Subject: The Future of Bungie

@trueunderdog

Chapter

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

Bungie made great games before the Halo series. They will continue to make great games in the future. Mabian really did bring up many good points, such as what happens to the community based on Bungie's next move. The only thing I really have to add to this discussion is that those who leave after the Halo series is over are more than likely those who were never really wanted here in the first place.

Let's compare it to something outside the video game world. Sports fans will make a good example. I'm talking about those people who will over-zealously root for a team that is predicted to go far in the playoffs or even win the championship game? They can be referred to as "T-Shirt Fans".

Those who leave the Bungie.net forums after the Halo series comes to an end are nothing more than the "T-Shirt Fans" of gaming. I never got to play Marathon on my computer because for some reason the download doesn't work and it opens a Word Document (I'm using a Mac). If anyone has a link to a place I can download the series, I'd much appreciate it (the sticky with the link is the one I tried)

Anyways, I digress. I've played Marathon at a friends house for a small amount of time and I liked it. There are other good Bungie games, too (Gnop anyone?). Halo is what got many people into Bungie (myself included) and I figure that the next game they make has just a good of a chance as Halo: Combat Evolved did when it first started.

I'm going to stop trying to figure it out and predict what Bungie will do, only for the fact that I want to be surprised (pleasantly surprised, hopefully) when they unveil their next game.

Edit: I was kind of tired posting this, so if something doesn't make sense, please PM me.

Obviously the OP has never heard of Bungie's aspirations for world domination.

In all seriousness, it seems that the need to 'Make great games' is most definitely a part of their mission statement, or it should be. And that is not just my opinion. I have seen Frankie state this multiple times.

As for the future, I actually look forward to whatever Bungie may have up it's sleeve. They have shown to me that they have found a near perfect balence in maintaining 'Can't put the contoller down' gameplay and at the same time building and maintaining intrigue throughout the story of the game itself. With that said, they are not wholly their own entity. They are owned by Microsoft and there are a few routes, such as developing truly cross-platform games, which may not be feasible. Unless Microsoft relinquishes some of their hold on licensing, or something.

Nevertheless, the future looks good. Oh, and the day Marty leaves will be a sad one for sure. It seems possibly too much to hope for him sticking around after Halo 3 is done...

I don't think the forums are in a bad shape, the Halo 3 forum is just full of super sleuth wannabes.

The Maw is still good. Anyway, once MS grabs something, it don't let go... unless it becomes profitable to do so.
...
Oi! Bungie! Stop making good games for a bit!

I give 'em five years. Don't know why. After the Halo's have worn off they won't be very popular.

I would bet that Microsoft will be having them Slaving over some other large crazy money making game...

As much as I appreciate a die hard Bungie fan...you do know that there are a ton of good games out for the 360 right? Just because Bungie makes some of the best FPS out there doesn't mean they are the only good game developers.

Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear?
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality

This is idiotic. Bungie has millions of loyal fans, multiple successful serieses (Myth, Marathon, Halo), and a totally killer team of hard-working no nonsense (O.o) men and women (Hurray for asskissing!), and some other thing they have no one else has; I forgot what it was.

Now, I wouldn't agree with what Piggyfool1 said, but wouldn't you say that the popularity of Halo has far superceded the popularity of Marathon and Myth? Not that they're not popular in their own right, but they have more of a cult following than mass appeal.

Having said that, I believe Bungie has something wholly new and interesting on tap for life after Halo. Innovation in modern gaming has become something difficult to do; personally, I'd love to see a whole new genre created. Perhaps an MMOFPS, something in which some people have expressed interest. However, I'd think Bungie would be sick of making FPS games by now. Maybe a game that takes us through Shishka's life as a pegboy?

Bungie was the actually company who spurred me to think. My dad worked for apple in my youth and as I'm sure you can Marathon was a huge lan party hit for most apple offices. So my dad one day brought home a copy of the game (ha, I can still remember the four black flimzy floppies) and I began to play it. Now of course, I only being six and a kindergartner at the time played the game on, big suprise, kidergarden difficulty level. Marathon was a completely different land compared to the LEGO's and Care Bares I was all to familiary with.

While my reading skills were quite good for my age at that time, I still spent hours reading and deciphering the monitor messages from Leela and Durndal. It was at this time I discovered a wounderous thing called, a PLOT! Although I couldn't completely understand all the twists and turns throughout the game, I do vividly remember nearly peeing my pants after finally realizing (on the 4th or 5th time through reading) what Durndal said he was about to to.

I'll admit it, I was one word and one word alone. JEALOUS. How could these people think up of somewthing like this?!?!?! They were freaking geniuses!!!!! From that day on I have lived with a conviction to be smart and create things! And I wasn't simply just thinking video games. I thought of things like stories, and actually now thanks to Bungie I spend most of of my spare time writing music. Bungie changed my life, litteraly, it is no laughing matter. They were the first people who ever made me think outside the box and frankly I can't imagine a world without them. As long as I have known them, Bungie has alway been able to cook up a mean story, and that is the steak of any fine meal. I hope they go on, and prosper as a company. But I pray that they won't fall to some of the mindless ideas out there today. I honestly think I would cry any day that Bungie released anything that was less than fabulous. So, to sum it all up I hope Bungie continues but only if they continue in greatness.

Thanks a million guys :)

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

When they made a sequal of marathon, people thought jason had lost it.
When they made a RTS, people said they would die away.
When microsoft bought them, people said they would be too commercialized.
When Alex left, some people thought halo 2 would just be a halo redux.

Are we seeing a pattern here?

Oh man, you just missed a big Halo-referenced opportunity. You should have said, "What are they to say now?" So close to being cool. Except for not really.

I´ll say ten years, by that time, a few old guyes got out, and a few new guyes got in, they make a mistake, and BOOM!

There is no Bungie, only Microsoft.

plus, my knee told me.

With the possible exception of invisible germs, ninjas are the most stealthy entity known to man. Look behind you right now! you don't see anything do you? Thats because the ninja standing there is to stealthy to be seen.

i admit that i havent played marathon, the first bungie game i played was oni on the ps2, i had no idea what a bungie was at that time...i was young and naive, yet it did make me think, there the kind of games that are worth being called games ones that have a story line, and it seems that most of bungies games have great storylines. from that point on during my transition from ps2-computer-my friends xobx-better computer-my xbox 360 and uber computer i never played a game that diddnt have a great story somewere in it...
bungie will only be dead to me the day that they start makeing sports games.....

I can hear it now. People on the forums talking about how the pimp cane takes no skill and how taking out a scoped, superaccurate, 3 shot kill pimp slap ruined P@S 2 compared to the original.

Just so I can be be the first I'm going to put P@S > P@S 2 in my signature. I'm registering the domain name http://pas2sucks.com just incase anyone tries to steal my idea. One day you will all bow before me and call me a prophet.

Halo will not be the end of Bungie. Bungie has other terrific games under their belt, Marathon a big one. If they can make great games like that, they can still make great games. No doubt.
It also depends on what the industry will be like. Will Hillary Clinton get her way and destroy the video game industry? Or will it change too much that Bungie may just drop out of it? Who knows.
