I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

Eh, Bungie Groups are managed by members. I think this would undermine the point of groups, if group admins couldn't even choose who's in their groups.

Obivously my idea of spam is narrower than others. No matter. Suppose that's not really the issue here.

I think what he meant was give group leaders an option in their settings to auto-blacklist people who try to join their group that are/have been blacklisted on Bnet. These group leaders do not have to turn this option on, and maybe even give them an ability to set exceptions for individual members in case one of their current members screws up and gets blacklisted.

If anything they should have more freedoms, simply because stopping them from looking at the forums when they're blacklisted is pointless (because they can just sign out).

Nah keep that bit, it's not like it should be made easier for BLed people, all those little things make it not worth being BLed

Biggest punishment of being BLed, IMO, is and always will be the inability to post on the forums.

I've been a moderator for a few forums before, and even an admin for a short while, and I can tell you that not being able to post is what banned, restricted, blacklisted, or whatever else you wanna call it users whine about the most.

Got many an email and PM regarding that. So annoying. Some of them make up the craziest and funniest excuses. I could almost make my own version of the Whaaambulance from that crap.

As someone stated earlier, they could just sign out and would then be able to read the forums and what-not.

If Achronos were smart (which he is), okay. If he were smarter, then he'd have it set a cookie when you get banned, and a hard to find one (as in pretend that it didn't originate from Bungie.net or something). So that even after a user signs out, the cookie acts as a flag to show that the user is still banned. Therefore signing out would then not help after being banned.

Wouldn't be hard to implement.
Of course, the smarter ones would just delete all their cookies or something, but not everyone would think of this.

Yeah about that, during the multiple times that I have been banned I've never deleted the cookies, so I can't speak from my own experience, but wouldn't it make more sense that the smarter people would look for just the bungie cookie and delete it manually? While the lazy/slow people just pressing delete all cookies in their web browser.

It's possible to make a cookie hidden, in such that though it originated from Bungie.net - while going through your list of cookies - it will not show as being from Bungie.net.

Therefore, they either don't find it and end up being screwed, or just take the cheap and easy method and delete all their cookies. (Which might I mention many people will reluctant to do, most people don't know their passwords and what-not and deleting all their cookies would screw them over.)

They do have a program similar to that called the Dissembodied Soul. It bans alternate accounts for three days if you don't clear your cookies before you try and sign in.

I hereby propose the perfect bannage system.

B.net tracks every .NET login, and every IP it is used on.

Any .NET profile that logs in on those IP's are then tagged as possible duplicate accounts.

When the primary .Net profile gets banned, possible duplicate accounts are watched for increased activity, in addition to any new .NET accounts that are created on the IP's most used by the primary account.

If any jump in activity is detected, the primary and duplicate accounts get deleted.

Multiple account bannings on particular IP's gets the IP's banned permamently.

In addition to the cookie scanning program.

Banning IP's is a dumb idea since IP's change all the time

It's really not that hard to get your IP changed. Get a new modem, done. Alot of people have the modem provided by their ISP, and all they have to do is turn it in say it's not working and bam, new modem new IP. And that's just for the simple-minded ones.

Alot of people have static IPs, it keeps changing.

Or if you know a little something about computers, use a proxy.

IP bannings work for maybe 12 year old kids that are constantly breaking the rules, but any other user with a brain and wants to keep posting/spamming, they can get around it in little time.

Besides, there are instances where multiple Bnet users have to use the same computer. Say you have siblings (man this is starting to sound like a whaaambulance excerpt). You're a respectable community member, you post and mind your business and have fun, trying to follow the rules. Then a little brother or sister comes on their account and starts being an asshat, gets blacklisted. Maybe they keep doing it, end up getting IP banned. Then you can't use your account, which has done nothing wrong.

Also, public libraries. Not every Bnet user owns a computer, some use public access computers to stay current on the Bungie universe. Some random idiot likes to spam and gets IP banned on the computer you usually use and your account gets hit too. Not fair is it?

IP banning is one way to help, but there are plenty of ways around it and it won't do as much good as many of you seem to think.

The Joyeuse IP Formula

I do agree with the personal messaging system. But, not everyone is blacklisted for spamming. What if the blacklisted user would like to PM the moderator in question about the blacklisting? You could make it to temporarily allow the user to PM moderators, but it would envolve tedious and complicated coding to figure that one out.

Just throwing this out there, couldn't Bungie track the IP address and ban the address insead of the user, that would give a definate line with no loopholes, or so I think. Just leave News accessable

But, if you ban the IP address, then you cannot even see Bungie.net.

That's horrible!

I use a shared computer, other people use b.net (though not as frequently as I do) on this thing! That doesn't mean I should get banned for that!
