I normally do not create new threads, but I was curious to see if Moderators and/or Bungie staff ever read fan fictions? If so, on HBO, fanfiction.net, B.net, or elsewhere?

Admittedly, this is somewhat of a selfish question because I am in the middle of one, but just to keep it kosher, I won't include any links.

News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

I suspect many do if they have the time.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I know that for a very short period of time, Sir_Brilliant had his Fan-Fic has a sticky in
New Mombasa. now i dont know if a mod read the story, but that must count for somthing.

Ach! Was ist los?

I don't bother. Most of the ones I've seen are terribly written.

Besides, I'm too busy trying to finish my own original work.

I had tried to read some in the past, but most of them weren't that great so I gave up.

I have to admit it... I've never really come across one I've considered all that good.

True, true, there are many not-so-good FFs out there. Still, I wondered....

Meh, I don't take the time to read them because I usually end up giving my input, they end up getting offended, and neither of us leaves very happy. I prefer "pure" fiction anyway because that takes creativity. Anyone can take Master Chief and put him in some dangerous situation, but it takes a truly creative person to come up with an entire city full of unique people and problems. Not that I'm saying I'm one of those people, it's just that I find original characters to be a lot more interesting to read about. That's why all of my stories are written in the Flood, as far away from Halo related material as possible.

I agree with htis, but I most enjoy the fanfictions were people create new charectars for areas of the haloverse that are os of yet untouvhed (but thta is what I am doing so...) Most of the Fanfictions I have read have been terrible, but one in particular I read completly blew me away.

There are a few good fan fiction groups on Bungie.Net. The Official Fan Fiction Group is somewhat dead, The Mirratord is up and coming, and I think there were one or two other significant groups.

I'll be honest. Most fan-fictions I have read were straight and utter crap. The few good ones out there get a lot of attention, making it seem like at times that there are quite a few skilled writers out there. When feeling discouraged writing a story, the best frame of mind to be in, which I am going to start pushing in my group The Mirratord, is that a professional writer is an amature that didn't quit. The Moderators have lives, and when they are on here, they are [hopefully] doing their job, leaving little time to do much of anything on this site.

Same here. Not only that, but I have natural dislike for fan fics, mainly because they usually don't go together with the actual stories. I prefer something original. That said, there are indeed several fan fics that I read with pleasure.

Speaking of which, when is that Marathon play supposed to debut on Broadway? You promised a Fall premiere, and now it's Winter...

I've tried...so very hard...to read just a couple of fanfics. I have so much trouble I can barely get through the first paragraph. Even when I help other people write one, or write one of my own, I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Which is why I am trying to lay off the stuff for good.

Winter doesn't start until the 21st. Duh. And we thought you were smart.

To reinstate my original points, most fanfics are utterly terrible, but there is the occasional diamond in the ruff.

With 13 days left, do you honestly think Bob will have the time to setup everything and properly advertise before the coming of Winter? And I thought you were smart.

Become the hunter.

I've read a few fanfictions, but for the most part 'm too lazy to read the whole thing. I prefer original stories anyways.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

Really the only fan fiction I read was SirBilliant's The Ark. That was amazing! After a while they started to get old and I never read any. But now there's one that I'm a little interested in. I don't remember what it's called, but its about Harvest.
It'd be interesting to know how many Bungie guys read fan fics.

After I read one in S_B's fan fiction contest where the Chief said "sorry sur but i dont give a dam" and blew up New Mombasa, completely dis-obeying his orders, I sort of gave up on them...

Yeah well, I nearly gave up on life after that one.

None of you remembered that I'm responsible for the movie and not the play?

And I thought I was in smart company here.

*points at Bob's sig*

I assume the problem with most of the FFs is that random people write complete crap about how awsum da cheef iz. If people actually wrote about someone that hasn't been mentioned in the Halo canon before, they might actually be able to write something good, without setting off the fanboys.

I almost never bother. If I wanted to read a story, I would read a real book. :-)
