"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something, but I can't accept not trying." - M. Jordan

I'm at the part where Keyes has just been promoted to captain. He just decided to replace Jaggers with Lovells because Jaggers was such a wuss during the battle at Signa Octanus IV. Keyes is really suspicious of everything the UNSC is doing because Admiral Stanforth won't tell him anything.

Keyes notices that the UNSC is guarding the inner colonies with the stongest ships but doesn't know why. So what is the reason why? What is on Sigma Octamus? Why did the covanant run after getting owned by keyes instead of fight till the death?

ALso, did Lovell dunp a high ranking officers daughter. I mean, Keyes does wonder why he get demoted so badly after he see's Lovell had an incident with a woman possibly related to an Admiral.

I LOVE this book, but it seems like there is so many fishy things going on, I want to know does it all tie together.

I think all colonies were under heavy protection when Sigma Octanus was attacked.

I am...whimsical today.

If you have just got to the promotion part, then some of your questions will be answered late in the book. Therefore the following post will contain SPOILERS for you.

The big cruisers were getting pulled back to guard the inner colonies because they were seen as the most important. Planets such as Reach merited more defense than the outer colonies. So many ships turned up to Sigma Octanus because moral in the fleet was low. The UNSC was getting desperate to gain a victory against the Covenant. Bad moral can be as lethal to a ship as a missile.

The Covenant ran because they were meeting re-enforcements, and were only there to initiate the ground assault.

The reasons for Lovell's demotion are not really spelled out, but we can infer that it is due to an incident with Admiral Whitcomb(?)'s daughter.

This answer one of your questions.

When THe Covie ships retreat the captain orders a scan of the planet surface and discovers a massive amount of dropships...an invasion. They were just there to send in the invasion force.

Yeah I knew that they dropped ground forces as I read a little further before I fell asleep. It was Admiral Gerov's daughter to the other post.

Yeah I think I will just read it, I change my mind, I was just tired and knew I could have finished it early this morning. I will be back, this book is really cool.
