Hope this theory of mine hasn't been discussed already. It's my theorys on Halo/Forerunners/Flood and so on.. Considering I haven't read the novels there's much background information I don't know.. The novels are so god damn hard to get if you live in Finland.

Halo - Weapon or Defense?

What if.. the Forerunners themselves had enemies.. enemies that were powerful enough to pose a real threat to the Forerunners.
And what if that enemy created the Flood.. or rather a "virus".. a viral infection that would create mutation amongst the Forerunners.. much like our biological-weapon.

The enemy (let's call them "the Zock" from now on).. The Zock created and released the Flood-virus upon the Forerunners.. The Forerunners then quickly realizing they were mutating into something which the couldn't kill or even control, they build Halo. A weapon to take out all sentient life.. that would be triggered if and when they thought it would be necessary to save the rest of the universe.
They also built it to, and I quote 343 Guilty Sparks - "The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood. Their survival as a race was dependent upon it. I am grateful to see that some of them survived to reproduce."

The Forerunners get attacked by a virus they can't cure.. So they build a weapon powerful enough to destroy everyone so that it wont be able to spread. They also build Halo like a laboratory were they can study the Flood in hopes of being able to cure it.. or find a way to reverse the mutation. The Forerunners "left behind" to study the Flood of course have to were protective suits (hence the "I suggest you upgrade to at least a Class Twelve combat skin. Your current model only scans as a Class Two, which is ill suited for this kind of work") so that it will take longer for the Flood to infect them.. in other words.. buying themselves time to search for a cure..

And think this. The Forerunners studying for a way to reverse the mutation.. Trying to cure a disease that plagued their kind.. what would be another word to describe their work..
I would phrase it this way.. just because it sound so god damn good!
- Some of the Forerunners stayed on Halo attempting to reclaim that which that they ones used to be..
"Reclaimer" anyone? Perhaps they started calling themselves that.

Master Chief is wearing a suit that resembles the "combat skin" that the Forerunners wore when trying their best NOT to get infected by the Flood. No wonder 343 Guilty Sparks talks to Master Chief as if he knew him.. or rather as if Master Chief knew him, and what Halo was designed for. (when 343 explains Halo to Master Chief and ends the sentence with "But you already knew that. I mean, how couldn't you?")

Then when the remaining Forerunners realize that there's not enough time, that the Flood will spread if nothing is done. They know what they have to do. They have to follow the "outbreak containment procedure".. Initiate Halo, and destroy all sentient life.
And that's why 343 doesn't understand why Master Chief would hesitate to do what he's already done. Why would Master Chief (the Reclaimer) hesitate to initiate Halo? He's already done it ones, and I'm guessing that he even asked 343 what HE would do it it was his choice ("Last time, you asked me, if it was my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed")

I will write and wonder more.. but until then..

Thoughts? Flaws?

Zock?

Anyway, it's obvious you haven't read the books - but it is a decent theory
