Read about the Forgotten Spartan I Program
Butane: To protect the world from devastation!
sir_brilliant: To unite all people within our nation!
Rainman89: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
sir_brilliant: To extend out reach to the stars above!
SpaceGhostFlyer: Jessie!
Butane: James!
sir_brilliant: Team Rocket blasting off at the speed of light
Butane: Surrender now or prepare to fight
sir_brilliant: Meowth, that's right!

My apologies, M3. Thanks for being so understanding. It must have taken a lot to not flame me for that.

I agree that the literacy test is a bad idea, but I think that making people speak english here is perfectly acceptable.

I am also sorry for the misunderstanding.

As I am the overlord, I get to make up words as a see fit, if the situation calls for it.

Is 'stupider' one of the words you scrubbed from the filter, Achronos? :)

What bothers me, is not the fact certain people can't spell, but because they don't even try.
Let's say, someone who doesn't have good grip on the English language makes a post. it's full of grammatical errors, but he apologizes for it. He tried. I don't see why that's so bad. Hell, we can even be nice to the lad, and help him correct his mistakes.

On the other hand we have little Timmy. Timmy speaks English. His mother is English, his father is American, and his grandfather is Australian. Unfortunately Timmy, is lazy. Thus, he makes posts like this: LIEK LAL, I TyPe lik tis BEcausE im Lzy.

EDIT: whoops, made actual mistakes. :P

Oh, on the contrary, I didn't find your post rude at all. Don't worry about it, stuff like this happens to the best of us.

And as of what anybody else says, I am sticking to what I said before. The literacy test is a bad idea, hell, I even have to use dictionary.com sometimes.

I understand that. I hate it when people, either due to lethargy or just pure ignorance, obliviously spell and easy word incorrectly.

Yes, there is the 1337 sp33k, which drives me up the wall, because I can barely understand it. It's when people make posts like:

"did u notis how jhonson dos dat tihng at teh edn of halo 2 wen he tels off tarataus adn da ohter broots in teh room dat was lyk way awsum!11!!1"

No grammar, no sense of correct spelling nor purpose, it's just mindless, annoying rambling. And I have actually seen posts like that. Travel to Halo 3, New Mombasa or The Flood. That's why I like The Underground and The Septagon. Slow, but smart.

But it's the prior example I'm yearning to eliminate. Pure oblivious, negligent ignorance. I saw a post yesterday, not that long, shorter than yours I'm quoting, JaF, and it had about twelve obvious spelling errors in there. It was spelled like "Jhonson", "profet", "kan", "dialaugue", "dought", real obvious things that everyone should know.

One of the reasons I'd like to eliminate this is because I stand behind the belief that Bungie.net is a very intelligent, well-educated website. I like to believe that it's not your MySpace, or places like that which are coated with idiocy, like to think it's a very nourishing place to be for intelligence, and I want for it to give off that appearance, because that's what I see. Unfortunately, it's hard to show that attribute when it is blocked by... well, Halo 3, New Mombasa and The Flood, which the nature of speaking is rather prominent.

I agree. That is incredibly annoying to me. But if I can understand what the message is, I'm willing to look past the poor spelling. If I can't understand, then I ignore the person. If the person wants to be heard, but he is too lazy to type legible English, then I think not being heard is punishment enough. Either that member will learn to type something the rest of us can comprehend, or he will leave. Either way, you have what you want in the end.

Surely someone somewhere here in the Septagon has said something like:

"A truly intelligent post is measured by its message, not by its spelling."

Actually it sounds like something Recon might say.

Oh, and another thing. Stop sucking up to the moderators and Bungie itself. They're not going to give you a job, and idolizing people you've never met or who have never done anything that worthwhile is absolutely pointless.

Huh zuh buh duh what?

If there is nobody intelligent left on Earth, why should we trust your plan to be a good idea?

I'm a but more of a stickler for perfection. I don't mind a typo here and there, and I despise people who go "U MADE A TYPOZ0RS! U SUCK!" over something like that, but it's total butchering that bugs me. Even if I can understand it, it's ugly, and it looks stupid.

But people at first glance only look at what they can see. And if the entire "society" is filled with that sort of spelling, people will be drawn away, not looking to see the better qualities.

No, that doesn't take balls. Balls would have involved politley PMing the member he was have been talking about. That, where no one would have seen his actions, would have been tru balls.

But like I said, if you don't like it, then you should ignore it. Let me take the point Aku tried to make a while ago. Just because you aren't interested in reading something because it has poor spelling doesn't mean somebody else isn't. I don't like the Halo 3 Forum, or the Flood, or New Mombasa either, but I simply don't post in them.

But people at first glance only look at what they can see. And if the entire "society" is filled with that sort of spelling, people will be drawn away, not looking to see the better qualities.

Doesn't the same society we are a part of try to live by the saying "never judge a book by its cover?"

Our society wouldn't be looking at Bungie.net to decide what the website is like, and to join, now would they?

What I'm trying to say is that I'm looking through the eyes of the average person trying to get a general idea of what this website is like. And in most people, it's nature to judge it by what they can only see at first glance, so if they saw something really ugly, I.E., poorly constructed language, they would be drawn away, not join, and chances are, make the general assumption that the whole website was like that.

Would they also be looking at just the Halo 3 Forum?

What I'm trying to say is that I'm looking through the eyes of the average person trying to get a general idea of what this website is like. 1) Isn't the average person the same person that is currently posting? So wouldn't the average user not actually mind?

2) What intelligent person would make a judgement based on their experience in one thread, or one forum?

3) What if some people felt that the Septagon was too smart for them to have a discussion in? Should we then put a cap on the I.Q. level allowed to post?
