One thing I really loved about Marathon and one of the elements that made it rock was the philosophy. For example the terminals on freedom in the level Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap. Would post it but it is long. It is these types of side story items that added new dimensions to the game.

You could read it here if interested.

Cronin's Law----The New Flood Drinking Game

So true... Games now just don't have that. games then didn't even have that. Gotta love it.

It's a real pity. Nowadays, people just look for the 'thrill' of the kill. That's how games like 'manhunt', which are sick and twisted, manage to gain support. They feed off of a public that has the attention span of a flea, albiet a pious one.

Now, all people seem to care about is the spurt of blood as you knife someone, the sight of death and destruction, and all of that sicko crap. Seriously. What have happened to the good ol' days where games were about telling a story? You know, when your goal was to fight your way through a Pfhor garrison, to talk to a self-aware circuit board called Thoth? then fighting your way back, to learn about an intense battle going on in space? One which you never saw, nor heard, but was amazing nonetheless?

Now it's just about entertaining someone long enough to get them to buy a crappy game.
That's why I love Marathon, and hate Doom. There was no plot at all in Doom. I had to read the strategy guide to even figure out what was going on.

I hope that Bungie tries to make more 'plot-oriented' games. I really do.
