Good point, everyone is aware of the covenant during the training sessions maybe. I recall the USNC keeping information away from people in the early parts of the war based on how badly they were getting their but kicks. I will review the Fall of Reach tonight, but I don't recall the Spartan IIs being given any information on the Covenant during their training.
Actually I recall that they were still dealing with Human insurgants (don't recall the name of that Asteroid base they destroyed), but I recall quite a number of human to human encounters. Remember, for a long time no one survived any attacks by the Covenant, they would get glassed. If I recall correctly, commander Keys was the first to even engage a Covenant attack group an win (God bless him).
Therefore I can assume that Chief got knocked out, by that Wraith mortor (he's been knocked out at least once in each game, 1. Escaping the pillar of Autumn, 2. Landing in New Mombosa. And he had a flashback to his youth. The voice you hear comes from the Right Back speaker channel - I stood right next to mine, You hear the Boy say, Time to go and that's when he is coming to.
The Overshield grenade, must be UNSC issued - Covenant are not innovative so they do not have new technology, they simply know how to create and repair the weapons left to them by the Forerunners. Mastes chiefs shield system was developed after they got a hold of an Elites shield Generator. Which makes full body shielding. This is obviously a take on the ?jackal arm Shield.
They are Brutes ok, ok, but I can guranatee you 2 things, we will see a new enemy type in this one and there will be 4 way war going on here. check this out:
Covenant civil war:
Elites, Grunts and Hunters vs Brutes Drones and something NEW.
Humans vs Covenant and Covenant Defectors
Flood vs Everybody with Flesh.
Considering that in Halo2 the only way to take a Brute down in good fashion was to shoot him in the head, what do you have to do to take town a fully armored Brute?
