its like a large force of win going through fusion, thus creating a chain reaction of a huge asplosion of win destroying any fail within its awesomeness.

>>>Don't lock it! Please refrain from talking about individual users that may be mentioned.<<<

I've been very disappointed how the forums sucked lately, so I wrote this little account of my Bungie life. It explains things that I've learned about Bungie.net, which many of you phail at. To sum it up uber-fast for the "I-want-a-preview-before-I-read" type of person, it explains what evolution is. *hint hint*
Okay, for real, these are my personal accounts.

(PS: Read the whole thing, it may seem like a biography, but every story has a lesson...)

(PSS: If a moderator feels this is lock worthy, please allow me to repost, without the chronicle gibberish)

______________________

I used to be rebel, I followed people like "ferret" as a role model for Pete sakes. I've been blacklisted a few times, got into flame wars, made silly threads, and also hated the moderators, which also got me blacklisted. But as the months passed...I still sucked, but it was about to change...

*dramatic theme music*

I began to be a fourm cop. It started when I learned there were going to be new moderators. I stumbled into HFCS and found the list to be 23. As any member like me would do, I was thinking "OMG". Then went to post it on the forums. It got locked and edited, and dmbfan messaged me to be hush hush. I was actully thinking, and I quote myself, OMG I AM THE PROTECTOR OF THE SECRET!

But this little secret also got to Iceman Assassin. He was more like me then, kinda rebelish, a very young and new member. Nothing like the one known today. He messaged me, or I messaged him, who knows. But we were like, OMG, what do we do! It was later agreed we would keep it hush hush also. Little did we know, many, if not hundreds knew this already, but us being the people we were, we felt extremely special. We felt like "the moderators right hand man" or like I said above, "The Protectors of the secret." This is where I end this story. Guess what happened afterwards...

We both began our quest to be the best B.net member we can be...

Iceman was more successful, thus the Iceman you know now, began. I sucked at it. I was an ass-kisser.

>>>!!!The Lesson!!!<<<

This account of my experiences as a member proves one thing. Forum-Copping isn't about ass-kissing to the moderators. But it is a by-product. If your a forum cop, and you get carried away by getting the "I can get the white text" thought etched in your mind, which I did, you'll fail. You'll just come out as a wanna-be. Forum copping starts when you get an experience in which you feel, "close" to the moderators or the forums. When you feel "Hey, helping the moderators and/or the forum isn't so hard," is when forum copping starts. It isn't bad, it's how it ends. Iceman, so far, has done a better job at that, which explains his success(But he is slipping, which is true. Which explains the heated arguments I read lately about him) But to sum it up, he didn't get carried away as I did. It's just a lesson you all need to learn.

If didn't get what I'm saying, Mabian put it in English.

I think Raven's lesson is twofold, though he only actually has one lesson. It seems that one goes to the community, and one goes to other Forum Cops.

I think Raven is trying to tell the community that just because someone is helpful does not mean that that person is trying to become a moderator. Some people try to inform other members of the rules in order to look good, and some people try to inform other members because they feel those members need some guidance.

I think Raven is trying to tell the other Forum Cops that it is pointless to go around and be a "Forum Cop" in order to be recognized.

I don't hate them, its just that they hate me.

It would be an interesting poll to make, if you could get enough to respond honestly. That is, would you want to be a moderator if you had the chance? The funny thing is we all know the answer.

The problem with many, is that they think forum-copping(i.e Locked in 3..2..; This is not a Halo board!) actually may have a purpose when it has none. It is merely another worthless post, just as worthy for consequences as spam in some instances. I used to be like this myself from time to time, though not out of desire to be a mod. I just get tired of a lot of the trash I see, and I used to feel the need to retort.

Now I just PM a mod. Not to help them really, or even the other members, just to get it off my screen because that's the only way I can. I hate to say it, but the mods' jobs are really nothing more than glamorized janitorial work, really, though I appreciate it nonetheless. That's not an insult, just a point of view.

According to the polls that have formulated in the Flood, the majority of people do not want to be moderators. It surprised me the first time, although I know that I'm happy being a lowly member.

There goes my only friendship I thought I had with a mod.[/sarcasm]

I just think some people think of the mods as more important members than others, opinion-wise. As Iceman said once, "You white-texters don't know how much influence you guys have", or something along those lines. Perhaps that just applies to the newer members, as I have seen more members who have been here a while who have a certain mod on their grudge list.

And if what the OP said were true, does Iceman bask in the glow of other members sigging things like ICEMAN ASSASS1N for moderator'?

Actually, from the few times I've talked to "Bobby", he doesn't think all the attention is a good thing. He has to worry that anything he say can and will be used against him because people watch what he says. He really isn't just an "anonymous user" anymore.

