Heyyo,

I think everyone here on the HaloPC forums is fed up with xbox users thinking their xbox is still better than PC's. They became budget technology when the Geforce4 TI line came rolling out. You see, the Xbox has a Geforce 3 innit (maybe TI 500, maybe not, but probalby does), while newer PC's have massive PCI-Express videocards. A WHOLE new slot for cards of all kinds.

The benchmarks I will present are good ol' http://www.tomshardware.com/ vga charts.

VGA Chart I (For those who don't know roman numerals: I = 1... this chart is labeled as Low-system specs charts, which an xbox falls under)

Here's an old benchmark showing a PC (that in many ways already kicks an xbox's ass.

as Skippy TBK points out (I added the 1 touch of extra detail), here's an xbox's specs:

Xbox: 800 MHz, 128 RAM, 64MB (Geforce 3) Directx 8.1 card.

The Test PC for this benchmark is:

AMD AthlonXP 2000+, 256MB PC-266 MHz RAM CL2 (2x128MB), and the video card's ranged from geforce2 MX's and ATI Radeon VE's to Geforce4 TI 4600's and ATI Radeon 8500's.

Here's a 3D Mark 2001 benchmark:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20020418/vgacharts-0 5.html

NOTE:
Geforce4 TI 4600: 9889
Geforce3 TI 500 score: 7783

As you can see, the geforce4 TI beat the living S*it outta the xbox's equivalent video card. by a whole 2106. In 3D Mark 2001 Grading, that's quite a bit.

Now, I'd show you newer cards using 3D Mark 2001 gradings, but it seems tom's hardware upgraded to 3D Mark 2003 which uses a whole different grading system.

So in conclusion, if a Geforce 4 TI 4600 beat an xbox back then, what chance does an xbox stand against the new ATI Radeon x800's, and the Nvidia 6800's? the answer? none. Even a Geforce FX5600 is stronger than a Geforce 3, but still sucks.

My old comp (same specs just minus that 2nd stick of 512mb RAM) had a FX5600, on 3D Mark 2001SE I scored: 8323 So even that crappy card beat an xbox by a lot of points (can't really compare to tom's hardware benchmark due to different systems).

QUOTE Zoner (THE Zoner):

"But the real question is the overall performance of the game. As publically known the XBOX uses a 733mhz P3 celeron CPU. However compared to a P4, its really fast, like on par with a 1.2ghz P4. The XBOX ram is fast, much faster than a normal P3 would have as well. In addition to these basic differences, any game on the PC has to run through a hardware abstraction known as Direct3D. On the XBOX the app gets to be hardcoded for XBOX, but on the PC D3D generates hardware independent data and it gets sent to D3D, through nasty things such as ring0 context switches to get into the kernel, as well as spending a good deal of time on the CPU due to the driver having to translate the commands from the hardware independent D3D to the video cards native instruction set. Net result: the game is some percentage slower (cant say on exact numbers here) on the PC in addition to the CPU/RAM differences."

Yeah, compared to a P3. Or a 1.2GHz P4. What about a 2 or 3GHz CPU like we've got now? The Xbox does Not have faster RAM than most of us have either, simply because it's old and cheap. I imagine that article is years old, from a time when the xbox was first released, especially since it's still talking about P3's as the PC standard. PC's these days are able to cope with the more complicated method of game processing because of brute force and speed. The advances in graphics cards alone are a good testament to how far Pc gaming has come. The xbox is still called a 'next generation' console... AAAHAHAHAHA try last generation. Consoles will Never be ahead of PC's because they can't be upgraded, and therefore always get left behind.

I have to say, yes pcs are generally more powerful and have more advanced graphics and stuff. The main problem is that to take advantage of this you have to have top of the range pc. I have a fairly old pc (2 years), and that means that i cant play many new pc games and those that i can take ages to load, dont look as good as they could, are jerky etc. The X box has the games designed for them so there is no problem there, and for the example of halo, the x box beats the pc (i have played both). The graphics on the pc were -blam!-, and it didnt run nearly as smoothly, and the game wasnt nearly as fun. Also with an xbox it is far easier to set up a multiplayer game than on a pc (especially, if like me you dont have broadband) and when you do, you have your mates there with you, so you can chat , what ever at the same time, not really possible with a pc.

