No, I think it's good how it is. If you'd like to view the group's threads, join it.

Well, I think it would be a good way to advertise your group. Or, if you are suspicious of a groups content, you could check their Forum and see what it's like.

However, I definitely believe that it should be an optional thing...Making fun of people behind their backs isn't nearly as fun when they can read everything you say.

RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

I'd go for the option to make them visible or not.

If I'm looking at a group to see whether I'd like to join, seeing the forums would help. It doesn't do anyone any good to have members joining and leaving within days...

There are a few instances I can think of where a group wouldn't want non-members to see their forums, so you'd at least need an option. =)

I like the idea of it being a choice. That way groups like "the guide" that have a lot of resources don't require membership to acsess them, but groups like HFCS could ward of would-be stalkers.

I can only see it work, if there's also the option to close public viewing.
Like Recon said, sometimes, the groups want... privacy.

I agree with many points made already. Only if there is an option to close public viewing. That is really the only way this idea would work. But all around, this sounds like a good idea, I like it. However, if it were to come down to visible or not, I would say not to be visible. Unless there is an option of course. Not sure if that made any sense, so, I am going to stop right there.

You are saying

1. having the choice
2. not having it
3 and the worst being all of them open.

right? If so, that is how I feel.

There's also some Halo 3 info that people can dig up from places, that shouldn't be showed on Bungie, that are in groups.

Only if you can have a privacy option.

It would make groups more like the regular forums, and that would be cool.

Also, another thing. Maybe add a Security Role privilege to let non-members be either able, or unable to view the group's topics.

  • 12.14.2006 3:08 PM PDT

It should be under the discretion of the administrator(s) of the chapter as to whether or not they want their forum to be viewable to the public. I know there are many chapters that would like the public to preview their forum to see if they are interested, but I also know of quite a few chapters that like to keep their forums for members only.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

If we let people view the forums, then whats the point of having people join groups?

Might has well just give them the ability to post also.

  • 12.14.2006 4:47 PM PDT

Yes with option to close public viewing is no doubt the most popular one for the reasons already stated.

And interesting idea. It would give everything a more "open" feel. We're not promised any privacy, but people do expect it.

I am trying to think of a group that might want privacy, and HFCS comes to mind. I could see some issues with our forums being visible to the public. We're not as polite there as we are here.

This could also be a problem for some of the groups that exist because their core purpose is due to restrictions on the public forums. Body Politic for example.

While it is an interesting idea, I would really need to think carefully about it before I would agree. Let me get back to you.

The impression I got wasn't that it you would be able to read or post in any of the threads, just look at the Forum and see what type of things they talk about and whether or not it would interest you. If that were the case, then there would be no problem with breaking the rules or anything.

And as was said earlier, if it is an optional thing, then HFCS would have nothing to worry about.

The point of them joining is allowing them to post. Having a members list with people joining is necessary because you need to be able to alter security roles.

I think the way this option should be built in is through the security role. You already have a security role for non-members. A person with the right security privileges should be able to change the security role for non-members to be able to view the forum. This way the interface already exists for this option. Just make another bubble or check box and tie it to something about view permissions. I would think this is already in the system. Like you can view public forums without signing in, but not group forums without signing in.

I would like to make my group open to the public to view. I think we could attract people if they read the content of the group. I can see why some groups would want privacy, but in other cases privacy is a negative thing.

I think you would be able to read the post. I think it should be just like not being signed into bungie.net. You can still view everything on the forums, but you can't post.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Great idea... make it an option.

Next thing you know, people will be looking at HFCS's forum.

Why not just make your group open. So people can join and then leave within a short period of time if they dont like what they see.

I think it is a good idea if it is an option. The group I go into needs privacy. The mods know what group that is. <_<

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Now this is a pretty sweet idea. It would make it much easier to see how a group is before joining it. If it could be toggled then I see it as a good tool to help drive membership. Then I wouldn't have to take peoples word about how active there group is.

  • 12.14.2006 9:05 PM PDT

I like this idea. Seems decent enough.

I could see someone trying to use it as a more publicly visible way to degrade others, and then also not allowing them to post themselves, since the regular mods don't police groups. This could create another small headache for Achronos in that people could also report a group to him that had insulted said person in a way that was openly visible to members, though nobody could retort unless they were a member. I understand it would be hard to find, being in a Group and all, but some find a way. Be it sigs or advertising in other groups or linking to it from the regular forums.

This is only a small issue and may not even be enough to detract the good from your idea. I like it nonethless and the good could outweigh the bad.

I don't see any harm in letting people that aren't registered or blacklisted, see whats going on in the forums anyways.

I would like to see this happen so i could get a look at what i'm joining before i do, but it does pose a problem for certain groups.
