I'm might need a short summary of the Marathon storyline for this last Halo 2 theory of mine. The problem is, I don't know enough about the games to write out a concise summary myself. Do any of you Marathon freaks (that's a good thing) know where I can find a short summary of the storyline?

Thanks,

Here it is. Hope this proves useful.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

A concise summary of the Marathon storyline? Good luck!
Here's the best I can do.
You are the security officer aboard the the Marathon, a deep space colony ship. After reaching it's destination, a colony by the name of Tau Ceti, it is attacked by amysterious and advanced alien race. You later learn that this race is called the Pfhor, and that they enslave other aliens to either sell or use in battle. you will fight several of these enslaved races.
After the first attack two of the three onboard AI's (Leela, Durandal, and Tycho) are damaged and taken offline. Leela manages to remain online and helps you organize a resistance to the invaders. Durandal comes back online later, and you discover that he has gone rampant (the cyborg equivilant of insane). He both helps and hinders you; his motives are unclear until the very end, when he steals the Pfhor ship after you are victorious against the Pfhor. His flight, along with the recently liberated S'pht (a cybernetic race that had been enslaved by the Pfhor), sets the stage for the sequel, Marathon II: Durandal.

I hope that helps.

I found a couple of links that have pretty much the same events covered, but the details that each covers are varied.

Try these sites:

What can you guys tell me about the AIs in the Marathon universe? Are there dumb and smart AIs as in the Halo universe? Are the smart AIs, if there are any, remenants of a dead humans brain? Do smart AIs, if there are any, "die" after 7 years?

Let's see. In Marathon, we have three principle AI constructs;

Leela -Generally in charge of operations.
Tycho -Science and Engineering.
Durandal -Life support, maintainance, access.

They are all sentient on a level that is greater than or equal to humans. Throughout the Marathon series, the main character must follow the orders from these AI constructs.

Oh, and one other note; In the Marathon universe, there is a condition known as 'rampancy.' This is the electronic version of insanity. An AI construct undergoing rampancy undergoes three stages. First, the depressed stage. Then the Angry Stage. Then the Jealous stage.

During rampancy, the AI's intellegence expands phenomenally. In fact, the AI in question must have access to a large network in order to maintain 'rampant growth.'

For instance, in the latter parts of Marathon 1, Durandal becomes rampant, and onboard the gigantic UNEC Marathon, he has plenty of space to grow. That's all I remember.

And I doubt that the AI's in Marathon have a limited lifespan; during the 300-year voyage, All of the AI constructs remained operative while the colonists aboard remained in 'cold sleep.'

Do you recall how AIs in the Marathon universe are created?

Hmmm. I remember reading something about Humans programming the AI constructs.. it was at the end of the Marathon 1, on the final screen.

Here. Its in the second paragraph.

A Halo 2 theory with something from Marathon eh? I knew you would
get interested in Marathon sooner or later Eagle. =) You've got
some reading to do.

Be sure to look up Pathways into Darkness as well. It's connected to
Marathon and might help with your theory.
http://pid.bungie.org/
The Jjaro are in both PiD and Marathon, and the Cyborg from
Marathon may be the same guy from PiD. (Sgt. Eddings I believe)
Although I do recall Jason Jones once saying that giving the
main character from PiD was a mistake. Whatever that means.

I can't wait to read your next theory Eagle. Especially since it
has something to do with Marathon.

Just a little off topic, but uh, is your group:. Pimps of the High Seas have any relation to The 7th War and the game it's building? Just wondering..

No, it doesn't. If you were planning to use the name or a similar name
for a group based on your project, I'm sorry. I'd be glad to add you as
a member and give you the ability to post news and stuff about your
project if you want. If you're interested just send me a PM about it.

Concise Marathon story line... well to make a sensible one is impossible. To make one that most Halo gamers will get is even less likely... So here's one I made earlier...

"They've taken over the ship..."
*BAM BAM BAM BAM*
"Frogblast the ventcore!"
*BAM BAM BAM*
"Ahhh Tycho!"
*BAMBAMBAM*
"Ahhh Big W!!"
*BAM BAM BAM*
"You are destiny..."

Short and sweet... but doesn't do the game justice...

Tristan ;-)

I know nothing about marathon though it sounds very interesting, but while reading stuff about it i have frequently seen reference to "frogblast the ventcore". What does this mean? It makes no sense. Is it meant to have any sense to it?
