Why can't we have pictures in sigs? Other forums do, and it is fun to see who can make the best signature, and it also just lets you have some freedom to express yourself.

Now that you've taken the time to look at my sig, I actually regret not providing you with something more worthwhile.

I frequent a rather small forum that allows pictures in the user's sigs. I can't count the number of times someone has place some absurdly large image in their sig or put something there that was just a bit too vulgar for the site. I shudder to think what sort of things we would see if Bungie allowed pics in sigs. I'm sure every new spam account would come equipped with a picture of a giant dong, -blam!-, or friggin lemon party.

  • 12.13.2006 7:44 AM PDT

Next thing you know, spammers, etc., will post inappropriate images on their sig.

Pictures can really slow down people's experience on Bungie.net

What will happen is some little kid will do a [Image Removed] post to some GINORMOUS photo that takes even the broadband folks like 1 min. to freakin load. Imagine the ole' 56k'ers out their.... ouch!

Plus have all the random sigs with pictures can sometimes make things look trashy...

I disable sigs if I visit another site. There are some exceptions but most of the time the signature picture is distracting and gaudy. And pictures would ruin the sexy aesthetic appeal that this forum has. So no.

Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear?
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality

You can always link to a picture if you would like.

While the rules do seem strict to an outsider or newbie, they keep the forums in a (relatively) excellent shape compared to other, more cluttered and choppy, forums.

I am quite sure that no one here wants to see me in the nude. I find the thought rather disturbing myself of what could happen.

That wasn't very convincing, was it?

Become the hunter.

I like the lack of picture sigs. People get known for their ability to write a decent post, instead of how good they're with photoshop.

Huh? Did someone say sophisticated?

Anyone have a dictionary? Or did he just hit his head on the keyboard?

I'd rather read than look at a bunch of random, pretty pics. B.net's layout is t3h sexy, and having pics in signatures would make b.net's layout the opposite of sexy. You fill in the blank.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

I'm on another forum quite often and one guy has a picture of another dude's arse in his signature.

Now, he's never been blacklisted for it because the ToU are much less like rules and more like...guidelines.

Ok...so there are mostly "mature" ish people on that forum so it doesn't really matter (I just don't like looking at it every other post) and the maturity of the bungie.net community is far below that of the other forum I'm in.

So basically, I don't want to see a picture of some dude's nads every other post here so I'm sure it's not going to change anytime soon.

Although I see the problems with signatures on forums, but all in all they really arent that significant. I have never been to a forum where rude, racist, or exposing material was present in a signature. Even if it was there, banning the member would be an easy task. Its no different than a false link in someones signature to a pornographic and vile nature website. I would at least think that we could post images within our own topics, making the need to hotlink less prevelant and making it easier for users to preview the images, be it fan-art or whatever.

Signature images are also a great way to get a much more diverse community, IMO. They allow a sense of individuality, where these set forum avatars make it very difficult. I realise the precautions your taking, becuase Halo2sucks.com has the same fears, which are definately IMO misplaced and exaggerated. There are forums with hundreds of thousands of members just like Bungie.net that allow signature images as well as custom avatars (Artisticgfx.com, Neowin.net, etc.) There are virtually no problems with vulgar material on those forums because it is filtered out after a certian amount of time.

Sure, there may be a few people who try it the first couple months, but after a while they will get tired of the trick and just stop trying. That is how it is with any form of expression, be it text, video, or image. The ability to express yourself in image can sometimes be more effective than just a phrase or motto. "A picture is a thousand words" as some would say, especially if it is a depiction of your artistic style and talent.

Should we ban signature text becuase we can link to offensive content? Or becuase we can make images of inappropriate things with the text? No, becuase that would destroy near all sense of individuality on these forums. This is the same phylosophy you should view a signature image as. Sure, people may be idiots and post outside the rules, there is always some rule to be broken. But that shouldnt stop you from serving your members the right to express themselves in more than just text.

You are free to express yourself. Within certain limits.

These are discussion forums, discussions that take place in text. It is the medium of expression that is preferred here. What you say and do is far more important (and telling) than a graphic inserted after every post.

