Subject: A Problem with blacklistings

It seems strange to me that when a user is blacklisted they are unable to see the forums. This is kind of pointless considering a user just has to log out to be able to see the forums again. I mean sure, stop them from posting and replying but there is really no point in stopping members from seeing the forums when they can bypass it by simply logging out.

Just a thought, is there a particular reason for this or is it just an unwanted effect of the current system. I have been thnking about it. I think it serves a better purpose to let users see the forum even when blacklisted. Not only does this stop the pointless punishment but it may stop people making duplicate accounts just to view the forums. Just me thinking while bored so I don't know if this is a good or bad idea.

[EDIT: And no I haven't been blacklisted before]

Well, two things

1) Good idea, it'll save a little time if you were blacklisted, having to log in and out.
However
2) They did something wrong, so inconvience shouldn't be an issue to them. They must have done something so immoral and in such bad character that they deserve to be slapped in the face with a wet rock.

All in all, i give it a thumbs up.

1) The idea is not to save time for people who are blacklisted but to stop them thinking they have to make a new account to see the forums.

2) Yes they did do something wrong and they shouldn't go make a new account so they can do it again. They should serve their time like everyone else who is blacklisted, but as a non-member can see the forum why not blacklisted people? Especially if it will help prevent people having mutliple accounts.

  • 12.13.2006 11:27 AM PDT

I stick by the wet rock though.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Blacklisted users CAN see the forums.

Alls they need to do is Not sign into there account.

Its very simple like you said.

So i think your idea is a good one.

The only problem with Blacklistings is their inability to keep people off the site.

But as late, that might change >_>

Anyways, as for the topic, just because a user can see the forums he can't interact with doesn't mean he/she isn't going to make a new account anyways.

More or less, if someone wants to come back, they're goind to come back, albeit on a different account. I mean, I guess it's easy considering a large chunk of users don't feel their account is anything special (especially the people who don't have linked gamertags, as a blacklisting actually affects those.)

I like that blacklisted persons have to log out, I wouldn't mind having to put an extra step in there just to make it more of a nuisance...

It is an unitended effect of the way the system checks for your ban state (and nothing to do with the Ideal Science board - we are running a highly customized build that is a lot different from what you can buy from them - their public product is based off the build we use).

Anyway, it may change at some point in the future.

And by change at some point in the future would that mean a giant change in the way the boards look and interact?

We've been here since you left.
We left before you came.

Disembodied Soul blacklists you immediately again if you try to make a seperate account while your blacklisted.

Not like I'd know >_>

But I don't see the harm in letting blacklisted users see what happens in the forum as long as they can't reply.

You might as well put cement around the cells in prison.

What's really stupid, is when trolls get Blacklisted, all they do is make another account.

I agree with you...somewhat. You should be able to view the Forums, but nothing more.

Then again, when your Blacklisted, what is the point of viewing the Forums, if you can't post or reply to anything?

actually from my one experience (got a bit too flamey) you still can. You can look up a GT, see the games list, levels etc. Just when you try to look at a game it comes up normally except where it normally would say game was purged, unreliable etc. it says you have been blacklisted and cannot view game stats. But im looking at the stats as it said that. its possible i got a lucky glitch though.

That made sense to me, but if its a bit too much of a ramble i'll try to rephrase it.

It doesn't really matter if you can view it or not when your blacklisted. If you want to view it, on your account simple. . .DON'T GET BLACKLISTED!

No no no, I'm leaving home after then, so I might not have Internet.

Anyway, are you planning on taking that bit Achronus? That you can't view forums if you're signed in?

It's fine. Like Achronos stated earlier, he might fix it. If you want to be able to view the Forums, don't get blacklisted. There's no point in viewing the Forums if your blacklisted. You can't start, or reply to topics.

All in all, it wouldn't matter if you can view them or if you can't.

Do not panic, or you will fail.

Or you can be in some good groups and do other things while your blacklisted so it doesn't matter. It worked for me.
