Subject: Literacy Test

I know this is a crazy idea, but it's plausible. Plus, I get so tired of seeing people who completely butcher the English Language.

Why not add a literacy test to the sign-up process? Have people type a five-sentence story about something, and not tell them it's a literacy test, so they won't cheat to do well. They type it up, it gets processed, if it's good enough, they can join, if not, they're denied.

I'm semi-serious with this idea. I know it's sort of funny, but again, it's plausible. I see myself in a state of awe at times. When I first joined, I read through all the rules, and I remember seeing one indicating that you must use the English language properly, yet I rarely see it happen. So this could be a way to enforce that rule. Because, I don't know about you, but I like that rule.

Discuss.

Many people sign up so they can view their stats or join a chapter. If they just want to do that, then they shouldn't be required to take an "exam" if they are only going to make one or two posts per month.

We had this in Australia many years ago, we called it the "Dictation Test". It was part of the "White Australia Policy".

It wasn't cool...

That would reduce the Bungie.net population to about 7%. Whether that's good or not, I can't decide. And the "rule" you're talking about isn't actually a rule, it's a suggestion.

it would be good, maybe proper (or at least to some extent) grammar should be a rule.
I mean i have nothing against someone saying 1337 once in a while, or maybe a 'u' now and then, but for da ppl dat talk lik dis consistently, a warning may be a good idea.

a test no. A loose rule? yes.

I say no to this idea. You are forgetting that most people on bungie, the english language is not their primary one. You have to remember, Bungie is not only popular in the states. Not to mention the bungie.net population would drop dramatically.

Literacy test: No. Would you like it if you were barred from something because your knowledge or practice of something was not up to the standards of certain people? Really, if you set up rediculously high standards, then you alienate people who can type legibly, even if some of the words are not spelled out completely, or it is missing punctuation. If you set up low standards, then you end up not allowing people who would not be payed attention to anyways, which really wouldn't matter, since in both cases the member has to work harder in order to make a decent thread.

Rule for grammar: Nah. If it's legible, it shouldn't matter. If it isn't legible, then ignore it (or send the member a kind PM stating they may want to fix up their English so that their post is readable).

I really doubt that most people on Bungie.net speak a language other than English as a first language. And if there are that many people who speak English as a second language, I haven't noticed, so I doubt they would be bothered by the test.

But I just don't see this being very worthwhile. If a member doesn't write well enough to be understood, then I see no reason to read what they have to say. I would bet that many members feel the same way. So you can make it so they might as well not even be here. But I think others members might want to read that person's post. If they want to do that, then I see no reason to stop them.

Aside from that, how would the test even work? It would have to be automated. So where would you draw the line for what is acceptable?

You're forgetting the fact that English is the language of Bungie.net. Notice how topics in Spanish, or German, or Japanese, et cetera, get locked?

Call me a hardass, but if you want to be on an English website, you have to speak English.

Mattblu, you should know that this suggestion would never be implemented, yet you suggest it nonetheless. Why?

Besides, 99% of all humour on this website would dissipate if the illiterate portion of the community vanished.

*whispers* And psyched, in a rare appearance on this forum lately, is attempting to sink a good reply here. He's about thirty yards away. This will be a tough one. He takes the shot, Let's see, it begins off serious, a little scloding. Wait. Here it goes, its hit the break and its going into humor fast. Psyched is watching nervously... and he sinks it. Wonderful job, ladies and gentleman, the man's a pro.*golf claps abound*

and if that didn't help- I agree with psyched's opinion.

EDIT: English grammar can be quite a -blam!- for people who don't speak English as their first language. Every now and then I run into couple of words that make me go: AWAHHH? SPELLZ?

So then I got gud enlgush. People shouldn't be constricted by their stupid language habits, but they should be scolded until they fix them (as what usually happens when someone breaks out a 'u b gehy arberta' fest).

Those who do not speak english on this website do not have to speak english. The only reason why you say this is because you speak english, and you believe others should be like you and speak it. This goes especially to those in which english is not their primary language.

Sorry, M3, but you just made a fool of yourself. JAF is not only saying that because he speaks english. In fact his primary language isn't english. So if he can become a moderator, anyone who doesn't speak english should be able to learn it enough to type it, or create a group just for talking in the language they are used to.

I don't go on German websites and demand they let me speak english (I bet you would be against me doing that). Therefore, if you come onto an english website, you should be expected to speak english.

I wasn't talking to JAF. I was talking to Matt. The point I was trying to get across, is that english is not the only language. Nor should it be treated like a one sided language on this site. Doing this Literacy test would halt alot of people from coming to this site. Since Bungie isn't just an english based company. Nor are its video games primarily based towards those that speak english. I am sorry about the misunderstanding Rainman.

Also Matt, have you even thought about who or why people really type like that? Most people who do it are spammers. Some d it because of other reasons, but it's the majority that do it because they are "having fun and are cool".