I'd like to direct this conversation away from Iceman. If it is directed specifically at him, rather than the issue of forum copping, I might aswell lock this now.

Well, some people do view both as synonomous. All of us had to start somewhere, but it is nice to see that a prodigal son has learned his lesson.

Or maybe I only got the job because I knew Reigi from Myth Jumpers. >_>

I don't post on the forums if someone is doing things the wrong way. I PM them. I don't want to get flamed by ppl who point out "Forum-Coppers". I do also help the moderators in other ways and i like to think i get recognition for it ;)

Yeah I remember that day. 'Twas Mabian whose example I followed though.

These days I prefer the term "Helpful Member." I don't say 'Put this Here' or 'Locked,' which is what people think of when they hear the term nowadays.

From time to time I just like to give some advice, and interact with you guys. Sometimes people mistake stuff like that for pure "forum copping" these days, but with all the stuff available (bnetmods@gmail.com and kd5shw's mod watch,) it's much easier to "forum cop" without really having to "cop" at all.

And about all those "heated discussions," I don't know what that's about.

Oh those? They just keep the forums from being bland in general. People fighting always does, as a rule, spice things up a bit. Which is why we always do it here on Bungie.net.

Civilly.

Usually.

...Probably?

Hey Banshee Barron, I haven't seen you in a while! Where 'ya been?

:-)

Anywho, about what you just said, I suppose that makes sense. But lately it feels as if Bungie.net has become on giant soap opera (with the spamming, flamming, threads directed at certain people, complaints to moderators, changes to the site.)

However, it's an internet forum about a cool company we all want to learn about. I'm just here to discuss stuff, interact with the community, and learn about Bungie and their future.

Good thing it's all just one massive cycle and things will be back to normal eventually.

Oh, and get PM'ed ;-)

In response to this, that's a big "Heck No."

In fact, I find it more annoying than anything. 5 new mods were hired, and around the time I took it to try to become helpful because people were helping me at the time (people like Mabian.) The fact that new mods were hired didn't have anything to do with me wanting to contribute to the community. That actually came from the community helping me so much, and I wanted to help others as well.

I'm not here to be a moderator. I'm here to learn about Halo 3, improve my Halo 2 play, and along the way, learn about Bungie and it's history/future.

And I've said this time and time again.

And I've said this time and time again.

You shouldn't have to explain yourself Ice.

When you look at other forums that have built great communities you'll find that many of the members take it upon themselves to enforce the rules. That doesn't mean they do so in a condescending or authoritative way; just that they take pride in their community and want to help make it a better place.

On many forums people even call out poor spelling and grammar. Personally I like it because it does make a difference and you begin to see less and less poorly constructed posts. I'm not saying we need to go there but it would be nice not to get those occasional headaches from reading posts that seem to have been written by a drunk gorilla (no offense to the webmaster). Anyway, my point is the "forum cop" situation here is very mild. We could probably use some more members that care to enforce the rules.

The best way to "forum cop" is just to be a good member, make good posts, and if a new member looks lost and posts in the wrong forum just shoot them a nice PM explaining what was wrong. I also like to tell them that they can PM me if they have other questions. Also I try to only bother the mods when it is a bad thread. I mean really bad. These guys are pretty quick on the ball and don't need me to keep bothering them all the time.

One of the things that "forum cops" do wrong most of the time is give out wrong info and also by posting in the thread (even with the right info) all they do is bump the thread back to the top. Trust me. That just makes it worse. Once people start doing it this way you will see that some of these threads will die out themselves or the mods will get it in due time. Well that is my two cents. Oh and if you wise guys say you want change back I will put Pezza back in the hole and give him the hose again.

I don't have a problem with people wanting to help. What I have had, and always will have, is a problem with the people wanting to help to help themselves. Never trust the people in the spotlight who openly help out in grandiose ways just to be seen. The ones who care, really care, don't give a damn whether or not they are seen because they're content to know that they helped and don't need any extraneous fame.

Which is why shows such as ABC's Extreme House Makeover (or whatever it is) infuriate me. People who really wanted to help and are good at heart don't need to have fame, because they simply don't want it. But that's going off topic, let me get back to what's currently going on at B.net. What started out as a lame attempt to get a one way ticket to modhood has turned into a kind of game for popularity. It's now fashionable to "help", not because people really care about the community, but because they care about their self-image. Having to sift through all the self-righteous "helping" is the primary reason I am beginning to dislike this forum in particular. It's not genuine, and it feels fake. Nobody wants to read that kind of thing day-in and day-out- it makes the forums lack personality if everyone is a pseudo-helpful clone who gives out pre-recoreded responses to everything suggested.
