SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Yeah, I remember that. I also remember reading what they converted the atmosphere into, but I can't really remember what it was. It may have been another user created theory.

I was playing through Halo 1 again and when I was in the library being led to the index by 343 Guilty Spark, I noticed something interesting.

Up to this point I always knew the Flood could attack you or take over your body. I know the Flood can use both living or nonliving bodies and control them. But apparently there is much about the Flood I still don't know.

The thing that made me want to post this topic is to see if anyone else noticed this.

In the library in Halo 1 we all know that Guilty Spark flies around muttering things to himself such as giggling and saying, "I am a genius!"

Well, he said something strange about the Flood that I had not heard before.

This is NOT an exact quote, but it is pretty close to what he said:
"Your suit should serve you well when the Flood decides to alter the atmosphere. My! You are a wise planner!"

Has anyone else noticed that line?

Can the Flood actually alter the atmosphere?

If the Flood can alter the atmosphere what impact does that have?

Does that mean they can make you turn into the Flood just by breathing Flood infested air?

evilcam, if you by any chance are able to recall where you saw what you read about the Flood being able to do that I'd love to check it out also.

Meanwhile, IF that is true that the Flood can modify the atmosphere and IF someone can become infected by the Flood just by breathing the air . . . . . well that really sucks!

That makes the situation even that much more hopeless. I thought the Flood already multiplied and spread pretty fast, but if they can do that it is more frightening and only the MC has a suit to protect him from breathing in Flood infected air.

It's the green mist stuff like in Halo 2. It makes it hard to breathe.

Spores isn't it?
You can see them coming out of the vents in Keyes, and also in H2.
Something like some of the flood start to release the spores, direct and non direct.
Direct being into a host, think it's part of their reproduction stage.

For all i know it might be what happens when any of them pop.

The lifecycle of the Flood begins at Infection form as a small, frail, gas-bloated creature that leaps upon a host and attempts to drive in three barbed tentacles (although the small spores that some Flood are seen to release are also used to either infect or incapacitate potential hosts, as 343 Guilty Spark explains over the din of The Library level in the first game).

they change oxygen into methane not..flood-gas humans cant breathe methane though so the die slowly NOTE grunts cant and they cant be infected by the flood so they'll be the only survivors and they wouldnt need masks

Grunts can be infected.

From Wikipedia.
If not of suitable size or sufficiently damaged to prevent use in combat the next stage of mutation occurs. The body becomes bloated and rotten. Smaller Infection forms grow within the ball of flesh, as it swells with gas and diseased innards. When the Carrier Form detects a suitable host, they swell and explode releasing Infection forms to continue the cycle.

From Wikipedia
Covenant Grunts, Jackals, and decayed combat forms are often used to serve as carrier forms.

There was also something on another site about the changes the flood make to the atmosphere being highly toxic and ammonium like, but seeing is it's just a game we shall never really know.

Does anyone think the Flood are "possibly" already on Earth? (In Halo, that is . . . not in real life in case anyone out there thought I meant for real). Hahahaha :P Teasing!

But seriously, if you look at the Halo 2 multiplayer maps, there are is one that takes place in Chicago and in room #3 there are some things that look like Flood in kind of a stasis chamber of some kind. I know Bungie usually seems to have a reason for everything. What if ONI actually brought a Flood sample back to Earth for study?

In the book Halo: The Flood, the Helljumpers tried to bring back one of their comrades who was fully taken over by the Flood, physically at least.

Maybe the Flood are already on Earth before we even begin Halo 3. :o

Ya got a good point there. Also, on every forerunner construction we have seen in the games, the flood were there. So, could they be in the Ark as well?

No. The Foundation map in Chicago is a testing facility for a robotic defense system that was scrapped. The "stasis chambers" you see are probably just components of the machines. T.A.R.D.S. Such a funny acronym.

