Subject: Re-tooling the freedoms of blacklisted users?

When a user is blacklisted from the forums, as of now they cannot view the forums, or use the game viewer in the stats pages. But i propose that the blacklisted users cannot access groups, or even the news topics and other announcements on the front page. And my other big idea for something to take away, is the personal message system, i will explain why later. What the group-blacklisting will do is cut down on the spamming, because the usual spammers at bungie have their own little groups, which they would be unable to access, and they could not communicate to their fellow spammers to make their new accounts for their spam-a-balooza. And if they really wanted to, they would have to make new accounts and re-join all of their groups, which would at least slow them down. The viewing of news stories and other announcements would be taken away because this user is banned from the site, which means they obviously did something bad, and they should be punished for this.
I would take away the personal message system for the same reason as the groups, so they could not communicate with others and tell them their new spam accounts and such. As i am writing this though, i am beginning to have my own doubts about banning their personal messaging, so i will let you guy’s decide about that one.

Do you think these are good ideas, even with slight altercations?

I feel it would keep the forums more spam-free and make bungie.net a happier place :-)

Snakedude, that wasn't very nice. :(

I say they are disallowed from ANY forum area of Bungie.net, including groups, but the main page is just.. Well, imagine if you messed up once, and got a 7 day blacklist, and then they announced Halo 3. How angry would you be? I mean, that's just evil.

But the forums and groups, yeah. Let's just not let them exist there.

wow, i didnt think about that kind of thing. Mabye a solution to that would be: if you are banned for 90 days or more, you cannot view the news stories or announcements, because you'd have had to have done something pretty freaking bad to get that big of a ban

Well..
Then you just log out and can view (not post) in the main forums, and see the front page just fine. Not allowing people to view the news isn't a punishment, it's just silly.

If anything they should have more freedoms, simply because stopping them from looking at the forums when they're blacklisted is pointless (because they can just sign out).

Sure, but they can't post, TGP. That's the point, isn't it? I could care less if they read threads or see the front page, but when they're blacklisted, they truly should be blacklisted from posting anywhere.

I know. That's why I said they should be able to look at the forums.

I saw that.. But you didn't say anything about the other aspects, such as preventing them from posting in groups. I was hoping you'd comment on that, but meh, that's ok. :P

The group thing isn't a good idea. Group administrators are supposed to have 100% control over the group, that's why moderators don't have any power there (unless the admin. gives it to them). If a ban from the public forums also means a ban from the group forums, that power is effectively put in the all of the moderators' hands since their actions also affect the groups.

You say tomato; I say potato.

Until a blacklist includes getting mualled by an 8 foot gorilla that also frames you for treason against the government, spammers will not take it seriously.

Moderaters have no power in groups and it should stay that way. Just because you are not acceptable in the main forums, that doesn't mean you are not acceptable in certain groups.

Just throwing this out there, couldn't Bungie track the IP address and ban the address insead of the user, that would give a definate line with no loopholes, or so I think. Just leave News accessable

My gamertag is SHADOWRIDERJP.

Not all blacklisted users plan "spam attacks." TKD Tormentor, I am pretty sure you made this topic because of what you saw in Teh L9. That thread you saw there was made by GhostmasterX.

All of us hated that plan, including L8te Runnr. J4LR, (L8te's new group) was made so himself and friends could talk. Some people don't have Xbox Live so groups are a good option. The people who would make the "spam attacks" anyway would just make alts. Unless the current blacklist system is overhauled to ban and/or trace someone's IP address this would not stop anyone.

Nah, those don't work. IP's are constantly changing. Actually I just checked mine, and yeah, it's new.

The reason is because there are Static and Dynamic IP's. The Static ones are the ones that don't change, but the majority of the users have Dynamic.

A better plan would be a MAC address ban. That bans the hardware that's being used (say, a router or your network adapter.) But whether or not that's possible remains to be seen.

Achronos said he's planning on doing something to make bans more.......effective....

Not let permabanned members post in groups??? :O

Then where would I be able to still see Twitch post?

SB-117

If they're banned from Personal Messages how will they be able to ask for a further explanation on why they were banned?

For example. Someone gets on the forums and doesn't read the rules, then they post about how much they despise certain middle-eastern countries in the Septagon. Upon seeing "Operation cancelled due to Blacklisting", they are curious as to why they have been silenced thus.

They would PM the guy who banned them and demand/ask that they elaborate. If they couldn't send the aforementioned PM, they may decide (on their own) that the blacklist was unfair. This leads to them creating a duplicate account and insisting that it is (infact) Shishka who is the pegboy.

Basically, my point is PMs seem to help clarify wrongdoings and teach ignorant people the error of their ways... most of the time. Taking them away would be rather craptacular.

As for banning from groups, I don't think that is necessary. People can just go on MSN, or create a forum of their own to say "OMG guyz, i got band so my new account is 'PH4ARTEHSPAMZ', dey wil fink twice b4 baning me agen! lolz!".

But if you ban the hard drive, you have to think about things like brothers using the same computer, but on difrent bungie accounts, if one gets baned, they both get the hammer.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

I just say, if they are blacklisted. All forms of site communication needs to be terminated for them until the blacklisting is over. If they try to access their groups, PM system, main forums or even access their profile, it should all be locked.

Letting them see the main page and view the stories isn't really something you can lock. Neither is simply viewing the main forums actually. If you don't sign in then you can see the threads and the posts in the main forum whenever you want. You just can't post.

You forget that groups are not directly affiliated with forum rules, and therefore have different rules. Group blacklisting is at the discretion of the governing body. If one is blacklisted from the public forums, that is the only place where the blacklisting should be enforced.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

Yeah, lets take away all thier Bungie.net access and thier first born son, and while we're at it, how about we send them an invitation to please feel free to circumvent the blacklisting by creating a new account.

Any decent member is going to serve out their BL and just view b.net by signing out. Spammers and the like are just going to create new accounts.

Everything is fine, please move along.

maybe an option to ban from groups as well as the public for moderators.

Basiaclly, if its not an extreme blacklist, don't ban them from the groups.

If it is, ban em from the groups

  • 01.03.2007 1:52 PM PDT

Nah, I don't really think banning them from group activities is acceptable. That's going a little too extreme. Am I right that they cannot view their stats and games if they have a linked gamertag? That and not being able to post is enough. And like TGP said, it is kinda funny that you can't view the main forums if you are blacklisted and signed in, but all you have to do to view them is sign out. Can it not be made that you can see them if blacklisted, just not post or is that taking away from their punishment?
