing VSYNC means the software is free to generate as many frames as it likes, but the monitor will not display any more than its refresh rate will allow, as this is physically impossible. It is slightly less efficient, but with interpolation and other speshul stuff, can make the game smoother.

Capping it at 30fps is to make it more efficient than VSYNC, as your eye can only see 28.5 fps or something, so the logic is, "why waste processing time on extra frames?"

It's as simple as that. For smoothest looking performance, don't cap anything, but for best performance, cap it at 30 (assuming its a cap on generation and not just display). But you all run on neanderthal PCs, so i'd recommend 30fps.

I like No VSYNC, its good for when your recording, plus its always good to have a few extra frames, then not enough.
I also need some help.
I overclocked my Radeon 9250 and now I get a playable number of frames, about 40 on average on default shaders. For some reason though it takes a big hit when ever I'm looking at a teleporter or when the plasma pistol over heats. Any one know a way to stop that, that doesn't involve disabling shaders.
Also does anyone know how much you can overclock a Radeon 9250. Right now its at 280, but I heard people say it could go well past 300, but ATI Tool won't let it get past 280. Any ideas?

You want a consistent framerate in-game; otherwise, you won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn. If your computer cannot _consistently_ produce a framerate that's equal to your refresh rate, don't use VSYNC. If you can't even stay above 30, you can always just suck like me.

I have VSYNC on my ATi READON 9550, i put chrome likes graphics in, Pixel shaders 2.0, high settings, its really cool and i get 60 FPS all the time. VSYNC is alot smoother, but 30 FPS forces the game to run at it at all times, i didnt really like it, because sometimes my fps went to four.......

Vsync seems like a good option, but I'm suprised that not very many people (if any) mentioned that vsync can cause mouse lag. You're control input is delayed by a fraction of a second, which is enough to throw your gameplay way off.

No-Vsync just causes tearing. It also doesn't cause mouse lag like Vsync does.

However, both of the vsync options cause the camera to run smoother than the actual objects. If you get in a vehicle, you still see the movement at 30fps unless you start moving the camera. It can cause some weird "stuttering" of moving objects such as vehicles, and even other players.

The movement stuttering issue is one of the only reasons you'd wanna enable the "30-FPS cap". This mode however, can cause mouse lag just like vsync.

Let's just face it. It's a dilemma between the three modes.
