There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

It is fairly obvious to me that the reason that the forums went down for a couple hours tonight was due to the large amounts of hits to the site, and thread creation in the Halo 3 forum. This is rather unfortunate because I know that the Achronos is probably working overtime trying to compensate for the amount of bandwith that just got sucked down the drain by all the trolls in the Halo 3 forum.

It is just plain pathetic that there are almost 3 complete pages of "recent topic" threads in the Halo 3 forums, and I would say that 97% of them discuss the exact same stupid topics. Either the Beta Testing or the Halo 3 commercial. Where is Shishka when you need him? I was on last night when people thought that the Beta testing signup sheet was going to be posted, and people were making threads like crazy talking about "OMGORZ when does the Beta test sign up go up!!!!11eleven" Shishka put in a sticky saying if you made a thread about the release of the signup, you got a 2 week vacation from B.net. I for one, loved the idea! You know why, because it funneled people into basically 1 thread that was spared because people were afraid to post a new thread. This is the kind of fear we need to put into the trolls currently in the Halo 3 forum. If I have to see 1 more thread concerning your opinion of the commercial, when the entire front page is filled with threads exactly like yours, I will kick a puppy, and not just a puppy, a really really cute puppy!!

Mods, I'm begging you, start blacklisting some people, and lets try to gain control back of the forum. I mean, obviously all the people who are making new threads are spamming, because there is no other explaination for it.

Well I made a thread about it with a legitimate question, and I had not seen the post by Shiska.

I hope I don't get blacklisted.

which question, Beta or the commercial? Last night at around 11 pm PST, Shishka put up a sticky warning people about spamming the forum with Beta threads, and I saw a lot of people get blacklisted. Probably around 20. I think that should happen again now because of the commercial threads.

Beta. But my thread seems to have been deleted. But my question was answered.

I doubt I will get blacklisted if they didn't do it when they saw the thread. The reason I'm sure they didn't is because it was a good question, and one that I'm sure others were wondering as well.

yeah, believe me, if you were going to get blacklisted for a thread about Beta, it would have happened already. I just was happy to see people get blacklisted last night because it forced people to come into 1 thread and talk about Beta, instead of making dozens of new threads about it. They were all just afraid that if they made a new thread, they'd get blacklisted. I really really really think that something like that needs to happen in the Halo 3 forum right now because it is completely rediculous right now.

Honestly, if I could arrange a deal where I'd get blacklisted in exchange for all the commercial threads to go away, I'd take it gladly.

Well, I only see those threads in the Halo 3 forum. I try not to go in there after a big event like this happens.

The rediculous thing is that its spilling over into other forums. I was just in the flood, and the threads on the the bottom of the forum were all about the commertial and peoples theories.

Thank you Mr. Noge, this is exactly my point. It's not just a Halo 3 forum problem, because people realized that if they make a thread in that forum right now, it will get lost amongst the pages of other threads about the same topic. So what do they do? They go to a different forum where they shouldn't post, and the problem escalates.

Oh, and Recon, you're right, it probably is a short-lived problem, but it is something that I think can be tuned down by issuing a warning about creating new commercial threads will earn you a 2 week ban. I just think that doing nothing about these threads almost send a message of allowing spammers.

Uh....um....I was going to say something else...but my girlfriend just rattled some car keys infront of me!! :O

The Mods need a "Ban All" button.

It'll just ban everyone who posts in that topic...

Or a 'select from list', where they just check a box next to a name. That would be 1337.

Agreed. These thread and forum lackeys are too much. After the site went down and came back up, I expected to see all sorts of locked threads with blacklistings. But to no avail. If I could, I'd be handing out Spamtacular medals in there. So many posts about the same thing with only slight variations.

I think that so many in there believe that each thread that one makes is their thread, and not everybody's. That is why it is rampant. I hate to group them into a demographic, but honestly, so many of the posters in there are little kids with no respect for the forum rules. Check out the Bungie Halo 3-themed Daycare forum! My apologies to the respectable, younger members.

Oh well, I only crawl in that forum every once in a while anyway. Maybe my thoughts are incorrect, but I agree with the OP. A little more order could go a long way.

We give a little bit of lenience after something big like the announcement trailer or the commercial. Everyone's going to post their own threads, and if we ban everyone for it, we'll get a tirade of "BUNGIE ARE EVIL, BUNGIE BANS EVERYONE WITH AN OPINION", etc so on.

It all disappears within a few minutes anyway. Personally I don't care if it's past the second page.

LMAO the first 16 pages of the Halo 3 forum are all about the Commercial.

I don't know whether to smile or frown.

More like frown, so what if there was "theoretically" a thread in the Halo 3 forum that I wanted to talk about? Now I would have to go back 16 pages to find it again if I didn't bookmark it? I understand that the mods want to error on the side of being leinent, but I really think that letting this go to the point that it is sends the wrong message. But that's my personal view, and I'm just a Bill, sitting here on Capital Hill.

I know where you're coming from, B.B

That place has exploded. Make a thread there, anyone, and I garauntee it'll last maybe 4 minutes before sinking to page 2.

It's a madhouse in there. But it's kind of exciting. Amidst all the chaos and nonsense, you can kind of feel........I dunno......life in there. Definitely the most active I've ever seen a forum be. It's just shy of being a chat room!

Right, but that kind of chaos is frightening to me, because as it is all cheery and happy right now because they have a new "toy" to talk about, that's going to get old real quick, and people are still going to continue to post about it IMO. Plus, when Spring rolls around, and the 1st set of people who get Beta get it, and the vast majority don't, that chaos is going to turn ugly....very very ugly.

I guess what I am striving to get across is that for the vast majority of the threads currently in the Halo 3 forum are what should be considered spam. I mean, there is thread after thread talking about the same points with little or absolutely no difference. How can we lock and blacklist spammers, when we allow spam on certain occasions...like Thanksgiving O.o

Hey guys did you see the new Halo 3 commercial? IT WAS AWESOME!

Actually I haven't seen it yet. I don't watch television if I can help it. :(

Repeat threads are evil.

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

the "my xbox" button at xbox.com shut down too I hear, so I'm pretty sure that shows it wasn't all bungie.net's issue

Well, this stuff is inevitable. It'll happen when the beta comes out I suspect, it'll be so bad that many of us would shudder at the idea of going there when Halo 3 is released.

  • 12.05.2006 5:24 PM PDT

One can only ponder what will occur when the real, full game gets released. Bungie.net will literally melt before your eyes for the first week. At least.

Or, you could simply wait until something shiny gets their attention and they go back to talking about;

Oooooohhh... shiny "New Topic" button! Must... resist... clicking it!

Open All Links button = The end of the world for all b.net users!!

Anyway, yeah, it is really getting out of hand, but hey- it's the Halo 3 Forum! It'll probably die down soon, as others have said.
