Yep, although the NVIDIA card may slow you down a bit.

Take the ATI, but the free H-L2 is single-player only - you'll have to pay extra for multiplayer. But if you haven't already bought Half-Life then you get VALVe's entire back catalogue for free through Steam.

256 MB DDR SDRAM memory

erm? how can you have ddr sdram?? there two totally different types, not a name of one

was it a typo? or is that what hp told you it was?

also, are they still selling computers with sdram? ive had mine about 2 1/2 years now and it came with 256mb ddr pc2700 ram, so if they are still selling sdram thats kinda of a rip off, isnt it?

http://www.steampowered.com

It's the only way you'll be able to play VALVe games online.

Because thats what it says on the front of the actual computer.

Actually, thinking about it, Steam is also how you get your free copy of Half-Life 2.

You need to upgrade your RAM as well. Halo recommends 512 MB of Ram. Also, the ATI radeon 9600XT is more better then the GeforceFX 5700. If you're willing to spend about 10 more dollars you can get a radeon 9800 pro because thats the standard gaming video card for todays game and HL2 and Doom3.

Open up your computer, see what type of ram it is, go to the store and ask for a 512mb stick of ram. Simple.

oh, ok.

Are you sure you wouldn't be better selling your old PC and buying a new one? I only ask because you don't seem too sure about how to go about it.

here is a link to a graphics card that doesnt suck and will play halo alot better than the ati9600 or that POS Geforce 5700 u were looking at. also it will make HL2 look awesome, and basically any other game u play on it.

http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_a380_ultratdh_myviv o_1.html

I own one, but plan on getting a Geforce 6800 ultra 512 MB in a month. now im not buying the 6800 because the A380 doesnt work good (it is awsome on call of duty, farcry ,battlefield vietnam,UT2004,planetside,CnC Generals, and last but not least my favorite Halo Combat Evolved), it is just the fact that Doom 3 is coming out and will support shader model 3.0 on Direct X 9.0c, and the only card able to use shader model 3.0 is the Geforce 6800 (sorry ATI fans). so unless you have 520 bucks (which i will after selling my used geforceFX 590ultra 256mb) i would suggest the leadtek A380,or another GeforceFX 5950ultra. as they are dropping in price and work GREAT. btw you should NEVER buy a pre-made system, they are put togather buy morons and not EVER supported well by their maker. Depending on where u live u should probably be able to find a local computer store that should have alot better PC's built to your needs for around 500-800 bucks with a good graphics card already installed. just make sure that the local company is a chamber of commerce member (as they are the most honest usually). Trust me im one of those honest local guys that builds sweet systems for anyone with the need and the cash, and i back up my builds with 100% go-to-yer-house-and -fix -it-tech-support (something that HP,compaq, dell, alienware, falconNW,or voodoo PC will NEVER do). So my suggestion to you is save your 130bucks and a little more to buy a whole new custom built system from a hard working local guy, and use the old HP for a fileserver or a download box.

I read that there's no point in getting the NVIDIA card, and to get the new ATI instead. Apart from being faster, there just won't be enough games supporting PS3.0 in the 18 months before the next ATI (probably support PS3.0) is out.

well the thing is I'm on a major budget cruch right now, buying the ATI 9600 XT is really pushing my budget limit, I mean I have and already beat halo on xbox but I want the awsome multiplayer that comes with the PC version. *Sigh*
