Subject: Should I get a GeForce 7600GS?

No.

I am trying to prepare my computer for Halo 2 Vista and a few other games so I want to know what GPU to get. Right now I am looking at the GeForce 7600GS but I want to know if anyone is having any problems with it before I buy it.

Yes, I have read reviews for it and it looks pretty good, I just want a few more opinions on it.

I am also looking for a good sound card, so if anyone knows a good one for under $100, please tell me.

Save up for a Geforce 8800.

By the time he saves up enough money for an 8800, it will be outdated and there will be better cards out there. Save up enough money for the next series of DirectX 10 cards.

Yeah, if all you have is an AGP slot, you want to save up for a PCI-e board. If you dont want to do that, then get the 7600. Equivalent cards for PCIe are much less expensive, though.

Just so you all know, the 8800 (and just about all of the next gen GPUs) is/will be PCI-e. PCI-e > AGP. You may want to upgrade to PCI-e.

^^^ Agreed. My current comp is AGP, I'm upgrading very soon, since AGP is quite a bit outdated. I'm upgrading everything except the hard drive, the optical drives, and the case. I'll be getting a 7600GT. I would say, if anything, upgrade your motherboard, if not your whole comp to PCI-e. My upgrade is only going to cost me just over $400. It doesn't cost a whole lot to upgrade.

Current system:
- Not sure about motherboard too lazy to reboot and look
- AMD Athlon XP 2400+
- 512 MB RAM (PC 2700)
- Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 4000 (I know, I know, don't laugh)
- Standard case power supply

Upgrades:
Motherboard
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2.0GHz
- pqi TURBO 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
- eVGA 256-P2-N554-AX Geforce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
- DYNAPOWER USA EP-45X.0562B ATX12V, Version 2.2 450W Power Supply 115/230 V UL

Again, just over $400, it's worth it. I suggest you do the same.
