I'm guessing he did

And how can groups be a small part of the site when some have hundreds of members. A couple even have thousands

I should create a thread. "Do you hate people complaining about inconveniences?" How hard is it to hit the close button? I'm guessing that that would take a lot less effort then typing your two paragraph rant.

Perfectly said.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I love them because they make me feel special.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

So..you made a group about how much the groups suck?

What an ass...you're just pissed because your group is three months old and you only have 31 members.

I hate when i get those messages but i love sending them, i honestly dont think the classifeds work because people are more intrested in advertising than joining.

Bingo.

I've been here two years and haven't once clicked on the Classifieds link. It's good in theory and keeps people from spamming the regular forums with group and clan invites, but that's about it.

As far as people sending me group invites? I don't mind them, but if people really want to peak my interest at least make the PM personal. Some form letter you sent to 100 other people isn't going to attract much attention.

Exactly, it's not like they're asking you for your organs. All they're doing is asking you to click on a damn link that says "Join Group" and type some boxes full of text. Seriously, does it hurt that bad to get PMs?

Besides, if people are dedicated to a group enough to actually send the recruitment messages that should count as something. As far as I see it the only people who talk badly about PM ads are people who think way too highly of themselves (much like me!).

Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Just how else are you going to have a group get enough members to be a good group (that is, active members)? Almost all of the groups I have joined I was notified of through either friends or private messages.

Sure, just getting "I've been watching you on the forums and I have noticed you are an active member, come join my Arbiter group" is incredibly annoying, but it's not like my day is ruined. If I get a group invite, I shoot something back to the member, asking that member why I would enjoy the group. If the member can give me a reasonable answer, I give the group a little trial.

I've sent one or two invitations in my days here, and while I don't like sending them, and the reasons why are long and personal, the invites I sent were personal messages that were actually for those specific members. And they worked. So maybe what you should be hating is template invites, not group invites as a whole. Invites can actually be good things.

You know how you handle recruiters? Ignore them. I get a new message, i read it, i move on. If they send me 2 i send them back a message that they just sent me another recruitment message, and they usually stop sending them for a week or two.

In all honesty, we all hate recruiters, but getting pissy about them is like yelling and screaming at a telemarketer because he called you to do his job. Recruiters are just doing their job, not trying to piss you off.

i think group invites are fine. They make me feel special ;-)
But only if they at least have my name in it, or some other personalization.

If i get an invite saying Hi, you! I usually replay with a rant, and dont join.
But if its got some personalization, i at least look at the group before i join/decline.

I remember 1 time i got a group invite saying
Hi join my group, we're called *insert name*

we spent about 2 weeks corresponding with me trying to get him to send a proper invite.
After all that, it turned out i was already in the group :-)

I've never actually joined groups sent in PMs from people I don't know. Every one has been a mini "anything halo" group with even less to offer. The good groups don't send mass invites. I don't send invites unless someone says "all my groups suck". This has happened exactly once to date.

  • 12.26.2006 3:27 PM PDT

When i send group invites i always type them out of love.

Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

I don't mind them.
They can be a great source of interesting groups. I've got involved with plenty via PMing. Perhaps there could be a uber feature that allows one to set their profile as someone who is disinclined to accept such mail so that when group advertisers go around they will know who will want the mail and who won't...?

I don't mind them.

Telemarketers are different to Group PM's because they actually ring you while you could be very busy or when you could be expecting a phone call.
