I find myself using both of these weapons for the majority of the game.

Which one do you prefer to use more often?

Site reasons for your decision.

Pistol. You can always work on your pistol. It's the key to multiplayer so practice doesn't hurt.

But the noise the AR makes is just spot on. So much fun to hose the room down...

I know what you mean, the Assault Rifle just feels so perfect. I think that will always be the weapon everyone first thinks about when they think of Halo.

pistol, you can use it any situation really. but the AR is just great to use, even if it isn't super effective. i used to love running up on someone and just hosing them and then punching them at the last second.

I tend to use both in the Campaign frequently, however in multiplayer you would be retarded to choose the assault rifle over a shotgun, sniper rifle, or a rocket launcher. I use the pistol way more because- well it's quite obvious. It's accurate, has a 2X scope, can kill people in three shots, what's not to love?

i've never once stated it was a fair weapon, but it's there and i use it in self defense.

LOL! And the assault rifle isn't?

  • 12.04.2006 4:04 PM PDT

The pistol is better than the assault rifle over all, but the AR still has some advantages. At close ranges it is clearly the better weapon. A handful of rounds from the AR coupled with a Double Melee is an easy kill against someone with a pistol. The AR is also easier to melee with that the pistol because it has a wider lateral range at which you can hit them. Meaning you can have your cross hair further away from the enemy that you can with the pistol and still get a hit.

The pistol is the most horrible thing about the first Halo. It is a complete load of bull-blam!- that a sidearm would be a better choice to use than your primary weapon.

Also I feel like a noob whenever I have the pistol.

It's just a God damned cosmetic thing. Yeah, yeah, I know a pistol is supposed to be a side-arm, but it's not that big of a deal. The assault rifle became the backup weapon and the pistol became the primary firearm. Just because it doesn't take the role that it should doesn't mean you should hate it.

I feel like a noob whenever I don't have a pistol.

The thing is though is that that doesn't matter in the slightest, what with being a sci-fi video game. Who told you it was a sidearm anyway?

Appropriate-looking or not, overpowered or not, it made the game what it was. To be honest I think the pistol was perfect; it's just that the other weapons could have used a boost to bring them into line.

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

i hate superlaserpistol. thats why i use assaultrifle, shotgun, sniper, plasmarifle and needler. though assaultrifle isnt useable on legendary. but i wont ever use that boring, killing stupid pistol, assault creates halo feeling

A handgun is a sideearm because it's designed to be used one handed in case you're main weapon runs out of ammo or breaks. I'll agree in the Halo universe nothing short of a .50 calibre pistol would suffice as a backup weapon, but your assault rifle should be more powerful than your pistol.

So pretty much, if the Pistol had a different skin you wouldn't care? The real Halo fans don't care what skin the gun has, only what the gameplay is like. If the Halo 1 pistol looked like a 12 sided double dildo when you were holding it, I would still like the game more than any other game.

Why the pistol of course, it is a powerful weapon you can really rely on. The AR is simply a slightly more accurate SMG that's long ranged.

Despite that factor for the AR, it is pretty good for mowing down infection forms.

Why write a witty signature here when u could waste peoples time with this stupid sentence.

Assault Rifle NO -blam!-! it has the strength of a shotgun and the speed of an SMG! i think, i meen, i NO that a AR is better than a pistol! those who thot pistol is better, ur RETARDED!

And it's your connection that's slower than turtle sex.

In........................................................Out .

AR, though I use the pistol a helluva lot more online (HPC), as the circumstances usually require a pistol, I love the AR, I NEVER use the shotgun in halo unless there are no ARs around. The pistol is for medium range, the AR is for short range, and in some cases, medium range. AR + Sniper= Total pwnage

Also, While the pistol is a more effective killer, it is pretty hard to use at short range. And it's ammo runs out pretty fast. (trust me)

There you go with the should. That's only based on your preconceptions. Why shouldn't a huge shiny pistol with a scope that fires big explosive rounds be more powerful than a standard machine gun? It is a futuristic video game after all. I don't see why it bothers some people - why some people can't embrace the idiosyncracies of a game rather than find fault with things that don't gel with their worldview? Your problem with it is that you don't think it is normal, I ask you - why should it be normal?

It's not my fault I like stuff to make sense, you're probably one of those people who wonder why the Army doesn't use the Desert Eagle as it's sidearm.

Become the hunter.

Personally I think that they compliment each other nicely, in campaign on legendary. You can't use the pistol and expect to beat an elite very easily on legendary unless his shield is down, but it works great for grunts. The AR is superb for running up and filling the elites full of lead though. So they work well together.

Multiplayer is silly though. I mean, the cartridge used by the AR (7.62 x 51mm) is the same round fired out of the M-14, which is currently used as a light sniper. The MA5B would actually be way more accurate then the M6D. You can't expect a pistol round (even .50 cal) to be on par with a rifle cartridge like 7.62 x 51. It just doesn't happen.
