It does say Halo community. Implying that the community as a whole, not just b.net. I'd think they would take some HBO members and the like.

This means Bungie wanted a way for the non-employee people like Recon, Yoozel and some others to get into the beta test without having to stand in line with the rest of the unwashed masses.

Shenanigans!

:O!

In any case, I do think that the community Alpha is a good idea. If they were to get nothing but crap from the Beta (because of the more open-ness of it) they'll still have some usable results from hand-picked community members. :P

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

I'm going to guess that the "community members" have nothing to do with B.net members. It's going to be members of HBO, and other video game magazine editors/writers. If I have discovered anything so far about the pre-beta/beta is that it is a huge publicity stunt, and not really about the game itself. I mean think about it, the "rule of 3" is a publicity stunt to get people to play Halo 2 again on XBL so it can be the #1 game on XBL again and replace god-awful GOW. Oh, and after you get done playing the 3 hours of Halo 2 on XBL, you have to go to the website and provide all your personal information to a site that you don't know whether or not you get registered. I mean how hard would it have been to put a generic auto-message saying "thanks for registering at Halo3. com" sent to your email address. You sign up, provide all this information, and you still don't know if you got registered. And then the worst example that it's a publicity stunt, the Crackdown thing. That game sucks sooo bad it makes Batman: Dark Tomorrow look like the future of gaming. I feel bad for Bungie for being associated with a game that is so sub-par that it is an embarassment. I mean Microsoft Game Studios realized that no one was going to buy that game, and I'm sure they spent a lot of money to develop it, and they needed something to make it sell. Thank gawd Bungie makes a decent game so they can bail out other developers.

One thing I am sooo glad about is the fact that the pre-beta/beta are only open to people 17 or older. I am soooo sick and tired of listening to people who are 12-16 who play Halo 2 like they have nothing else in their life.

I think it's nice whenever a company lets the end-user help out with beta testing and the like because it makes said user feel more involved. I also think it is a great way to get publicity for a product.

Haha! impwnity!

Anyway, as has been pointed out, civility on Bungie.Net is a goal that's a bit small in scope for something as big as a thousand-strong invite into the pre-beta gaming. Think of it as the last push of the pre-beta testing. Bungie needs bigger numbers to stress things and there's a large pool of ready-and-willing people there to... Be stressful, I guess.

Whoa, it's weird seeing you post without the red eyed scary terminator dude. Don't worry though Shishka, I still peedle in my pants everytime I see your name come up on the boards.

You got the stressful part right. The Halo community will turn those maps inside out, which is a good thing. It'll give Bungie lots of time to fix the flaws and resolve any balance issues.

From glancing over that update, again, the beta seems skewed towards American gamers, which isn't really where the overall problem lies. One of the major weak points of Halo 2 was the netcode which only confounded the problem of not being host. This was most prevalent in non-US players (as the host is mainly situated inside the US), as they lagged terribly and the "reg" on other players was random at times. Now, if it does go the way I foresee it will, the beta will cater mainly for US player (and yes, I realise that most of Halo's and Halo 2's players are US), but it's important that the beta can do its job - to test for bugs.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

Yeah. If I would have to point out one flaw with the beta's organization, it's that they're getting the vast majority of the netcode data from within the US. It's trans-continental netcode that really needs tweaking. But, I'm sure they've got something planned for people outside of the United States. :-)

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Its possible, but I doubt it, I have a feeling a large amount of slots will be filled up with members that people that work there know personally and play a lot of Halo.

I think its alittle to easy to get a beta slot for elitism to prevail. With contests, Online applying, Crackdown. If someone want's to say I'm better than you I have a beta slot, people wouldn't care because they just bought crackdown and they have a beta slot too. Too many options, not just being an active member gets you in.

I really would like to know what the "requirements" are for this alpha test, as I'm interested in participating and I think I could be considered an active member of the Halo community. If there are thousands of slots available and Bungie is going to be hand picking the people to play in the alpha, how are they going to go about it?

Don't you just love Bungie? If they are going to do what they said they will then mostly members of this this specific forum will probably get the Alpha copy of Halo 3 since most of the members here are actually mature (The Spetagon Forum)... But then again thats what I think could happen.

  • 01.04.2007 8:09 PM PDT

I think it's inaccurate to say that Bungie is looking for "mature" gamers (although I would hope that was a prerequisite somewhere along the line).

Bungie only used the words "active" and "supportive" which to me includes the entire Halo community. It would encompass this official site, HBO, and many other fan-created sites, including third-party media sites like TXB, IGN, GameSpot, etc. That being said, the question still remains how Bungie is planning on passing out this option. They've clearly said it's not a "sweepstakes" yet they've gone onto say that it will include thousands of participants because of the nature of the test.

I guess we can only hope for further news in tonight's update. I personally hope that the thousands can include sites outside of the scope of Bungie.net, HBO and simply their affiliates. I guess we'll just have to wait and see unless someone from Bungie wants to clarify in this thread...

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Well their "idea" must be working, as I seem to have taken on a more positive and active role : )

I still think further steps could be taken to encourage more mature and logical activity on the forum. Invitation only ranks, groups, or other privilages could be used by Bungie to encourage active members to strive for such things..

for example, perhaps a group called "Ninja's in Training" or something could be created, and those members who've shown maturaty and knowledge could be invited. Those apart of this exclusive group could get benefits such as titles, awards, or access to polls and other site-related material that other members do not.

Just my oppinion.

I like to Rollick

Personally, I didn't really take it to mean forum members but since the number of people there talking about is in the thousands I can see them picking forum members.

At first I thought that the people they were talking about was the community leaders at HBO, red vs blue, etc. but since they want a thousand people there's room for more.

I don't really want it to have people change their posting habits just so they can land an alpha spot, although it is an interesting side effect of the announcement, but more as a reward for people who have been excellent posters.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I, too, have become more active in the community. I'm not acting any different, perse, other than abandoning my usual "lurker" tactics and getting more involved in disucssions.

About incentives. I do believe being able to pre-beta test Halo 3 is enough of an incentive, don't you? ;)

What's wrong with a little bit more maturity on the forums? I know it's something that's out of mental reach for a lot of people here, but I think it MIGHT be possible. Keyword "might."

I always have and always will; but I'm just curious as if attempting to get others to be that way is a planned or by chance fringe benfit of doing the pre-beta testing that way.

I'd love to see additional "Incentives" for those members that contribute. Though prizes and such would ultimately be a bad idea, participation in exclusive events would, IMHO, be positive...
