Personally I do no like the xbox microphone. All of the voices come out mechanical and unclear. If would personaly use another program via computer, such as ventrilo, as another form of communication. That was only if I was playing with my friends. I would gladly give up the full screen for three of my best friends. If I just played with them as a team over XBL it would still be fun, but I would feel way too isolated. And if a person can play with 4 players on XB connect there is no reason why halo 2 shouldn't be able to do it. Is anyone else out there with me about the feeling about the xbl mic?

Edit:
I didn't mean that we do not need a microphone. Communication is key to winning CTF and the new single CTF. Epecially if the levels become more vast, there will be no idea what anyone is doing without communication.

I hope Bungie reads this too. While 1/4 don't care about guests at all, they're not really going to mind having the feautre either.

The mic is deinitely a step up over a KB and think it will be great for communicated to those not with you, but yes I prefer being able to talk to the person right next to me too.

If the voices came out mechanical and unclear, they were probably using a voice mask. When people don't use voice masks, the sound is very clear.

Interesting, if this proves correct I maybe have to invalidate my first post about the mic.

I just might blow my brains out. I have a brother and it would seriously suck if we had to TAKE TURNS!!! But, I believe bungie will make at least one guest available. After all, they let you do it in Mech Assault and Unreal Tournement, why not the more aadvanced Halo 2?

It would eb great to have three guests but the problems are technical. Xbox live is available to anyone with broadband and so the options available have to work with the worst compatible connection.

Lots of live games have 1 guest (correct me if i'm wrong) but 3 guests means your getting just one quarter of the bandwidth you could get in One player.

The average broadband connection in the UK is probably 512k, with a 256k upload. Which provides good play for one or two people. Having four people sharing that connection would only give them 56k each.. Lag would become a real problem.

I have no real knowledge of the exact limitations but i'd imagine 4 player lagless on one broadband connection would be tecnically very difficult. Bungie may surprise me but i think 1 guest is likely but 3 isn't.

Of course, if people had upload speeds such as 1meg this problem wouldn't exist. It is perhaps possible that the game could sense your upload speed and then limit you to none, one or three guest depending on your connection.

Anyway, i think bandwidth rather than FPS is the problem.

Read one of my other posts on the first page as I go into how the networking works. The lag is significantly better when you clump more people onto your box (mean guests = less lag). If you don't believe my words go play on XBC a little and you will there is a huge difference when its 4 on 4 with two boxes instead of 2 on 2 with four boxes. The lag much favors the 4 on 4 despite there being more players because of the less number of xboxes talking.

Since I only talked about the host side in that previous post, and while the host side is really the clincher, I'll talk a little about the client side. The average numbers you gave were 512 down and 256 up right? Earlier the 128k number was tossed around for what a host needs to get out to each box. Well first of all thats each box, not each player. If a box has 4 players the data sent to it is not split. A single packet can be sent and the local xbox can figure how it applies to everyone from there.

As for the upload of a client, I don't know what the specific number is that is idea, but the amount of upload for a client is much less than what the host needs to do. Your number was a tiny bit off 256/4 = 64. On a client side upload this is definitely sufficient. This is not to mention that the host will get all these 4 players packets at the same time which makes things easier on it.

We could all sit here and talk about theory of lag, but the best demonstration is to go play XBC and compare the differences. The difference is phenominal.

Good post ;)

I have to say, i don't know much about lag, i just assumed that the more players on one xbox then the less the bandwidth and hence more lag.

But your explanation makes a lot of sense, even though bandwidth must surely be an issue.

If it it technically possible then 3 guest would be a very good feature. (not all of them have to be guest, i mean you could have 3 guys with gamertags and headsets).

Anyway, that would absolutely rock and would combine the best bit about xbox live and the best bit about LAN. 16 player LAN''s are hard to organise yet online gaming doesn't allways have the same fun as sitting next to your team mate. This way halo 2 can have maxiumum players and you can sit with your team mates.

On a side issue, wouldn't it be unfair to have guests on a free for all? as you could look at each others screens and in theory get more kills than the other players online? i think guest should be limited to being on your team.

hey could somebody tell me which games on XBOX live DO support guests? i dont think there are very many . . but pleas list them if u know. considering that there arent very many, i highly doubt HALO 2 will have guest support. HALO 2 is suppossed to be a whole new can of worms though . . . so who knows . . . well just have to wait until NOVEMBER . . . .*sigh*

does it create more lag, i would think 4 xboxes of 4 would be less laggy than 16 xboxes of 1 on Xbox Live!

Not at all, It's not a smart idea, you lose profits because people can just go to people's house to play on live. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't even have 1 guest. A game this expected to be this large, would YOU risk losing the profit with competition like Sony or Nintendo?

I respect Nintendo more than my mom after the Zelda series. But they made some bad decisions and is really just microsft and sony competing for the world now

I'm with Shishka. Most of the games that ive played with a guest is kinda stupid i like seing everything. Once you get on live and your playing you wont even care about whos sitting next to you.