Wikipedia is actually wrong with that grunts are used as carrier forms. carrier forms are really just old combat forms that have been badly mangled and now just incubate infection forms. grunts however would be just a food sort not hosts.
i would assume that if they alter the atmosphere and you breath that atmosphere then yes you are likely to be taken over by the tiny spores in the air. but i'm assuming so don't take my word on that part

Enamberclad, I see your point and I thought that as well, however the same containment tanks exist on the Halo itself and a multiplayer level named Lockout. I think that is the name of the level. On the lower parts of the level, the same containment tanks are there with Flood looking creatures in them, and one of the containment doors has been broken open and there isn't anything inside of the one. This is on the Halo. I think the robotic testing facility that is abandoned on Foundation was "possibly" being used for "top secret" research or something as well or after it was abandoned. Maybe ONI came in and took over the place to use it under the disguise of being still abandoned. I don't know, it is just a thought. :)

I just came to the realization that seeing that this is just a game, we have no actual proof about anything. You could be right, as could I.

Well I think they should've gone ahead to Earth anyway. No matter what would have happened once they enter Earth's atmosphere, the Flood die instantly. They cannot adapt to our ever changing enviornment on Earth. Even if they could get an atmosphere changer form in, it would decapitate. So the Flood can't live on Earth. But on High Charity you can see different forms of Flood you don't noramlly see every day. The Brain Forms drive the Pelicans, the Enviornment Changers, Gravemind, and a special surprise for legendary players only, Invisible Flood!!!

Mega Grunt:

Why do you think the Flood could not live on Earth???

The Halo has an almost identical atmosphere and environment to Earth and the Flood ran around on the Halo just fine. I didn't see any Flood just die as soon as they reached the surface of the Halo. They were just fine.

I'm not sure why you think they would die if they came to Earth, please explain what you mean.

And what did you mean when you said, "Even if they could get an atmosphere changer form in, it would decapitate." ??? I didn't exactly understand what exactly is an "atmosphere changer form." What do those look like? And what do you mean by it would "decapitate?" And what would it be decapitating or being decapitated by and why?

Carbon

when a body decayes it releases carbon
if the flood were to inhabate a planet they would consume so much food, basicly transforming all living things into zombies it would releast too much carbon for the 'carbon cycle' to sift through
the carbon would suffocate us, although we are carbon based lifeforms and there is a large amount of carbon in the air, our lungs cant prosess carbon efficiently, if theres too much we cant breath and nether will the plants causing loss of oxygen.
bingo altered atmosphere

  • 12.29.2006 10:59 PM PDT

Play High Charity and look on the walls. Also our enviornment changes so much, while Halo's does not. Because ours changes the Flood cannot adapt as fast, well not fast enough. Then all of a sudden Bam dead.

To play or not to play....

My guess is they Flood will try to alter the atmosphere to conditions that suit the Flood more comfortably. These conditions can be hinted at by playing through Halo 2 as you often see dark areas with a kind of Flood fog.

Right at the end of Halo 2 you see the Gravemind on High Charity with spores floating around in the air. This air seems to be thick and not so clean.

My guess is that the Flood will alter the atmosphere so these spores can survive longer and simply float around and infect. This will also have the effect of making life harder for the Floods enemies and weaken them. So making infection easier.

In short the answer is YES you may be able to be infected by breathing the air. However my best guess is that the air needs to contain Flood spores.

You can see the thick almost greenish air in Halo CE as well. As you wander around you often see the vents filled with green pea soup looking air. My guess is this is what the Flood want to change the atmosphere into.

thats it they chage the atmosphereto methane which is TOXIC to what i meant was that grunts could breathe methane and that it would not kill them like other species

The Halo destroys all sentient life to starve out the Flood. I am curious what exactly the Flood CAN take over in regards to "sentient" life. In the Halo graphic novel, it appeared as if the Flood took over all the animals that were being kept on the Covenant ship. It is in the first story of the graphic novel. So if the Flood came to Earth would they possess dogs, cats, cows, rabbits, and so on? We would have Flood Zombie-fied animals everywhere!? :o Hehe