Its not all about the hardware

Heyyo,

Err, it's still easy to setup Multiplayer on PC, you just have to THINK. It's now hard, 1 comp starts a server, others just connect direct IP. Simple.

The reason yet again you think xbox has better graphics is your PC is 2 years old. Get a job, get a better PC.

And for chatting? you obviously havn't heard of TeamSpeak. You can voice chat with up to 2000 people at 1 time I believe, so if you're too cheap to download a small program, and buy a little $9 mic, then stick with your precious xbox.

I didnt play halo on my pc but a far better one (i wouldnt even try on my one). The graphics were -blam!- on that pc and the game didnt go nearly as naturally as on x box (though i did like the banshees and some of the level designs were nice).

How is switching on an xbox not easier than setting up an internet game (especially for those who havent done it before or that frequently), and you need broadband to play well, which i and many people in the world dont have. My parents would never get it (it would cost more money than our current phoneline), and not everyone is able to update their computer every year to handle the new games that have just come out. And now im at uni i cant even afford a pc or broadband. (im using a uni pc to access this site, not my own )

Talkin on the internet is just not the same as messin around with your friends. Me and my friends have a great laugh when we are having 7 player games on sidewinder. We play competitively, or just daftly, what ever takes our fancy. You cant do that with strangers over the net.

Heyyo,

Well, that depends on the other players really. On SvenCoop I've had fun with a few guys. We were signin to Tenacious D, that was a blast. But yeah, playing with friends is much better for sure. One of the main reasons clans were started in the 1st place: to bring a bunch of people together to have fun. Now most clans forget this concept and just work for the higheststats. (I think this started with CS...)

If you have a good broadband connection then any good game on PC is great.

Don't forget, some great games aren't new. Half-Life, and all it's mods run good even on old computers. Quake 3 Area, and Team Arena are fun games too. Those also run great on a dialup computer. ;)

half lifes great, but i lost it. I had intended to start playing it again with one o' my pals over the internet, then found i couldn't find the bloody thing. (i have the same problme with all my stuff). One of the reasons i bought it was because it worked well on older pcs. May be ill get a new copy when i go home, only a fiver or summat. Any who i'll be back to having withdrawel symptoms from lack of any computer game, pc or otherwise. -blam!- its crap having no money.

Sorry about any offense i caused anyone

Its called Tweaking. Intel designed the chipset only for the Xbox so that it will function on games only. PC CPU are completely different when it comes to running application or games. Regardless whether the chipset was made for Xbox in that year, the next year, the cpu for the PC is already more powerful then the Xbox.

I'm getting blamming sick of this. Try playing on a PC which Can run it smoothly before making your prejudiced, ill-informed opinions. It might be blam on your PC, is so then too bad. Don't tell everyone else out there that they're wrong about it running smoothly on their PC's. The graphics are not better on xbox, because the resolution is much lower for one thing. You're probably too stupid to understand what that means. Draw depth is greater on PC, the textures appear slightly finer, and specular lighting effects are far more vibrant on cards than support them. Again, most xbox devotees won't appreciate this because their idea of being a gamer is to buy a box which does all the gaming for you while you hold some lump of black plastic. You only need 1 PC to play with 15 other people from anywhere on the world. How easy is it to get 16 mates in one place with 4 xboxes and 16 controllers? And if you argue that there's xbox live, then that contradicts your argument that PC's are crap coz they need broadband. So does xbox live.

I challenge you to deny me that you're jealous of people with better PC's than yours, which are able to get Halo to run perfectly, and to look better than it ever will on xbox.

Heyyo,

PC's don't run smoothly? jesus, have you been isolated from the outside world buddy? You can't judge a PC from 1 game. HaloPC diddn't turn out that great preformance to system specs wise yes, but other games with better graphics than HaloPC run WAAY smoother. As I've said many times, Far Cry is a prime example. Half-Life 2 will be another example, UT2k4 is another one... the list goes on. Games that were designed for pc, and not ported are the ones to judge a PC's smoothness. Half Life 2's minimum requirements are plenty low, and unlike HaloPC, are more accurate. Like Skippy says, for minimum specs, they aimed too low for HaloPC.

