Ah, look at the lonely people...

Yeah. If you've read, Bungie will pass out invites to Bungie community members who are, quote, "active, supportive members". Does anyone else see this as an attempt by Bungie to get people to act more mature within the forums?

I see it this way, "You be a good member on the forums, act mature and all that, and you may get invited to the Halo 3 Alpha."

Personally, I think it'll work, to a degree; after the alpha invites are passed out, it might just go back to normal. What does everyone else think?

It's not for the beta test, remember, it's for the post-internal-alpha-pre-beta testing. To quote frankie's update:

In an effort to solidify the beta networking and game code before it’s released to the public in the Spring, we’ll be ramping up our ongoing internal Alpha tests to include non-Microsoft employees to help us hit a larger scale. This means that we’ll be tapping active members of our community to join us on Xbox Live as a precursor to the official start of the public beta. We’re still working on logistics and details but suffice it to say that we will have the opportunity to grant access to some number (thousands) of Bungie and Halo fans worldwide. This will not be a sweepstakes or a random drawing but will instead focus on active, supportive members of our community and people who are actively playing Halo 2 on Xbox Live and can provide us with the feedback and test cases we require.

Perhaps. I was thinking it'd more go to people like Louis Wu, C0ldvengeance, Blackstar (unless he died, which I'm suspecting), and other prominent members.

However, picking prominent or 'better' (in the sense of posting manners and such) people from the forum would be quite interesting as well, and I could think of plenty of people who could receive such a prize.. If that's what you'd like to call it.

That quote sounds like they'd give you some uber-secret way to download the Halo 3 Alpha to your Xbox360, and then send you some sort of sexy "Frankie has sent you a message." invitation. Only that first one would be a picture of him in his tellitubby pajamas. The next one would be a game invite.

Frankie said that this phase of testing would involve *thousands* of community members. I have no doubt that the "heavy-hitters" as I like to call them (Louis Wu & Other HBO managers, ect...) will be invited. But, I'm sure they're going to have to call on a bunch of members of Bungie.net, as well as other Bungie forums to fill their quota for testers.

I'm just hoping they don't choose all famous people within the community, but a healthy mixture of the well-knowns and mature, helpful forum members who aren't really that well known.

I was under the impression that when he said "Thousands" of community members, he meant the beta test, not the alpha.. I must've misread, if this is true. :\

It does say Halo community. Implying that the community as a whole, not just b.net. I'd think they would take some HBO members and the like.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

In a previous update, Frankie said that the pre-beta test will get into the thousands. I think that this will follow the fan-site, to active online players, to respected members of this site hierarchy. Maybe someone should track Sketchfactor. I think he will be a big part of this whole thing. He is the Community Guy after all.

And I don't think this will negatively affect the maturity of the site until after all the spots are filled. Those who feel left out may spam this site with complaining threads, or just start acting vindictive in general. I know there will have to be some extra vigilance, on the part of the ninjas, and the responsible members when that happens. Until then, I think we will see a coming together of the community, like we have never experienced before.

But I could be wrong. We'll have to wait and see.

Yes, that AND

It will attract more people to the forums, and the newer users will see and think it's a nice community and maybe join it and be apart of it.

Clever move by bungie, its a win/win situation.

I don't think they'll make a big deal about it if they do pick anyone who frequents this site often. As what seems to happen all too often, someone will start talking about elitism and then the bickering starts. It would have to be hush-hush. I am not saying its a bad idea though.

Hush, don't speak the E-word!
I'm mainly worried about what will happen to those members who think they're active and supportive members of the community, but don't get picked. Rampant much?

  • 01.04.2007 12:16 AM PDT

Yeah, after I posted that I was like 'Oops! My own worst enemy!'

As for the complaining, what people don't know can't hurt them. Although, I still think it would be hard to keep that under-wraps. I have more than an idea that Wu would HAVE to put it up on his site if he got to take part, but that is conjectural.

There is still the age requirement. So will it make those under the age requirement behave? No. I doubt they did this just to get people to "behave". I'm sure it's just a nice jesture Bungie is making to those fan's who actively participate on the site, of course in a mature manner.

  • 01.04.2007 6:58 AM PDT

*Sgt

I don't know if they specifically meant "site members" when they said that, or a combination of that and other community people.. like other fansite people? dunno..

Fixed. And just count yourself lucky he didn't include a 'member' joke...

If there are thousands of spots, I wonder who'll do the picking? Seems like too much work for people, unless you asked for applications or something: A checklist of criteria, perhaps. Do you own a 360? Do you play Halo 2 regularly (please link Gamertag)? etc. etc...

I hope they pick up most of the Australasian community members, at the moment it seems those guys are getting a raw deal (beta wise)!

This means Bungie wanted a way for the non-employee people like Recon, Yoozel and some others to get into the beta test without having to stand in line with the rest of the unwashed masses.

Shenanigans!
