I have played Halo1 for 6 years now and just noticed last knight that there is a compass on the Assault Rifle. But my question is how the hell would a compass work on a ring world? Compasses can only work on planets.

How would you know if it wouldn't work? Have you tried it?

It points to the planet that the Halo circles around

The gas giant, Threshold.

I don't blame you for your ignorance. That's what I love about Halo, you see something new everyday.

QFT.

Also, November 2001 - January 2007 is only two months more than five years, not six.

It's not so much a compass as it is a point of reference for location. Oh wait, isn't that what a compass is?

On a slightly more serious note, it doesn't work like a traditional compass. It points to Threshold, the gas giant next to Halo. I remember reading that it has something to do with the fact that Threshold is a gas giant and the Assault Rifle is gas fed, or something like that.

I sure don't.

I noticed the compass 4 years ago but never used it

It's a compass, but apparently it got frazzled in the "blind" jump into hyperspace.

Hmm, I've never really thought about that before.

Small off topic question though, what does "QFT" mean?

I think it just points there because Cortana made it do so, as It would always be in one place relative to the ring.

Or it has such a strong magnetic field it is attracting the compass anyway.

It points to the nearest planet, Threshold.

  • 01.08.2007 5:26 PM PDT

I noticed it right away and do't recall ever looking at it again. And I don't think that a compass could use Threshold as a pole unless the ring itself was closer to one of the poles. So what does it matter.

The arrow of the "compass" in the AR points to the direction of the North Star. So technically it works on a ring planet. If the arrow points up, you're going north, if it points down, you're going south, If the arrow points right, you're going west, and if it points left, you're going east. I would like to say that even a real compass woul work outer space (because of the rotation) but I'm not very sure about that...

The AR is gas fed as in it operates by recoil or blow-back. That means the hammer hits the shell and fires the bullet and the leftover gases push the bolt back and load another round and it does it over and over. I don't think that would make the compass go to the gas-giant. I would think that it would point to the center or top of the ring. Doesn't it do that on our Earht? Point to the North Pole?