[EDIT]
Heh, hey skippey, we at least helped these xbox n00bs realise that PC's are stronger, so they''ve got half the brains needed to understand the differences between an xbox and a PC. :p

Lol I wouldn't be so sure MarD, there's not enough room in their heads for accepting the paradisian world of PC gaming. If only they knew how much like a PC their beloved xbox is (albeit an old and weak PC).

It's halarious that they're Still waiting for FarCry: Instincts to come out on xbox, and when it does, the story is shorter, the levels are tiny, the draw distance is patethic and the graphics are hmm shall we say the best that directx 8 can offer? lol. It'll be like you sneezed on your monitor. Same with HL2, shame to waste all the time and effort Valve spent on Source, considering the xbox version is likely to look little different to the original half life of 1996.

Im sorry to come back to this, but once again the argument shouldnt be about hardware and power. There are some really old games that are fun and people still play. The important part is that a game is fun, no matter how good the graphics are, what its being played on etc. If the pc is more to your liking, and you have one that is suffieciently powerful enough, go ahead and play on the pc. If you want to play on x box do that. Halo is fun on both. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Yes an x box is very similar to a pc, and pcs have now well over taken the xbox, but for people like me who have a -blam!- old pc at least we know that the games thatwe buy are going to work. I would get more pc games if i had a decent pc (far cry, battlefield vietnam, Half life 2) but my cant run these and not everyone can frequently buy new pcs.

This argument over which is better should stop, as they are designed for different styles of play, and different people will prefer which ever one suits them.

xbox is weaker than most PCs, just consider the fact that we have CPUs running and 4.2GHz (P4E), that is crazy, compared to the xbox's 733MHz Celeron, the xbox's video is 64MB, and the x800xt from ATI runs at 256MB, PC is the obvious winner, now don't go on and say that the xbox is more stable, the xbox has been prone to many crashes, due to the overheating,

I am still an avid lover of the xbox, but just cuz i like the xbox doesn't mean that i can denie the facts.
by the way the 4.2GHz processor is available at Falcon Northwest

The Xbox Now cost 150 # + S Controller 25.0 = 175.-

A computer now cost alike 500-1000

Unbelievable that you could say that AngelSlayer. After all that undisputable fact, your bare-faced ignorance shines through as you try to maintain your dillusion that your xbox is better than some of the most powerful gaming machines in the world. The cost is beside the point. Joking with friends is fun and entertaining, and that's free, so by comparason the xbox is over-priced entertainment. So you see if you're willing and able to pay for gaming devices then that's up to you, and has no effect on which platform is 'lots better'. I'm willing and able to afford a PC which whips the xbox's ass in terms of what kind of gaming experience it can deliver. Halo's maybe not the best example to show this, because despite the Pc version's additional bonuses they're mostly the same game, but think about games like FarCry, HL2 or even something like Warhammer 40K or Rome: Total War. Sure the xbox will eventually get a couple of those games, and after all that wait you'll be rewarded with a low-graphics version of the game, and often a cut down story with smaller levels too. Certainly the case with FarCry. And games like Rome: Total War will never get on xbox because it's just way too lacking in processing power and input devices. As a gaming system it trades off a broad gaming frontier for ease of use. Fine for some people but I'd rather not restrict myself to the games that microsoft decides I'm allowed to play.

Heyyo,

Yes, it's true what you say Socialist, it's aboot PC/xbox is aboot gameplay and not preformance, but I just created this thread to inform those xbox users that a good PC are not s*it compared to an xbox.

It just annoys me to hear n00bs say "Oh, my xbox is better than my PC, so all PC's must suck." This isin't aimed at you Socialist, cause you're smart. :) But you know? If you for those who love xbox so much, go put Linux onnit and stop visitng these forums from a PC.... oh wait M$ says that's Illegal. Why? cause apparently Xbox is not a PC... but yet, they call it a PC Console... The reason for this is that Linux isin't owned/condoned by M$ so it's not allowed on the Xbox, and oh, M$ can't make any profit off free linux. Simple. And now xbox 2 won't have an HD cause of this, but 1gig flash cards. So I'd be too small to fit a whole operating system plus anything else.
