We all know that the needler's melee was horrible in Halo.
We all know that there will be combos in Halo 2.
Assuming Bungie is, in fact, reading the forums, I'd like to put forth an idea I've had since I first played Halo and used the needler:
Don't give the needler a combo. I've always thought that since you end up smacking your opponent with the needle side of the needler, that if you connect, all the needles should stick into your opponent and after a second or two, explode.
Now, I think this is a good idea for a few reasons:
1. As there is a balance for every aspect of the arsenal, there is balance here. If you hit your enemy, you lose a whole clip of ammunition, requiring you to reload. This would be in addition to having a slow melee time, making it harder to connect AND requiring a couple seconds on the tail end to reload. (not mentioning the danger in meleeing away your last clip of ammo, if it were to come down to that.)
2. This gives at least one weapon in the arsenal some ability to contend with the plasma sword, having a one-hit kill capability.
3. Since there would be no combo, weapons that DO have a combo have a chance in melee against the needler, since you would just need to watch out for that one power swing.
I'm sure there can be other balances for this, but this is all I can come up with at the moment. Feel free to add your own ideas for other weapons, too.
Cheers.