Smaller, less populated forums, or ones with less restrictive Terms of Use (or more mature members, either one) support and allow such sigs. To me, they are clutter, visual noise that distracts from what I am really there to do. To see what others say and to say what I think. In text.

If someone wants to "stand out" here, they only need to express themselves using their own words and actions. After all, that is what we have to go on here.

More than anything? I think that it is another difference that sets this site apart from many others. The clean consistency of the forum layout and the lack of pictures of people's 'nads.

This is a misconception. Images are instant, links, are not. You HAVE to click them, first off. Like Recon said; "With this, you CHOOSE what to look at." With a nasty picture in a signature, it's there, and it's stuck. You're scrolling down a page of posts, and -blam!-, you've just been, semi-literally, scarred with a pornographic image that, chances are, you didn't want to see, or at least your mother's wouldn't want you to see...

Of course, I suppose some of us are more "Oh, it's just the human body!" than others, but again, just once is more than enough when I'm looking to talk to people about Halo and Bungie, not to get some disgusting image I didn't ask for, or expect.

True, an image is more of a youve seen it so its too late. Unfortunately this happens everywhere, not just here. And most children today have already been exposed plenty of times on the internet.

Im not saying that we should by all means not worry about that problem becuase its probably already happen, but its still a littl extreme to ban something for a minor fear of a very unlikely event. There is always a spammer, and there will always be a way for a spammer to get to us, no matter how many precautions we take. So why destroy the loyal member's liberties in the process of trying to catch that one spammer?

Unlikely event? With the number of people here, and the weekly idiot that comes in to spam?

That's quite a self-defeating prophesy you have there, Ultima Geek.

"It has a chance of working, but probably won't.. Let's not bother. Stopping it is innevitable."
This is a terrible way to go about things. And just plain lazy, at that.

And how is signature pictures a liberty we have? It's truly not necessary.

Dammit, i hit the submit and it took me to the front page :/, I just typed a 4 paragraph rebuttal and now its all gone. Yet another problem with these forums...

Anyways, as I was saying before this unfortunate event...

I like to put my member happiness and freedom before anything else. Showing at least a little bit of trust in your community, even if you really cant garauntee anything, is always a good thing to display, and makes the members happy. Giving them simple liberties and privilages symbolizes your trust in that member, and makes them not only feel more as if they are actually part of the community, but allows them to make themselves noticed in that community in more ways than one.

Giving members privilages allows for all kinds of possibilities. Groups could form, global community activities could arise. But all these possibilities are erased becuase of the paranoid fear of the inevitable spammer. "I dont want to go in the water because it may be cold". This type of phylosphy is flawed, its being afraid of something normal and average. You fear your community will abuse the system, meaning you dont trust them and probably dont have any feeling of control or authority either.

If you cant control your community well enough to trust them with certian liberties, then you shouldnt be running a forum at all. The only liberties we have here is the right to voice an opinion in a topic and have custom signature. 2 liberites, both with set limits to them as to how we may voice our opinion and how many characters can be used to set ourselves apart from the rest of the community.

If you dont think thats almost overristricting, then I dont know what is.

In reply to the recent post:

K.I.S.S. is one of my favorite phrases, but sometimes simplicity bites you in the ass. People like new things, and new things give them incentive to return. I have come to these forums on and off, probably about 4 month periods of being here, then gone. Why? Becuase I need a break from the repetetiveness. This forum is so old and dull to me its hard to look at. Change is a good thing, and just because it "works" doesnt mean you should just blow off the member's needs and say to hell with you. Thats like if McDonalds took a servey of how many people liked the "we love to see you smile" motto, and then said to hell with your opinion when the survey results came out negative. It makes people angry and not want to come back.

I know im sorta talking in circles, im kinda sick right now and am not thinking straight. But sometimes it seems to me that all the bungie forum team cares about is not having too much work rather than pleasing members. They only care about themeselves and not the community it seems from the above posts. "Why change when its so easy to just sit here and change nothing? Despite popular opinion?"

And did you ever stop to think that maybe that paint job is a portrait of who they are? People dont show off art for no reason, its so they can express themselves in their own way. Why limit that expression other than "we only need words". Some people cant express themselves adequately in words, some need another mode of expression.

PS: you have a baised look on art, dont you?
